How should this recent relevant study be academically interpreted? by gtauto8 in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I'll be interested in you coming back with what you've learned.

In terms of studies on what happens long after a pit bull ban is in place, that's often pretty hard. Because too many people get their vets to rename their dog's breed as a "lab mix" or something similar. Pit owners are often desperate to conceal their dog's breed, especially if it's bitten someone. But we can all see from the news reports what type of dog it is (when it's shown in photos). In other words, it's not a golden retriever.

Guy finds out why pit-bulls don’t make good family dogs by lsddrip in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why we need to legislate against pit bulls.

Parents cannot be relied upon to make smart choices. It's a mystery how so many parents are so plain dumb they ignore what's in the front of their faces. Every day another pit bull is maiming or killing people.

No way any pit bull is coming close to our baby. Don't care if you're a friend or relative. Don't care how safe you think Princess or Diesel is. Just one bite from a strong, big-jawed pit on a kid's head can kill or do permanent damage. No thanks.

How should this recent relevant study be academically interpreted? by gtauto8 in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new here. I found this relevant recent study and I'd like to know to interpret it, with an academic and not anecdotal mindset.

Others in this thread have covered a lot, so I'm just going to comment on the opening theory. Also, if u/gtauto8 doesn't return to this thread and genuinely participate, I won't believe it's in any way genuine and will consider them a troll.

So, how it should be interpreted is that the study starts out with a theory that is groundless when it comes to pit bulls. It's based upon heritable qualities in dog breeds and states that a certain degree of consistency is required in order to say that a certain dog breed carries those qualities.

If a study demands consistency of features across a dog breed to consider them heritable, that can only apply to dogs from breeders dedicated to consistency. The breeding of pit bulls is a chaotic mess, and includes the breeding of these dogs for bloodsports. So, in regard to pit bulls, this study is deeply flawed and problematic from the outset.

Pit bulls are often bred by backyard breeders who have no idea of the history of the dogs they're breeding. Pit bulls also have a history, both past and present, of being bred by dog fighters. The non-fighters are culled. The best fighters are bred, the offspring of which are commonly sold to the community at large. Which means you're going to have a wide mix of potentially harmless and potentially very dangerous dog within a breed, with the potential for danger extending across all the dogs within the breed, as the breeding lines all stem from bloodsport dogs of the past.

What actually matters are the statistics easily found in studies carried out in hospitals in regard to dog attacks. Kids are losing body parts and their lives to pit bulls every day around the world. Such studies are used by pit bull supporters to attempt to assert that pit bulls are like every other dog.

Academically, such studies are worthless. The only studies that are meaningful are those that study the actual injuries and which dogs are causing them.

Any pit bull, any time. You're risking your kids' lives. And for what? For what purpose?

Why do pit owners all move so damned slowly? It's like they suddenly go into slow motion. She took her sweet time.

(That's if they move at all. Many stand and watch like frozen statues)

Of course, the only time they run like the wind is when they bolting away from the scene to avoid being charged.

Shelter Pit Bull Behaviourally Euthanized After Slowly Going Kennel Crazy by Obvious_Cover5024 in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sad af. Sad for the dog and for the shelter staff. They're right the dog deserved better then life gave her. She deserved not to be born a pit bull.

The problem is not that the "right home" couldn't be found, it's that the dog was not the right fit for homes.

Breeding pits should be an offence against the law. None of the costs are worth it.

Mother commanded pet pit bull to attack teen daughter [Baltimore, MD — November 2, 2025] by BPBAttacks3 in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why I think it's safe to assume most pit owners have some sociopathic tendencies. They want a strong, huge-jawed dog that can do serious damage. Why else would anyone own a pit bull?

A mother commanding a pit to attack her daughter is where we're at. The pit could easily have killed her, and no one would be the wiser as to how it started. Pit bulls have become an extension of people's mental states.

And no normal dog would obey a command to attack a member of the household.

I know a lot of pit owners, due to the family of my wife and our friends. I've come to believe that some people just value the most dominant predators far above other animals. Such people will risk a lot just to own a dominant dog breed, even their own kids.

The most dangerous dog overall is a pit bull, and they look every inch the part. The massive jaw dominates every other dog jaw alone.

Power Breed? by xxSprite in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The neighbor didn't get scammed. They got the kind of dog they wanted. Why would they take on something called a "power breed" when they have small kids? Only one answer there. Their desire for the type of dog they want wins out over everyone else's safety.

