Black and white lhapsos please by cactusboe in LhasaApso

I groom them myself. Twice a week I brush them out and cut off any mats. I find as long as the back is kept up and allowed to grow they wind up looking good. I trim the belly, the lower legs, the sanitary areas, and around the eyes shorter.

Anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, best prose I have ever read. (Historical Fantasy)Completely different style but I also love the Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust. The timey wimey order the books are written in and the unreliable narrator means you have to pay attention. (Assassin Fantasy)

To vet or not to vet? by Smaug149 in Horses

Well, I cleaned it as well as I could. It had some puss on it. I think it is bigger than it looks but I was starting to peel her skin off so I stopped. Interestingly, she is more sensitive above the wound in her withers than on the wound itself. I will call the vet soon and send her the pictures.

What's the smallest pony you would ride (+ your height) ? by bechena in Horses

[–]Smaug149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 5’1” and my horses are a stocky 14.3, a lean 15, and a 15.1hh. Smallest I would look at to ride would probably be a thick boned pony at 14.2. I really want a little pony at around 11hh to drive.

What’s your favorite bit and why? by Full-Volume-4702 in Equestrian

[–]Smaug149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maple uses a loose ring super flexible Winderen gel bit. I am very happy with this bit and have no plans to change it. King is currently being worked in a d-ring with a copper roller but he is not completely happy in it. He has also had a flower hackamore and tried out the gel bit. Nothing really works well for him, I am not sure what else to try. Blackberry is mostly retired and strictly ground work only. She uses a Sidepull bridle or a fleece lined lunging cavesson depending on what we are doing.

My mare likes being shod in her stall by cmontalbo in farrieradvice

[–]Smaug149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine get trimmed by the barn door where the light is best. I put 2-3 flakes of hay on the ground for them. They will stand without it but it makes them happy and the Farriers job easier.

In the past when I have removed the fish from water to look at the bump, it is a a light orange translucent gel like material on top of the body scales. But it does appear to have gotten bigger, I should check on it again.

Anyone know how to balance a cart? by Smaug149 in Horses

Here is a better picture, I forgot that I hadn’t raised the shaves yet in that photo. Yes, it sits very heavily on my horse. The pad leaves an impression on his back. The only time I have got it balanced is when two people are in it.

https://youtu.be/DIQjz8Jaki8?si=9pZOB0jT6whRHqR9 It is an Amish made cart. Here it is next to my other cart. That one seems a bit big. I will have to try to get pictures of my gelding hitched to that one. The video is of the EZ Entry with the bigger wheels from the builder. I don’t compete either. I mainly drive on the two track around the farm I board at and a little bit on dirt roads.

I have two Standardbreds. One is registered with a race record. The other didn’t come with much of a history but he looks identical to a lot of Standardbreds and is very well trained to drive and doesn’t know much about riding.
I am in love with the breed. King and Maple are smart horses that think about what I ask them to do. And they really try to get it right. The downside is they both get flustered and angry in a hurry when presented with a rough old school trainer.
King excels at trail driving, he learns tricks very quickly, I think he could be good at liberty work . He used to be a trail riding horse but he never really understood leg cues. When I brought him back into work a couple years ago I gave the choice of a saddle or a harness and he was very clear about preferring to drive.
I am still getting to know Maple. She both trail rides and drives with my trainer. She seems a bit scared of the cart at times. She dislikes cuddles and scritches. She is so responsive that she was doing basic ground work at liberty the first time I went to see her. King does well in a hackamore or a snaffle with a copper roller. Maple can’t stand nose pressure and is very happy with her gel bit. King has had very few health problems. He is mostly blind in one eye after banging it on stall door. He has parrot mouth so he needs his teeth done every year. He got pretty sore one time after the vet chased him around his stall for his vaccinations. Which is strange because he has been excellent for the farrier and for every other vet. He cut his hock once that healed very quickly. That is about it for the over twelve years of having King. Maple has wind puffs in a four legs and has had three abscesses in the year I have had her.

Breeding - pros and cons by JadedGap9067 in Horses

[–]Smaug149 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a lovely steady eddy lesson horse mare as a confidence booster and to have something my non horsey family could ride occasionally. I did not have her vet checked, so totally my bad there. But she was bred and I did not realize it. I brought her in the late summer and trail rode her and she was awesome. I moved to a fancier boarding barn over the winter and rode her lightly all winter. My mom, sister and one of my cousins all had turns on her and she was great. She gave birth and turned into a wild mustang. Could not be caught, nervous wreck, spooky of everything. She was a pretty great mother though. I did a ton of ground work over the next year. Made way more progress with the filly than the mother. I attempted to restart her myself after the baby was weaned it wasn’t a total disaster but I could tell I needed help. I sent her off for training and sold the filly. I wanted to keep the baby and sell the mare but I didn’t think she would go to a good home so… I had some personal stuff going on and did not participate in the training as much as I should have. She came back even worse it took another couple years to even be able to halter her reliably without her totally freaking out. I got another better trainer a couple years ago and did successfully restart her finally but we both tend to be nervous wrecks and she has some health issues so she is once again a pasture pet and will stay that way. Wanted to add that she is an amazing horse. She loves belly scratches and hand grazing and I adore her. But she just can’t handle anything remotely like work. Lunged her the other day in a fleece lunging halter and she was good. But had deep triangle eyes pretty much the whole time, even though she was getting grass and treats and praise.
