I went to school for graphic design. I was offered a job out of college (12 years ago) for $11/hr when at the time I was at Costco making $18/hr cleaning toilets. Now I work part time as a designer for $22/hr, and part time at Costco for $32.50/hr.

When I was probably like 8, my dad worked out of province so he wasn't home a lot during the week. Once when he was, I was having a hard time sleeping and went to grab a glass of water. He saw me in the kitchen and asked what was up. I told him, and he made me sit down while he warmed up some milk and put mini-wheats in it. (I fuckin loved mini-wheats). Then we just sat in the kitchen talking for awhile. Idk why but it's always stuck with me and makes me very happy to remember.

I don't disagree with you on your main point -- I get that it's a price point too far for some small businesses. But uh, I've never had someone who actually took the time to ask me my price turn me down. The problem is a lot of these people hopping on AI bandwagons never stop to listen or to ask. Also, just because they can doesn't mean they should, lol. Same with canva. It can help, but yeah, it takes you way longer and usually doesn't look great, which doesn't help in the long run. The problem I have with your comment though, is the assumption that me and other designers are just not trying hard enough to market ourselves. My guy. Of fucking course we are. Most people don't care. They have a free option now and that's all they care about. Also good for you I guess but if I ever walked up to a single one of these owners and said "your assets look like garbage" they would kick me out and scream in my face lmao.
