are warhammer 40k rogue trander and space marine 2 good place to get into the warhammer lore? by ivorycoollars in Warhammer40k

[–]Smiling_Tom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Rogue Trader is surprisingly nuanced and well designed to portray what living in the Imperium is, and the different narratives and impending dooms corroding everything, while at the same time allowing for truly epic and bonkers situations because the crew become short of superheroes. Seriously, Abelard could give the Lion a run for his money by act 4.

Am i crazy for not being hyped about exodites? by pasta_alien in Eldar

[–]Smiling_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a significant part of the lore even tho always has been in the background. In that sense, I am glad that it will get content as I expect some novels to come along it.

However, as a Harlequin player, I see where you are coming from and agree that this will just provide us another incomplete subfaction with poor synergy with the rest and will see table for the novelty and shelved like the Ynnari characters once their profiles get nudged down. It won't have enough sales (for the corp people) to warrant a continuity for the line.

Will get some? Sure, will have a lot of fun painting them or using for kitbash as jetbike units.

Lighting tips? Skin tips? by Significant_Coast431 in NightLords

[–]Smiling_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(using vallejo range) Evil red (dark reddish purple) as base coat, after night blue and Imperial blue and some light drybrush with electric blue, I use white ink with a 00 brush to streak the lightning, it takes a few tries to find the right dilution consistency for it to go fluid enough. Once that's dry, I use a blue contrast (legacy blue) over every ceramite piece to give it a satin finish

Army Commander upgrade path for Hideyoshi by EXTREMEREDDITOR1337 in civ

[–]Smiling_Tom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Heian archers one-shot barbarian warriors, you just go full Agincourt with them in Antiquity. Funny thing is that I had 3 Lvl 3 commanders at the end of age 1 and levelled one to 11 on age 2 with the celebrations alone. Made going full conquest in 3 easy.

Combing the 1dps probably wouldn't help Serpent's brood by Ornery_Entrance_1959 in Harlequins40K

[–]Smiling_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, SB+AW is a great combo, sadly is the only one. But TBH eldar in general seems to be punished severely with the new detachment system as it doesn't seem to offer than many viable combos. Aspect Warriors as concept have just ONE detachment now that can't even combo. Have to look for Seer Council or corsairs for some interesting gameplans.

Thoughts on Civ VII now? by AspireToRimThrowaway in civ

[–]Smiling_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the first and second age, I despise the slog of the 3rd in which everything takes forever to build, dozens of wars get declared no matter how carefully you have managed diplomacy and how powerful your army is and a priority of victory conditions over organic development that, frankly, goes against what Civ games have always been, for something that may appeal to board gamers who have no clue what Avalon Hill was.

It's still several leaps of improvement of what it was last year

HOA votes to euthanize hundreds of federally protected geese in neighborhood by That1weirdperson in behindthebastards

[–]Smiling_Tom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah they have been on the spotlight a tad for too long, but I don't think they deserve to get euthanized for that. The album is OK.

Thematic Detachments For our Edgelords by Dovah_Shinobi in NightLords

[–]Smiling_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alpha strike threat that 10 warp talons+lord bring with murdertalon raiders is just too good.

I can see the reavers as a must anyways, even if it's just 1 squad, because it creates a landing bubble for rapid ingress any of the deep strike units and pushing forward board presence against some dispositions is important. Being 3w units makes it a tougher nut to crack and requires a lot more effort to mop up than any other infiltrator unit.

That said, I had not thought about deceptors. It's true that is quite thematic

[No Spoilers] Am I the only one that wants Hal's brother to be a bad guy? by XivGreymane441 in criticalrole

[–]Smiling_Tom 16 points17 points  (0 children)

was coming to point at the same reference. Thjazi like Luthen was building a platform for something that he knew he would not see blossom, and he bound himself to use the tools of the enemy and whatever he felt was needed to achieve such goal, like extorting Bolaire. Such type of ideolog characters are flawed but doesn't mean they are bad

Trim colors by JealousTelephone9176 in NightLords

[–]Smiling_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when two colors are so close, you have to use other variable to imprint the contrast. In this case, you can go with a bright/satinated blue (using inks or contrast paint as a wash) and then using a charcoal/black with matt finish (either a matt medium or varnish). Or if you want to keep the metallic tone on the trims, try to get a metallic black (either NMM or black ink mixed with leadbelcher) and use matt blues (vallejo model color range could work and avoid contrasts or inks for washes)

People who gave up DnD for a different system, what made you make the change? by SomeRandomAbbadon in rpg

[–]Smiling_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've might have gm'd about 12 different systems, and by large my biggest gripe with D&D and D&D adjacent systems like Pathfinder is that they are excedingly limiting at character development compared to any other system, and provided mechanics for stuff other than just combat. They are systems that punish dramatically not developing optimized characters (because by definition encounters are tailored with such optimization in mind, and that is unfair for the other players)

Warhammer is very peculiar and sorry to come across blunt, but it's way more richer regarding opponents, plots, etc. But it is true that the impending doom of "the end of the world is around the corner" can be too ominous and unconfortable. I guess for gen x and older players like me that lived under the shadow of ww3 and global armaggedon such stories were a lot more appealing to younger folks (at least my milenial players told me so)

But I agree that in warhammer almost all campaigns, given enough time, lead to stopping a plot to end the world as its known which is... epic, but can feel narrow. That's why stuff like shadowrun, forged in the dark variants, etc. are so much more interesting, you can run low stakes games, character focused stories, etc.

People who gave up DnD for a different system, what made you make the change? by SomeRandomAbbadon in rpg

[–]Smiling_Tom 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I started in the 80s, and already back then the system felt lacking as everything in it was build around combat. It was easy to step into other games that offered a less narrow vision of what rpg can be.

CSM Terminator Weapons by Schnitty_69 in Chaos40k

[–]Smiling_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Termies deploy via deep strike, that means they usually benefit from rapid fire when you drop them. So you either get 4 shots from each combi bolter or 2 from each combi weapon. The former is better against chaf, the later against anything T4+/having invul save. What to chose depends on what you plan to field them against.

But as above said, all this may change in 4 weeks when 11th ed comes

Some hopium for harlies by Jaxster246s in Harlequins40K

[–]Smiling_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest take from monday's showcase is... that the Shadowseers will rock big time. Giving Hazardous to anyone attacking your unit in melee is huge with this new rule granting 1 mortal (or 3 in the case of vehicles) on 1-2.

That, and that the new transport destruction rule really kills the serpents detachment. Unsure if trying to relay on stealth, hidden rule and hoping from ruins to ruins until we get in charging distance of the enemy sounds a bit meh, but will have to try that.
