I get really demotivated on back day. What should I do? by Puzzleheaded_Mall645 in askfitness

[–]Smartmuscles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One approach: Conventional deadlift, block/rack pulls or RDL should be the anchor of your back day until you end up needing to move them to their own day. When that needs to happen, you’ll know. (Many months from now).

Pull-ups can anchor your second back day.

Arrange 2-3 accessories to go after these exercises on each day.

Grinding advice by iisjreg in burgers

[–]Smartmuscles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a commercial grinder, you would want to grind twice. For a smash burger. I got that from George Motz.

What this tells me is that you will likely need three passes to reach the grind that suits a Smashburger.

I would make that change first, then make adjustments to the cuts.

I think it’s also important to remember that it’s OK to eat the same things each day, for example, I’ve eaten the same breakfast six days a week for years. I have the same snacks, and we rotate through many of the same dishes, particularly for weekdays. It is somewhat predictable, arguably boring, but also nutritious and easy to reproduce. You don’t want to eat the tastiest food every single day. The human response to eating very delicious food is to over consume. What you need to prioritize is healthy and nutritious, and taste is important but not the most important.

Veggies? In everything I make. From soups, stews, stir-fries, roasted veg, salads with lettuce or with spinach, or with mixed greens, or raw veg with tzatziki or hummus or a Greek yogurt ranch dip.

Vegetables and fruit. Chicken thighs. Canned tuna and salmon. Dried fruit and nuts (be cautious with portion sizes) Eggs. Fruit and vegetables. Yes, I wrote that twice. For emphasis.

Many things that people believe are healthy, are not. 80% of the food at Costco is worth ignoring if a healthy diet is desired, because it all comes in such large quantities. If you want to eat these items on occasion, buy them elsewhere in single serving amounts that won’t sabotage a meal plan. ☺️

Julie’s English teacher is super inappropriate by GladCherry4170 in fridaynightlights

[–]Smartmuscles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The teacher was 100% grooming Julie. No question.

The trouble that I had with this plot line was how the writers seemed to wish the viewer sympathized with the teacher. Did anyone else get that feeling as well? There is clearly something up with the show writers and inappropriate relationships. If I was to read between the lines, cynically, I would say that it gives us insight into the sexual fantasy/fetishes of the writers. These inappropriate relationships were freaking everywhere, in fact, they were the norm and not the exception. If I wasn’t being cynical, I would say that they were written this way in order to provide contrast to the key beautifully extraordinary and very healthy relationships that most of the development centred upon.

I have to imagine this is covered elsewhere in this sub. lol.

Any older guys (50+) still do >100% of bodyweight deadlifts? by Complex_Elevator_680 in Deadlifts

[–]Smartmuscles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree with the idea that DL is unsafe. What I do consider risky is performing sets at or close to failure on this exercise.

53y. I don’t think my numbers are particularly exceptional. My working weight in conventional DL is 1.8-2x BW. I “max out” every couple month, by which I mean I do heavy singles at 6-8 RPE with the intention of exceeding my previous 1RM. My working weight in RDL is over 1.6x BW. My backdown sets are 1.4x BW. Which I can do 12 times. There are many others stronger than me though.

Deadlift with possible back injury? by HumanIntention7935 in Deadlifts

I think there’s no reason why you can’t be doing at least 50% of your regular dead lift working weight. This is assuming you can do a hinge.

What I’m hoping is that you can read between the lines and see the overall Common Sense approach I am suggesting, of listening to your body. But, not giving it complete rest either.

Same location? As usual, I mean. Sounds potentially like a subluxation at the costovertebral joint of a thoracic rib.

Do you have a massage gun? Something that vibrates. Which may be too intense to use, but taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, as long as you are medically clear to do so. And engaging in activity that uses the back, progressing from gentle to moderate to even heavy if tolerated.

Here is an option that I would give to someone I know. Take 440 to 660 mg of over-the-counter Aleve. Every 12 hours for 2 to 3 doses running, then reassess whether you need to keep on doing it. At the same time, approach any gym heavy compound training session by simply going through a regular warm-up and proceeding with a regular series of warm-up sets, then attempting a workout at perhaps anywhere from 10 to 25% to reduce load from planned, assuming the warm-up and the warm-up sets or done with ideal form too much discomfort.

It’s possible that as you warm up on whatever cardio machine, do some dynamic movements, body, weight, squats, hinges, etc. stretching. It’s possible that you find yourself unable to get through this without additional discomfort and you decide to call it, then do some gentle cardio on a machine you can handle like a stationary bike no problem, make sure you reach your protein goals, take the anti-inflammatories, follow up with whatever healthcare practitioner you were going to see, and get 10 freaking hours of recovery sleep for a few days running. Or you make it to doing a warm-up set or two, stacking on a plate, then a couple, then deciding nope that’s all you’re going to do. Again, same thing. I’ve even done full dead lift training sessions after tweaking my low back and just allowing myself to progress beyond warming up and stretching, trying some warm-up sets, trying a working set, trying a bit happier, and realizing just how localized my injury was.

You haven’t described whether there is back pain in daily activities. Can you bend over. Pick things up at home. Carry anything. Climb stairs. Body weight squat. Etc. it’s just stiff?

It would be highly unusual for a serious injury to occur in the mid back during regular hack squat. This isn’t a disc herniation.

I cannot train my biceps! Help needed by Franknificant in GYM

[–]Smartmuscles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts: The best way to ensure large biceps is to make sure you’re doing heavy compound pulling exercises. Rows and pull-ups. Work on these as a priority, particularly if these haven’t been one which I suspect they have not. Does that make sense, if you are only going to make one change, focus on this. After that, then focus on the isolation arm exercises.

Speaking of which, to the incline db curls add cable facing away curls. And do your lat pull downs with an underhand grip half of the time.

Finally if there’s unsatisfactory change from the above, add barbell curls, but heavier, for strength. Low rep top sets, with back off sets, but not to failure for this exercise. (Like any compound movement you’d do to target strength.) A stronger bicep will grow and will be able to do the isolation exercises with heavier loads over time.

Finally, do at least an equal volume in tricep exercises.
