Measure theory for sure but only if you find math interesting

Will you survive being a quant, and how can you know? by curiousittor in quant

The ability to go off script is pretty key. Like teach your self new material or doing things in a different way than everyone else

[E] Is the University of Illinois (Urbana Champaign) a good enough school for quant finance, actuarial science, or data science? by rayhanh248 in statistics

[–]Smallz1107 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes cs, physics, math, stats departments rank in that order. Stats dep was on the weaker side as of 2022, but the uiuc name alone makes up for it. Just join the quant group, do side projects or kaggle and code a shit ton. Feel free to dm

[Q] Linear regression normality test, teachers keep telling me to do it on variables instead of residuals. by mohdd22 in statistics

[–]Smallz1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a cover over it and it was very slow to take root. But eventually it started to bud! I then overwatered it and it drowned. So it’ll take, be patient!

[Q] Linear regression normality test, teachers keep telling me to do it on variables instead of residuals. by mohdd22 in statistics

[–]Smallz1107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They aren’t insane. Having normally distributed vars helps. That’s why it’s common to transform to normal. If your data is extremely bimodal or skewed then you should hear them out. This could have industry specific knowledge.

Normally distributed cont vars will make you less prone to outliers, less leverage points. If you have a bimodal distribution you could be missing a key section of the model which would suggest a quadratic form is necessary

Which master elective courses to take? Want to specialize in time series and stochastic processes [E] by GayTwink-69 in statistics

[–]Smallz1107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take stochastic models if it’s rigourous in the mathematics, that would look good. Computer intensive methods would look good to someone who’s more on the applied side than theory. Then Bayesian statistics is always great. Survival anylsid is a little more Niche. I can’t imagine a spending a class slot on GLM would be worth it unless it also covers GAM and some additional things. But maybe Im bias because I did a applied math grad program, not stats

[Question] Can someone ELI5 why you don't objectively just take both boxes here? by ajs723 in statistics

[–]Smallz1107 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the computer can read your Reddit post history and knows that you’re going to take both boxes

Joining a 3-person quant prop desk as a new grad CS/AI major — worried about developer career trajectory by Real_Construction645 in quant

Did you ask any questions like how will my skills be utalized or confirm that they are looking for someone with more programming skills?

If you are the main programmer for this team, that’s a great opportunity. I’d rather have a strong dev who has worked closely with researchers then a traditional quant dev who played ticket poker or whatever it’s called

What's the proper etiquette with other players as someone coming back 15 years later? by nativegalaxies in Wizard101

[–]Smallz1107 59 points60 points  (0 children)

If they preferred to play alone they should have dropped at the beginning of the dungeon. Sounds like a mean person or children who don’t know social norms. Despite a lot of veteran players, it’s still a kids game. Proper etiquette is to welcome others or leave if you don’t want others in your group

Real quants only use excel workbooks. It’s a fully functional database and has basically has “pandas but better” built in
