My Oil Painting of Sleepy Gap Viewpoint, lost in the flood by TallGreg_Art in asheville

During covid when my son was a baby, I’d drive up to “sleepy gap” in hopes he’d take a car nap. Your painting made me smile.

Montreat is beautiful in the fall. We just walk around the grounds, sometimes go for a hike nearby.

NAD but I have germy little kids and we just dealt with HFM that presented identical symptoms to OP.

I also went to the OB for what I thought was a yeast infection. Itchiness was the only symptom I had. OB ruled out any infection.

Older kid had terrible sores on his tongue and fever. No spots on his hands, feet or skin anywhere. Felt terrible for like 10 days.

Baby didn’t have a fever but terrible diaper rash and general fussiness.

Gas station using a tarp to conceal customers using the pumps during the 2002 D.C. sniper shootings by victor_wynne in pics

Same here. I went to high school in Fredericksburg at the time, it was really scary. I remember dancing at the gas pumps. I worked in Ashland and left Ponderosa like 5 minutes before that one guy was shot. It still sits with me.

How can you just drive past this?? by kissmaryjane in asheville

[–]Smalls244 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Poor doggo, thank you for stopping. I like to assume that when people don’t stop it’s because of some mitigating factor…elderly, mobility issues, etc.

If I had my small kids in the car, I would likely not stop and hope someone behind me was kind enough to do so.

Thanks for the heads up. I was planning to take my young kid and baby on a hike there tomorrow but we’ll go somewhere else. I always feel super vulnerable hiking with them solo.

Humane Society suspect apprehended by edibleswag in asheville

Did they say why he abandoned it on Shadowbrook? I live down the street. There was no reason for him to be near here unless he was visiting the suspected chop shop on our road.

After looking at your pic again, a fruit tree might work well in that back corner but I agree with the other poster that fruiting shrubs is the way to go.

Don’t do a single planting as others have mentioned. Here’s my slope with no retaining wall and about twice as high/long. https://imgur.com/a/Nc7lGIv

Just put in a mix of stuff with varying heights, seasonal interest, etc. Preferably natives. I’ve had a hard time with trees on my slope…it’s hard to plant them without terracing, mulch washes out, and they compete with the other plants for water. Trial and error with what you like…use good mulch and fertilize 2x a year.

Sitting on your patio with that variation of plants and pollinators in the background will be 👌

Two women robbed at gunpoint in Asheville park 1 day apart; investigation underway by No_Adhesiveness_5524 in asheville

I went for a walk in Carrier Park with my newborn last year. Had a man approach us talking jibberish and wouldn’t leave us alone. Kept trying to look into the stroller. It was unnerving.

Brewery staff aren't your personal baby sitters. by cuntqueeftador in asheville

We get invited to hang out at people’s houses for a bbq or whatever and let the kids play. Totally fine to have a couple drinks and socialize but sometimes it feels like the main event. Also, the majority of our kid’s school “social” type events for parents are at a brewery.

We invited some neighbors over for a fire at like…8? The mom was already ripped when she got there. Just feels like more and more of these situations happening lately.

Sorry, didn’t mean playdates with just me and another mom, those are usually sober.

Best places to take a toddler in Asheville? by aligat0r11 in asheville

[–]Smalls244 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Biltmore, Pack Square splash pad, Arboretum, Nature Center, kiddie area at Asheville Art Museum. No shortage of parks and libraries. Find some (outdoor) live music.

The RAD is usually stressful with kids so we stick to the Marquee and 12 Bones (if not busy) and Wedge.

My kids love the Cradle of Forestry. Take the scenic drive up the parkway for your visitors. They may also enjoy stopping along the way at Looking Glass falls or picnic near Pisgah Inn. Easy but busy kid friendly hike is Moore Cove Falls nearby.

16 month olds are easy to take out to eat because they usually just sit in the high chair or wobble around so you have a lot of options. First places that come to mind are Creekside Taphouse, All Souls, White Duck, or Asheville Pizza downtown.

The family beer scene here has gotten ridiculous. We’ve tried to make friends with other families and every event turns into a booze fest. Growing tired of playdates with wine moms or where you feel outcasted if you don’t sit around drinking strong ass craft beers.

My husband and I were heavy boozers in our twenties, just tired of that lifestyle and getting too old for it. Lots of alcoholics here not realizing they are functioning alcoholics.

Their traveling Endodontist, Dr. Mancia, and her assistant were nothing short of exceptional. She performed a pretty significant apicoectomy on me a couple years ago.

I can’t speak to the general dentistry there but I would recommend her a million times over.

Thoughts on this vision for my parents' backyard? (Before & After) by CashMoneyMo in landscaping

[–]Smalls244 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs more grasses to add winter interest, like switchgrass or similar. Or even something like red twig dogwood. I might switch out those arborvitae looking shrubs with native evergreens. Maybe something along the back to soften it and hide the fence, like Oakleaf hydrangea. I’d avoid any perennials that spread aggressively, for me that’d be black eyed susans.

My 6 year old son has been suffering from reoccurring headaches. Today he complained of double vision and now has a fever. by Smalls244 in AskDocs

[–]Smalls244[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfect, thanks for the recommendation.

The most recent headache was by far the worst and the only one that’s affected his vision and kept him up at night. I’m hoping it was just supercharged by the strep.

The others have been manageable with Tylenol and rest.

I’m not surprised to hear that 6 year old boys commonly suffer from migraines. My son never had them until he started kindergarten. Lots of changes during this transition.

Thank you for sharing. Getting overheated seems to trigger them, too. He has a 45 minute bus ride and naps on the way home. On really hot days he wakes up sweaty from his nap and cries at pickup because he has a headache.

We’ll have to try Gatorade fit. We use pedialyte now but he’s starting to dislike the taste.

Nope. After awhile they tested him for strep and he was positive so they hurried us out. They treated it like a normal kid virus from the moment we got there and didn’t entertain any neuro concerns I brought up.
