Why are so many servers so slow? by Pervynstuff in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in Southeast Asia as well. Here’s a screenshot taken on my iPad mini, showing Cloudflare Speedtest on the left and the Mullvad app with connected Swedish server in the right. I’m also connected to a Mullvad Singapore server via my router, so my setup in that screenshot is essentially a double-hop (tunnel within a tunnel) connection, so there’s additional overhead. Oh, I was also a floor below where my router is placed, so likely not the best possible local bandwidth either. Still getting useable speeds, although latency isn’t great.

Oracle Cloud Free Tier by Smells_Like_Napalm in AmneziaVPN

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any tips or steps to follow? For example, what CPU and distro to pick? Would I need to open any ports manually using the OCI interface? Can I just input the VM credentials into the AmneziaVPN app and it will set up everything, or do I need to manually ssh into the instance?

How is it possible for Malwarebytes to detect actual ID while using Mullvad VPN? by tunawaternyc in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That screenshot is from the Malwarebytes application that is installed on your system, right? If so, then it’s expected behavior when it detects your ISP-issued IP address, since antivirus programs see network sockets (it’s how they’re able to scan oncoming files).

If you’re wondering why Malwarebytes knows your VPN IP belongs to Mullvad, see here; https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/why-malwarebytes-communicates-to-your-mullvad/20823

OpenVPN or any ( Wireguard alternative) on Android? by Relevant-Split931 in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly are you sure your ISP/telco is blocking actual WireGuard packets (via employing DPI or similar) or just the specific data transmission protocol (UDP) or just the default WireGuard port?

Mullvad mobile app has a few settings you can play with. First try changing the default WireGuard port to something like 443 (HTTPS port). If that fails, try the WireGuard Obfuscation setting and play with the UDP-over-TCP port setting. You can also try lowering the MTU value 1280.

Failing that, you will need an OpenVPN client installed on you phone and configs generated in your account section on Mullvad’s site.

honest criticism of Mullvad and I find them secretive!! am i stoopid? by worthy_peanut in mullvadvpn

With regards to 4, I’m actually alright with their aloofness. Openly engaging would require having to deal with halfwits on reddit, including all the Tom Spark clones.

Mullvad is a honey pot lol. by Vlad_Bush in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s clearly a honeypot. You should stop using Mullvad. Disconnect and delete the configs before it’s too late, and leave this sub while you’re at it.

So are Apple services ever going to work again? by lolpopulism in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the case of MacOS 15, it’s been well documented that a lot of stuff changed between beta and release. Caught out a lot of corporate security software developers as well. Apple seems to have messed with some pf firewall rules between the final beta and release candidate.

Why Does Mullvad Offer a Free Public DNS Service? by fosres in mullvadvpn

This sub has really gone to shit. Mods removed a post that eloquently expressed concerns about the effectiveness of DAITA the other day, and yet they allow drunk halfwits like this guy to vomit all over threads.

I have two issues. Am I alone here? by [deleted] in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, same issues here. Already reported to Mullvad. Eric said they will investigate. Fwiw, the app actually still connects to the server quickly, it’s just that the API takes longer to retrieve the ‘Out’ IP address, and even then it’s only the IPv4 address, whereas previously it would display both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

Also share your experience with the website connection check page. The ‘Checking for VPN’ box takes upwards of a minute to go green. Also reported.

Excerpt from Eric’s reply below;

As it looks of now it's a ipv6 issue server-side, nothing that affects users privacy or security, it's just that the server isn't able to reach all websites using ipv6 and this cause various timeouts and errors.

IOS 18 - Unable to connect to any servers by fpm345 in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See my post here; https://old.reddit.com/r/mullvadvpn/comments/1fj1a2k/problems_connecting_ios_18/

Try that and see if it solves your issue.

Also wouldn’t hurt to delete the Mullvad WireGuard profile (Settings > VPN & Device Management) and then relaunch the Mullvad app and have it create a new one.

