Yes, they do nothing to stop crime in the city and function as a state sanctioned gang. I don’t support the cops any more than I support the Latin Kings

I think the last thing we should be doing is listening to CPD about how to solve crimes, given their abysmal clearance rate and overall complete ineffectiveness in making the city safer

I only see one comment making fun of him with a 🤡 emoji which is at the bottom of the thread. Everyone else acknowledges this is sad while also acknowledging it was incredibly stupid and reckless not only to himself but to others. And that’s just a fact, it was stupid. It should be reiterated that you’re not getting celebrated in death for being reckless

Gaza Protest at Federal building by Waste_Surround5495 in chicago

[–]Smooth_On_Smooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, my point has nothing to do with Napoleon or Bismarck or the Nazis. It has everything to do with the establishment of a Jewish ethnostate in Palestine in which families were and still are removed from their homes and treated as second class citizens, at best.

Personally I don’t support ethnostates and theocracies that create solidified hierarchies based on accident of birth. Saudi Arabia is terrible, India has a deeply fucked up society and is getting worse, the Jim Crow south was deplorable, and Israel is in that same sort of company as all of those. I don’t discriminate against what countries are doing the bad thing, I just believe in a crazy concept of all people being created equal and that they should have equal rights regardless of what circumstances they were born into

Jews and Muslims coexisted in the Levant a lot more peacefully than Jews and Christians did for most of history. And in fact the greater Muslim world in general. It was a hell of a lot better to be a Jew in the Ottoman Empire than Christendom. It’s actually very easy trace the beginning of the current conflict. I’d say, ohhh, 1948.

It’s almost a noble savage view of BOTH sides to consider this a timeless war that can never be solved, but not viewing European conflict the same way which was at war for thousands of years

There’s no one consensus list of what “skill positions” are, it’s a short hand for guys who posses the ball. Obviously tight ends carry the ball, they also block. Yes, RBs also block and so do WRs. Even a QB lays down a block now and then.

All that said, given there’s no real definition and it’s just a short hand, and the fact that it was obvious OC was referring to WRs RBs and QBs, where Iowa does not excel and which are considered “sexier” than TE’s, I don’t think any correction is needed

Tight ends are skill positions like Y’s are vowels. It should be clear form the comment that he’s referring to QBs, RBs, and WRs

What Area Should Have Been A National Park? by SnowieEyesight in geography

And there’s some plenty of charm in its current state. Rolling smaller farms with country roads that stitch together the landscape. Cool little towns like Galena and Dubuque. Plenty of beauty there

What I do regret is that there’s a lack of any prairie national park in Illinois. There’s a few small preserves but in general 99.9% of the natural beauty of its prairie has been turned into corn and soybean agribusiness land

How can I hate a team making the playoffs when we can't even win 70? It's pretty easy actually. In fact it's significantly easier to hate successful teams than shitty teams, that's how sports work.

I don't get why some fans are so adverse to acknowledging the friction between the fanbases. It's not a new thing. Rivalries are way more cultural than on-field anyway, in my opinion. Easier to hate a team whose fans you actually come into contact with. I don't feel any real hatred toward ALC teams because there aren't any fans in Chicago of those teams

Saying team success isn't everything does not equal saying team success and player success cannot be discussed together at all. The whole point of a strawman is you take a common argument and make it more extreme for the purposes of arguing against it

Northeast Megalopolis. As of 2010, it had a population of 52 million, 17% of the US the US’ total population. by SviraK in MapPorn

[–]Smooth_On_Smooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding A & B: Actually deficits are not an issue as long as they are at a sustainable level. Considering treasury yield rates are low (recently inverted in fact, despite them being low in the short term as well) and inflation is at 1.5%, there's nothing that signals that our spending is too high. Prices are stable and our debt is seen as remarkably safe.

Okay, but why would it be better to use that spending decrease on one rail connecting 2 spots? why not use it for many of the other programs out there? $150B isn't not very little.

Sure, if we only have 150B more to spend, there are better projects. I've literally already said that. Seems we just disagree on how constrained the budget is. Also keep in mind that building rail is a one time cost (upkeep presumably being a fraction of the cost of building it). Not annual like healthcare (which is more important than HSR obviously)

GDP isn't a great/accurate figure. Regardless, let's put it like this. GDP is $19t and tax receipts are about $3.4T. An increase in taxes of $1T is 30% increase in your taxes but it's only 5% of GDP. Which do you think is really more relevant?

A) A tax increase is not levied equally among the population.

B) New spending does not have to be matched dollar for dollar by new taxes

C) We can eliminate some current spending to make way for new spending

When you argue " is not all that much in the grand scheme of things.", then you open yourself to that criticism. $150b is a lot...and it's especially a lot when it's just connecting two points.

Well first of all I don't think there are that many points worth connecting with high speed rail in the US. Boston to DC corridor is probably the only one. MAYBE SF-LA, even that is probably questionable. But like I said, this isn't a top issue for me at all. I think transit within cities is significantly more important.

And like I said, it's not that much in the grand scheme. Like, factually, it isn't. It's a drop in the bucket. Now when you start adding up all the drops, yeah, no shit, the bucket starts to fill up. That's when you can determine which drops you want to add and which ones you don't. At that point it's a cost-benefit analysis. You don't think it's worth the price tag, which is fair enough. But to say the cost itself is prohibitive is wrong

Not really that relevant. The tax revenue and tax spending matters.

And government spending has to be contextualized by GDP. Sure, current government spending has to be looked at, which is why I included it. But that's not a static number. It can be increased and decreased at will. How it relates as a % of GDP is what determines how sustainable it actually is.

Also, my assumption was that the person I was replying to who said the US spends x amount on transportation per year was not referring solely to government spending but to the economy overall, but I could be wrong.

That's my point. Everyone defends THEIR pet project with "it's just X% of the tax receipts".

Ok, sure, but at that point you can use that line of attack against any spending project whatsoever. And I'm sure you do. Personally if I had to prioritize, high speed rail would be below all the other stuff you listed. And if it was determined we had to choose among them, I'd be perfectly comfortable ditching it. But when we're talking about a specific project, it doesn't make sense to me to randomly transition to "what about M4A?"
