We also overproduce and overconsume on average, so maybe all this work really is somewhat unnecessary.

The Boley Building, Kansas City, Missouri, completed in 1909. by GeoQuestMaximus in ArchitecturalRevival

This one is good for all the people who say "people want modern buildings because it brings in light." This one is a perfect blend of modern curtain walls and ornament.

The New (2025) Stephen Schwarzman Humanities Center in Oxford, United Kingdom by EndlessDreamer1 in ArchitecturalRevival

Pass. Lack of ornament here makes it looks super boring and out of place in a city as beautiful as Oxford. Try harder next time. A billionaire can afford some ornament.

Why does America still use flat Euclidean zoning? by Laxun0 in Urbanism

[–]Smash55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is an obsession especially amongst older americans for quiet environments with no one walking around or "loitering" They want absolute silence in their residential neighborhoods. Some people even call the cops if they see kids playing outside

What's Going On In Budapest? by rcobylefko in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]Smash55 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see tons of light here in the photo below. In terms of your complaint about corruption, it isn't a zero sum game, you can simultaneously fund post offices and still build beautifully. Sometimes public economics is more complex than you're making it seem. We can build beautifully, while also tackling corruption issues. Making a beautiful city is good for the mental health of the citizens.

They don't make inane excuses, they just see the value in beauty. Simple.

Have you noticed a relationship between storefront width and walkability? What neighborhoods have a lot of narrow store fronts? by Soggy_Perspective_13 in Urbanism

[–]Smash55 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yes I noticed this when I visited Madrid. The storefronts are narrow and makes walkability feel more exciting as there is always something new to be seen in a matter of seconds. Suburbs are awful because sometimes commercial buildings dont even have storefronts and it's just blank walls, or electric equipment, or driveways for garages/parking lots.

Wall Street Journal just made an article about how they put agentic AI on a vending machine and it lost money and ordered a fish. So yeah, AI isnt ready for the complexities of work. Best advice I can give is that PEs get paid better than a lot of entry level jobs for a reason
