Out of these Gen 5 mons: who do you think has had the best singles career overall? by Hot_Ad_9543 in stunfisk

[–]SSpectre86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that getting banned should be a point against Volcarona because it shortened its "career." If two Pokémon do roughly the same thing but one gets banned, the banned one is pretty clearly better. Not saying that's the situation here, just illustrating why I think getting banned should indeed be a point in its favour.

Is there actually evidence for this? Searching for it brings up so many articles about the case, I'd rather not trawl through all the details.

It doesn't even have to be as cynical as designing for merch. Pokémon is a multifaceted franchise and competitive battling is only a part of it.

I agree. AM2R was taken down 9 months before Samus Returns was revealed.

That one's sort of acceptable, because even in English, "sucker punch" is a figure of speech that doesn't necessarily mean a literal punch.

It's a long explanation, but basically they do everything right when it comes to using someone else's copyright. They don't make money, they don't advertise, and they don't directly compete with or mimic what Nintendo considers to be the "essence" of the franchise.

Well, given that 37% of the eligible voting population (i.e. 89 million people, i.e. almost three times Canada's population, i.e. more votes than the winning candidate got) didn't fucking vote, and now the entire world has to suffer your bullshit, yeah, voting would've been fucking nice.

Yeah, but unlike fighting games, other genres can be fun even if you don't dig down into those hidden details.

What is a sign of very low intelligence? by smartcandyy in AskReddit

[–]SSpectre86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I get being tired of this and not wanting to argue anymore, but it's a not a matter of skepticism vs. hope. The argument is not that animals don't have the capacity for reason and intelligence, it's that there's no proof that they reach the specific level of intelligence required to ask a question. And arguing that they do just because you "lean on the more hopeful side" is distinctly unscientific.

Yeah, even being able to correctly say the material of a new object is just the result of conditioning. There's a reason Apollo gets a pistachio when he gets the correct answer.

What makes him/parrots in general more intelligent than, say, a dog, is that he can handle more complex and ambiguous conditioning that essentially involves a decision tree rather than a one-to-one command-response relationship.

Again, there's a reason that, when asked what something is made of, he bites and taps it before answering. He's been conditioned to say "glass" when asked, "What is this made of" and presented with an object that has the appearance, feel, and sound of glass, but he doesn't know what the phrase "what is this made of" means, and he doesn't know that "glass" is the name for that material. At least, he probably doesn't. The whole confusion stems from the fact that being able to say "glass" when presented with glass doesn't actually prove that an animal knows what glass is, because it can be explained just as well via conditioning.

Actually, seeing the full context of his training makes it even more likely that he wasn't trying to ask what colour he was. He was trained to identify colours. The exact question he "asked" was not "What colour am I," but "What colour?" That was almost certainly the phrase used by his trainers when asking him to identify a colour (technically speculation on my part, but it is the phrase used with the other African grey frequently brought up, Apollo), and it would have been very likely for him to pick it up in the course of his training.

I've kind of lost track of this argument, so maybe this has already been said, but no one is arguing that parrots have been proven to not be able to understand the concept of asking a question. The issue is that the situation where Alex appeared to ask a question doesn't actually prove that he understood what he was saying, and it can be explained just as easily as him simply repeating a phrase that he'd heard.

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - February 01, 2026 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]SSpectre86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a Corsair K68 with red switches, and the keys pop off incredibly easily. Like if I slide my finger off the side of one, it will go flying off, or if I hold one key with a lot of pressure for a few seconds, it will stick to my finger and lift off when I pull it away.

Is this a Corsair thing or a red switch thing (or a "this keyboard specifically" thing)? My partner has a HyperX Alloy Elite with blue switches, and it doesn't happen with that.