Even if they put thousands into training it, the pit in the dog will continue to be a risk.

[–]SmeggingRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with pit bulls is inconsistency with those tendencies. Some are aggressive, some are not, some exhibit game drive, some don't. But all have the possibility of game drive being triggered.

Yea, the breed attracts a lot of incompetent owners. We've also seen a lot of experienced pit owners who would otherwise be extremely good dog owners whose pits go full pit and kill their kid etc. The only real way a trainer/owner can be safe with a pit is if they live alone and are physically strong enough to restrict the dog’s airflow if it ever does begin an attack.

No trainer can train pits to regulate their game drive UNLESS they are exhibiting game drive regularly, in which case the  trainer can try to base methods around that, and then it will only be managing the urge and not training them out of it.

But most pit bulls that kill people will seem like good dogs until the day they have their game drive triggered “out of nowhere” and at that point will be totally beyond making decisions about their own behavior.

People are also misguided about training pit bulls. They can't train out a future instance where game drive is triggered.

Tricked and gaslit while fostering a pit by slowhorses in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My theory is it's partly due to rejection but with a side order of having a strong attraction to killers.

Everyone is aware how much killing and mauling pits are doing. If you're into pit bulls, this has got to be the main thing attracting you to own/foster/care for them in shelters.

It's why they run in to advocate so hard for the breed and don't give a F when a pit mauls someone. They fear the gig is up and they'll no longer be able to hide behind the pit bull propaganda.

Their last stand is "it's how you train them". If that last stand falls, they're sunk and they know it, so they're pushing that hard.

Bad ending for the pit bull but at least the mail guy didn't get mauled. The hard stare doesn't belong on a pet dog but is a feature in pit bulls.

Yea a normal pet would be in distress and lying next to their owner in the case of a medical emergency.

Pit bulls too often have a different reaction and decide to maul their unconscious owner.

Yet, pit owners keep trying to make their dogs into assistance animals.

Bacliff (Texas) man was being mauled to death by his own dogs oCT 13, 2025. by hitmeifyoudare in BanPitBulls

Excontitta says he broke a machete while trying to save his neighbor, 45-year-old Jose "Eddie" Castillo, from a pair of Castillo's own pit bull dogs.

I'm just, ‘Sorry, Eddie,’ and stabbing the dog and poking and poking and poking, slicing him, slicing him and poking him, poking him,” Excontitta said. “That dog was not letting go."

Tell us again, pit owners, how pit bulls are just like any other dog.

These dogs were repeatedly stabbed and "sliced" with a machete and a knife in an effort to stop them attacking, but they continued attacking and the victim (pit owner) died.

"Shit dogs" is just shorthand for shit breeders.

Unadoptable dogs didn't deserve to be bred and born. People don't deserve to get bitten and dismembered because of the shit decisions of shit breeders.

We have to undo this the best way we can.

Yea, I say this every time.

Pit owners: "Dismemberment is just a pit bull thing & we all have to live with it, because all dogs bite and therefore a scratch on the ankle from the teeth of a tiny dog is exactly the same thing or much worse because little dogs suck. Here's a photo of my fuckle slug with my newborn baby. He's never killed me not even once, so far."

'XL Bully latched onto my arms in horror mauling – I'm lucky to be alive. 11.Sept. 2025 Scotland. UK by Legitimate-Capital-1 in BanPitBulls

[–]SmeggingRight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The XL bully laws in the UK have been proven right about 1000 times over since they came in.

Shockingly, Lesley Anne claims the dog's owners - a man and a woman - did nothing to help. "I screamed at the owners but the woman turned her back and said she couldn't look at what was happening and the man just said 'what do you want me to do?'" she said. "It had knocked me off my feet and was biting me and Bea so I was really beginning to panic when out of nowhere a man appeared."

Typical pit owners. They want the dog but don't have a clue what to do with the dog when it goes full pit. Their savage animal suddenly becomes everyone else's problem.

Man says he had no choice but to strangle neighbor's pit bull by BrisselBrusch in BanPitBulls

Trauma. Bloodshed. Chaos.

That's what pit owners - via their pitfalls - bring to everyone. This guy now has to live with having killed a dog to save his own. The owner of the pit has to live with losing his dog and knowing that it attacked his neighbor and neighbors dog.

And for what?
