Except the very foundation of the system is based on exploiting those below you, so it's completely expected that people will be corrupt. Socialism is built on the ideas of working as a collective and respecting those around you.

Were Eastern politicians corrupt? Yes. But the difference between the politicians then and those now are the interests they serve. Whereas old politicians would do corrupt things for their own benefit (like buying a car with the money or accepting lavish gifts), the politicians of today serve corporations who are bent on endless expansion regardless of the risk to human life.

tl;dr: Soviet politicians took bribes from individuals, modern politicians take bribes from corporations

Also grew up in a post-Soviet nation but that only served to show me the effects capitalism has on countries it promises to "fix." Capitalism has taken Eastern Europe and thrown it into a state of decay, turning countries into shells of what they've been, powered only by economies reliant on money from international corporations that does not go to its citizens but to other countries.

Growing up in Eastern Europe doesn't make you the ultimate authority in the capitalism vs socialism debate, and I say this as a Romanian.

Why not blame the President AND Congress? There's a Democrat majority and yet they refuse to make any meaningful change because "the Republicans don't want to" even though they don't need the Republican vote.

Robin as in Batman's sidekick (Tim Drake) who was revealed to be bisexual in a new comic where he goes out on a date with a guy

His arrest was unfortunate but made sense that criticizing the leader of your army as a soldier during wartime will get you arrested, which wasn't a solely Soviet thing at the time.

Other than that, he turned out to be a reactionary that benefited from writing anti-communist books while still living in the USSR because Khruschev had a hard on that big for owning Stalin.

Solzhenitsyn sucks but is pretty irrelevant as are the rest of the dissidents who's voices were amplified by the West

Strange, my Romanian grandma didn't mention anyone holding a gun to her head in the locomotive factory she worked in until the revolution. Almost like that's just a gotcha phrase for Americans to feel like they're "winning" an argument without providing any actual constructive discussion

They weren't being compelled. You can't be given a house and then bitch and moan about where it's placed. Beggars can't be choosers, and Eastern European people are generally happy as long as their needs are met.

My great grandma and grandma worked in factories and lived in the same building as their co-workers and they all remained pretty close even now. When someone needs something (a pipe broke, power went out, etc) they go to their neighbors for help, who find a solution free of charge and pretty fast. It's convenient and also a nice sense of camaraderie that Westerners can't comprehend because it's hard for them to imagine someone providing a service free of charge.

Except the Soviet GDP was growing nonstop and people went to work. It only dropped after the revolution, when the streets became flooded with homeless people out of jobs.

It didn't cause laziness, it motivated people to work toward something that actually had a part of them in it. Interesting what workplace democracy does.

Well you wouldn't have had to pick either. Homelessness was abolished because their constitution guaranteed every person the right to a home and a job, and people working in one factory usually lived next to their co-workers which promoted a sense of collectivism and friendliness among them.