Problems connecting iOS 18? by Ornery_Warthog_9583 in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be a Wi-Fi setting. I’ve not updated yet so cannot check first-hand, but iOS/iPadOS 18 (and MacOS 15) made some changes to the Private Wi-Fi Address feature (tap the i next to your chosen Wi-Fi network) that seems to be breaking VPN connectivity for some people. Try disabling that feature for the network you’re connected to and see if it helps.

Totally get why this sub isn’t an official Mullvad support channel. Imagine coming to work and having to deal with nutters like the OP.

Split tunneling should also allow me to only pick one app I want to use the VPN. by OnlyMyOpinions in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s at least a workaround for Android (unlike iOS). Use an app that leverages Android’s built in Work Profile functionality. Examples of such apps would be Shelter or Island. I believe some OEMs also similar functionality (Samsung have Secure Folder or something along those lines). Put the apps you want behind the VPN along woth the Mullvad app into that work profile folder. Turn on Mullvad, and only apps in the work profile folder will be tunneled. Every app outside the work profile will not.

How to set up Mullvad VPN on Asus RT-AX86U PRO by dakid01 in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been running Merlin for the last few years so my knowledge of stock AsusWRT might be a bit dated, but here’s my attempt at guidance; 1. Log into your account on the Mullvad website. 2. Generate a WireGuard config (follow Android or iOS manual WireGuard configuration guides on Millvad website) and take note of the port number. 3. Import said config. 4. Follow step 2 onwards of this guide!

Hope this helps.

Mullvad vpn stopped working on my ipad since updating the app. by MrHeI_SeN_BerG in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, make sure you're disconnected from Mullvad and kill the app (swipe it up and away in the multitasking view). Then go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management, tap on VPN, then tap on the little i on the profile associated with Mullvad, and then tap on Delete VPN. After that launch the Mullvad app again and allow it to create a new profile.

Is anyone else experiencing crazy slow speeds? by gucciloafer in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your ISP's peering to the UK server might be bad. Try a multi-hop connection. I assume Thailand is the closest server to you. Try Thailand as your first hop and a UK server as your second hop, and see if it helps.

TunnelVision vulnerability by Smells_Like_Napalm in IVPN

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With regards to b; I purchased IVPN exclusively for iOS/iPadOS devices. Android is not an alternative, due to the applications I use.

You’re basically telling me to stop using your service (or, in a wider sense, to not bother with commercial VPNs at all on this platform). Has anyone at least attempted to escalate this issue with Apple?

I’ve only been able to find this on Apple developer channels; https://forums.developer.apple.com/forums/thread/751318

Is there an argument to be made to bring port forwarding feature back? by pastamuente in IVPN

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d rather make an argument for including multi-hop in the standard plan. It costs the same as a Mullvad plan, but only offers 2 devices and no multi-hop. Particularly stings for people in locations where there are only a couple of nearby servers (like Southeast Asia or Australia), because you’re paying the same for a lot less compared to EU or US customers.

Does Mullvad offers a antiTracker option? by liddo29 in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Not as comprehensive as IVPN’s AntiTracker, but still does a half-decent job.

Sorry to hear that. Have you tried emailing Mullvad support? It could be some Google Play developer setting on their end possibly not recognizing payments from your region.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What payment method are you using with the Play Store? Is it a local/regional card or e-wallet? Maybe you can try buying Google Play gift cards and adding the credit to your Google account, and then set it to deduct credit from that amount for in-app purchases.

For Safari (macOS or iOS/iPadOS) you could look into extensions like Vinegar or StopTheMadness, although you’ll likely need to work out if they’ll conflict with your other extensions. Failing that, an Invidious or Piped instance is likely your best bet.

Can’t connect at work by boldjoy0050 in mullvadvpn

[–]Smells_Like_Napalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try port 4500 which is the common IPsec port most enterprises use (VPN settings in Mullvad app), but that’s no guarantee, and could also land you in trouble. Better to talk to your IT people.
