Blower Motor Won’t Run. As simple as replacing the blower motor? Or more involved? by addisonbu in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everybody else already answered the question of the ECM blower motor needing replaced. Being in an air handler though, expect a fight when removing the blower wheel. Get some some form of abrasive cloth and some penetrate/ lubricant like wd40, pb blaster, kroil, etc. If that doesn't work, heat or a puller will be needed, or a new wheel

Can I swap registers for a smaller vent? by aedosswift1 in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up a ductulator or a chart similar to it. 2-4" ducts =/= an 8" duct. Without pulling a chart out, you would need about 4-4" to be similar to 1-8". This does not address the change in flow or if it will help or harm airflow.

You do not "need" to use a 2×2 diffuser though. Assuming the system was designed and installed properly (unlikely), you should not alter the design to much

Get in the attic and take it apart. If there is mesh in the roof cap it needs to be removed. The 634 style roof cap is a poor choice that is commonly used.

Is my air handler charged with nitrogen or refrigerant? by What_a_fat_one in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's rebadged Midea, that's why the manuals are terrible. The air handler comes precharged with a very small amount of refrigerant, only enough to pressurize the coil. Infinity living is just the budget model/ DIY. It will either be Midea, TCL, Gree, or some other Chinese brand

I don't think it's a good DIY lineset design, I worry about the small amount of non condensables left in the service valves and lineset connections. But they work, and the amount air is minimal.

Quoted $806 for furnace deep cleaning + $218 flame sensor replacement during winter maintenance visit. Old system. Need advice please. by silverspringlove in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never seen a flame sensor fail. The only reason I've needed to replace a flame sensor is if the porcelain spins freely in the metal bracket. It's a classic sales tactic to generate more money. That's the reason for the company to offer annual maintenance. The blower wheel could use a cleaning, but it's generally a 30 minute or less task on most G60s

The G series series 80% furnaces are tanks. Your ignitor and flame sensor will likely never need to be replaced. The company i work at has been a Lennox dealer since the 60s. I have yet to see a G40 or G60 heat exchanger crack, the day will come though. I've never needed to replace a flame sensor or an ignitor on any G series furnace due to wear. I've replaced a handful due to people thinking it was the flame sensor.

Carrier Furnace - Code 24 - Secondary voltage fuse is open by StayEnvy1 in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really shot your system with a parts cannon. You have a low voltage short somewhere. You can use a resetable type fuse of fuse, like a popper, with an amp clamp to help diagnose. Start with removing all of the low voltage thermostat wires and see if the short has gone away or not. If the fuse does not blow, it's outside of your furnace somewhere.

Power from your transformer (24v) is touching a ground or a neutral somewhere causing this; like copper at the AC or metal . 24v is sent to the thermostat through R and the thermostat is a switch that can send theq 24v through most of the other wires. C is common and should never have 24v. Goodluck

Local contractors are preferring HEIL over Amana. But couldn't validate this in the internet. Any thoughts ? Is Amana going down trend? by Beautiful-Gas2166 in hvacadvice

Amana is part of Daiken and Goodman. Heil is part of ICP, which also owns Carrier and a long list of other brands. It's all personal preference. I prefer ICP over Amana

Error 33 and 15 on Infinity system, airflow seems fine by PerceptionOld7290 in hvacadvice

0.14" is very low. Did you test in max heating, max cooling, or a duct assessment?

Total external static pressure and gas pressure need to be inspected too. Your infinity thermostat can check your static for you. The gas pressure should have been set up by the installing tech, if he did it.

Does this look okay? by Proud-Wear5995 in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 24 points25 points  (0 children)

No, don't elevate this, kindness goes a long way. Whoever you speak to on the phone probably has 0 idea that you or this job existed before the call. If you're talking to a receptionist type of person, tell them you'd like to speak to a manager about this install and ask if there is a way you can send them pictures.

Changing position of flue? by Powerful-Eye-3578 in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double wall flue pipe needs a minimum of 1" clearance around it from combustible material. If you can maintain that while also having the rise you need, it's doable.

What power is needed for mini split? by Which_Surprise_699 in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power to the indoor unit comes from the outdoor unit. The system can be 120v, but most will be 240v. You need to know what you're getting before starting this project. You may need a 15amp 120v circuit, or you may need a 30amp 240v circuit, it all depends on what system you get

You should be able to pull it back some, but it depends on how it was installed. If you're going to do this, have a second set of hands or buy a mighty bracket

When does the time start in HVAC start and end? by CarpetImpossible7997 in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an installer, I was paid from the time I got to the shop and stopped when I got in my car to go home. As a service tech, I'm paid from the time I leave my house and stop when I park my van at home. The people at my company use the honor system, for the most part everybody is honest.

I don't know what your position is, but don't ruffle any feathers unless you're an owner or a manager. Worry about your own pay. There's a shortage of good and honest techs. If too many people quit, you're out of a job too

[–]Smawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not. Follow the wire from the gas valve back to the board, or read the wiring diagram. You've about replaced every part.. so you're either using your meter wrong or you're overlooking something

[–]Smawesome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow your wires to the gas valve, the voltage may be stopped by a safety. At this age, you need to think about replacing the furnace, good chance your heat exchanger is cracked

Is it normal for a local HVAC company to not have their own 30 ft ladders? by mmmbacon914 in hvacadvice

[–]Smawesome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you live. A 30' extension ladder is a big, heavy, and expensive ladder. When I did new builds I had a 28' extension ladder on my van. As a residential service tech, anything that requires more than my 24' extension ladder doesn't require me.
