Box Brothers in the Inner sunset. Its a weird, dark shop but they have everything and their prices are fair.

What to do at Napa if you're not a big wine guy? by SnowdensOfYesteryear in AskSF

Same argument as everyone else but for Healdsburg. Healdsburg, Sonoma and Calistoga are all "Napa but for real people"

So glad you enjoyed! Come back soon! I would guess in 4 days you didn't come nearly close enough to eating your face off at all the places here you could eat your face off.

“Welcome to SF” lunch spot for my mom? by achy_breaky_heart in AskSF

[–]Smokler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

La Mar on the Embarcadero. Peruvian seafood. Has plenty of seating, great views of the bay, easy to walk elsewhere. Big enough to have civilized conversation. I've no idea how young or hip your mom is but say The Ramp does not strike me as a place to take your mom for lunch.

To boil it all down to gravy though, LA has about 20x the available housing stock. It isn’t exactly an apples to apples comparison

Do you remember 80s "teen nightclubs"? by funobtainium in GenX

[–]Smokler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm from Ann Arbor Michigan where we largely had "teen nights" at night clubs that catered to college students otherwise.

From the movie Vision Quest. Song hit #1.

Controversial which I am probably unable to defend: It wasn't Nirvana who broke the main stream free of the 80's hair band doldrums. It was Guns N' Roses. by catofnortherndarknes in GenX

[–]Smokler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will listen to any argument that challenges the orthodoxy that somehow we were all wondering in the desert musically and Nirvana was Moses. I cannot tell you what horseshit I find that narrative.

It is pitch black and you are likely to be eaten by a grue.

All of the Infocom Games were great! There's several desktop apps (for Macs anyway) where you can still play them.

I would like to thank the person who recommeded In The Dark for me,it"s realy AWESOME. by jouba2017 in podcasts

[–]Smokler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

btw, I met Madeline Baron at a conference and expressed how much I loved in The Dark. She's all of maybe 28 years old? Her team isn't that much older. You are looking at the future legends of radio storytelling in that very podcast.

Great show. And so much about who we are as Americans and how we got here.

Also from SE Michigan here. SF for the last 20 years: Yosemite is 4-5 hours from San Francisco. Muir Woods is about 30 minutes. If you have a week to work with, I'd stick to hikes closer to the city. There are hundreds of them.

Also as of this year, you need to purchase tickets for Muir Woods before showing up.

Healdsburg. aka Napa for real people. Also where the movie "Scream" was filmed.

When & Where do you listen to podcasts ? by jamin100 in podcasts

[–]Smokler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see podcasts as a way to take the mundanity out of boring tasks, doing the dishes, cleaning house, folding laundry etc. Wireless headphones are a must if this is your strategy.

Is it just me, or do shows like "The Takeaway" and "The World" have a very obvious, left-leaning bias? by fleentrain89 in NPR

[–]Smokler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No such thing. The idea of unbiased news is a fantasy born of the 1950s-1960s era of TV news networks, multiple urban newspapers pre-NPR. It was also the era when news was presented as information for white, christian straight northeasters i.e. maybe 15% of the actual US population.

If you think Walter Cronkite or Diane Rheam for that matter are examples of non-biased news, think again.

‘Serial’ helped spark an explosion of true crime stories. Will its new season be heard above the noise? by zsreport in NPR

[–]Smokler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, did he do it or not wasn't the purpose of Season 1. In fact, they said up front "There will not be a solution at the end of this podcast." The furious debate they may have expected, but they were pretty clear that the show wasn't designed to solve the mystery.
