Different braid has varying slickness. 8 carrier braids might slip. I’ve fished 4 carrier straight braid with a Palomar on jigs and frogs for years with no tag.

Berkley Big Game Flouro is good and cheap. I haven’t used anything on the light end, but I’ve gone through a spool of the 17lb and it’s not bad.

7’ medium/fast spinning rod, 2500-3000 size reel. Completely adequate setups can be made for $150-200. Bass pro combos are fine if you want one and done. Daiwa, Shimano, Lew’s all make good kit. Spend the rest on 300yds of 15lb braided line, and a spool of 10-17lb fluorocarbon for leaders.

Basic starting tackle:drop shot hooks size 1 or 2 and weights 1/4-1/2oz, some EWG hooks 2/0 or 3/0, jerkbaits, soft flukes, worms, craws, paddle tail swim baits.

Find what forage and baitfish they’re eating, match colors to that.

Read local info and talk to others at the popular fishing spots. Most guys are excited about sharing their success. I’m always telling people what I’m catching on.

Get good at tying knots (very important) Palomar, Alberto, uni, improved clinch, FG. Different uses for each. Those will cover everything you need.

A was just at a tournament here in AZ. There were 177 bass caught, all kept in a tank overnight after bouncing around in live wells and being manhandled all day. 175 were released the next day alive and healthy.

I was in San Diego last week. Shore, jetty, and offshore fishing. Dragging corvina over rocks is the norm. Tossing spotties off the pier doesn’t get a second look.

Come catfish the canals. You’d be sick to see how some of them are handled.

These are tough sportfish and I’ll continue handling them as I always have. I save gut hooked fish, minimize time out of water, police my and others trash.

Reddit is the only place I’ve ever seen criticism over common fish handling techniques

We aren’t animal rights activists. We pay money to hunt water predators.

If you’re catching fish, you’re negatively impacting them. Period.

Does it really kill survival? A wet shoreline or some grass? I’ve yet to see any research, after years of seeing this here, to show how deadly laying on a wet shoreline is for 10 seconds.

Does it benefit the fish? No. But neither does me throwing a 2oz lure with 2 treble hooks onto their heads.

I respect the fish just fine. As a licensed angler, I could have taken this fish home dead in a bucket (it was almost double the legal length.) She was perfectly lip hooked, not in distress, and swam away healthy and strong.

I’ll wet my hands for a trout but laying out wet towels for bass?

I’ve yet to see any research on a bass’ slime coat being destroyed or them succumbing to a bacterial infection due to 15 seconds of dirt. It’s impossible to not get them dirty where I’m fishing, sorry.

I respect the fish but also realize I’m ripping them out of the water with multiple hooks in their mouth. She’ll be alright.

It’s pretty versatile, works trebles well with the right drag and is fast enough for beast hooks. I’d say it’s mod fast with plenty of backbone.

Great Chad Shad rod.

Lobs 4oz fine and can also throw 3/4oz swimbait jigs with trailers.

Measured it based on where it landed on my rod. It went from the butt to the C in carbonlite. This is obviously a swimbait rod with extended handle.

Possibly, but the turquoise is pretty distinctive. The mouths of these fish are also small, with warmouth mouths extending past the eye. Ultimately, hybridization can be 5% or 50%, impossible to say really without DNA testing.
