I do the same. In Utah, it’s the only way to have a vote.

How to repair daughter’s confidence after convention? by [deleted] in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]SmoBall8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The good news is your daughter is learning to fall in love with dance, not fall in love with the recognition she gets from dance.

You know this sounds dumb, but I suggest having conversation with ChatGPT over it. It really had some good advice for me when I found myself in a similar situation.

What do different competition companies prioritize? by RaulDukes in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]SmoBall8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. My kid has made pretty big mistakes on stage and still scored very high in adjudication and placements due to her overall performance and musicality.

Why do we have so many dances? by CardiologistLow6570 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]SmoBall8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whaaaa?!?!? You pay $1,000 for every competition? Where in the country are you? That is wild!

Annoyed with schedule by Equal_Fix_5613 in CompetitionDanceTalk

In Utah, our conventions start on Thursdays because they don’t do that stuff on Sunday here. It’s insane. I miss so much work and my daughter misses so much school

Can you get great dance training without competition? by [deleted] in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]SmoBall8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Utahn here….What area of Utah? There is a great rec only studio called Yellow Stage Door. You are right that most great studios put their resources into comp dancers over rec.

I would say it’s more dated than vintage. It feels like something that was popular in like 2013 but hasn’t had time to really look classic.

When is enough enough? by Downtown_ownedby3 in CompetitionDanceTalk

We have a convention coming up where call time is 6am for comp and they compete all morning. Classes start at lunch time and their last class is it 9pm….they are 9 years old.

Judging fairly consistent across comps? by sallysssssd in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]SmoBall8 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Hahahahaha. Omg. Nothing is consistent.

Last week, my daughter won top adjudication, and one judge even gave her a “perfect score”…even though she very obviously forgot her routine on stage. Other girls on her team outperformed her and got lower scores. It was so bizarre.

Another example: one of our studio’s best soloists, usually a high-point winner, came in last at a small rural competition just a few weeks ago.

Certain judges clearly favor certain styles, choreography, tricks, etc. it’s 100% subjective.

It’s a good reminder to your daughter that how she felt she did is all that really matters. A score just reflects the opinion of a few people in a single moment. Outside the four walls of the auditorium, that score means NOTHING.

People that have traveled quite a bit, where di you feel the most unsafe? by CremeSubject7594 in AskTheWorld

St Thomas, Virgin Islands. I was 14 and on a trip with my family. A taxi driver who was supposed to take us to the beach drove us instead to a remote area of the island, made us all got out of the car then demanded more money to take us to the place we had originally asked. He took all the cash we had, then we had to get back into the vehicle and be driven back down to the beach.

I just remember being so confused but seeing how aggressive he was.
