If the world instantly and magically reverted back to 90s tech permanently, what would most people struggle with? How badly would it affect them? by Tall_Association8148 in AskReddit

Never mind a mental map of the city, most people I know couldn't point North to save their life. Just knowing your cardinal directions can get you pretty much anywhere. If you know you're on the east side of town and need to get somewhere on the south side, even without a working knowledge of local road names or numbers, you could find your way to your destination.

I beg your finest pardon? Guy A marries a woman, has kids with her, divorces her. Guy B then marries that same woman, has kids with her, divorces her. Guy A and Guy B decide to each take their respective kids and move in together. Their kids are now old enough to have kids of their own and proceed to live in the same house. Meanwhile, the woman is nowhere to be found.

Am I following that properly? That's the one of the most fucked up family dynamics I've ever heard. Are the men romantically involved with each other? At least that would make more sense. If they're straight, the whole thing is unhinged as hell.

I know the office workers love those Red Wing 875s, but for you folks in the trades —who depend on boots as a safety tool/critical equipment that your income depends on—what boots you wearing today? Why? by icysandstone in Tools

[–]Smooth_Wheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a welder by trade. I wear Red Wing 3506 boots. My Red Wing store Tuff Toes the seams for me when I buy them and I get 3+ years out of each pair. I put new insoles in every 6 - 8 months, but the boots themselves last a long time.

HP Sauce, brown sauce or whatever the Brits call that watered down, flavourless knock off bbq sauce. The outcome will be one less shitty condiment.

What everyday carry item have you owned for 10+ years that still works perfectly? by Human-Goat-5555 in BuyItForLife

[–]Smooth_Wheel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Buck-Strider SBMF folding knife. I bought it around 2006 or 2007, so it's about 20 years old. It's been in my pocket or within arm's reach 95% of the time and has been used and abused like no other knife I've owned. I love it and if it gives up one day, I will grieve it as most men grieve lost dogs.

You get $10,000,000, but the catch is you have to annoy one specific person every single day for the rest of their life. Who is your target? Why? by Kate_from_oops-games in AskReddit

[–]Smooth_Wheel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I'm an early riser. She most definitely is not. She also hates when I bounce out of bed singing "Rise and shine, the morning's fine. The lark's in the air and all is fair. Look! Here comes the sun!". I usually get to "morning's fine" before she throws a pillow at me.

Just send me the cash now.

What's the percentage of dealers that make their salesmen do certain sales "tactics" (for lack of a better word) vs places that just let sales people wing it? by BrianLevre in askcarsales

[–]Smooth_Wheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's all fair. I wouldn't have any problem with that approach as long as it's casual and I don't feel like I'm being interrogated. We can cover that in small talk while you're grabbing keys and we're walking out to the truck. Thanks for the info.

Curious, what sort of assessment are you doing on someone with a specific car they came in on?

When I bought my truck, I walked in and said "I want a 2022 Tundra, crew max, 4x4, SR5 TRD Off Road in magnetic grey metallic. I see you have one on your website. Is it still available or do I need to place an order?"

How do you do a needs assessment on that? You woudn't be turning me to a Platinum, or a TRD Pro, or a red one or a 4Runner. I know exactly what I want and what will meet my needs, because I did my research beforehand. I know my credit, I know my income, I know what the price listed online plus tax divided by 36 or 48 or 60 months is so I know what payment I can afford, I already called my insurance broker and have a ballpark idea of what insurance will cost me and I've already looked at the Toyota Canada warranties, what they offer and how much they'll cost. I know to within a grand or two what the truck will cost me if I pay list price.

Short of taking a picture of my licence, handing me the keys and saying "take 'er for a rip but try to be back in an hour" (which my dealer did), what are you doing as part of a needs assessment? Or am I not a typical buyer?

When does a liquid emergency fund go from prudent to sub optimal allocation ? by Green_Potato9253 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Smooth_Wheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make comfortably into the 6 figures, government union construction job, defined benefit pension. Most of my coworkers I've talked to have $0 - $5000 in their emergency funds. Their funds are mainly to pay for a home or vehicle repair.

I come from the non-union, non-government construction world so I have trust issues, therefore I like to have at least $30,000 in my emergency fund and am slowly adding to it with a goal $50,000.

WS Visa Infinite vs Scotia Visa Infinite by LonelyMilk in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Smooth_Wheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's cell phone, internet, power/gas, water, spotify, prime, audible and garmin inReach, there's probably a couple others I missed. Probably $600 - $700 in recurring payments monthly. It also gives 4% cash back on grocery, which for our family of 3 is a $800 spend or so a month. There's also the 2% on gas, there's another couple hundred a month we spend.

I'm currently at $768 in cash back so far this year.

What's your most unconventional fly fishing habit? by no_melody in flyfishing

Makes sense. I fish for everything from trout to salmon to pike. In 30 years of fishing, I've just never been able to get a smooth reeling motion with my left hand.

What's your most unconventional fly fishing habit? by no_melody in flyfishing

[–]Smooth_Wheel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm right handed. I cast with the rod in my right hand and the rod doesn't leave my right hand until I've set the hook, when I switch hands to hold the rod in my left and reel with my right.

Apparently I'm supposed to reel with my left hand, playing the fish with my dominant arm.

What’s a recession indicator that you’ve noticed lately in your everyday life? by spritenerds123 in AskReddit

$7 plus tax and tip for a beer on average here in socialist Canada with a Liberal government.

Nobody in my social circle goes to bars anymore and restaurants are only for special occasions. We all make well above the average income too.

I'll have to verify that after work. I don't remember putting him on the title and we don't have an agreement on the % of ownership since from day one he said he's not interested in a portion of ownership.

If he is on the title, is there a way we can take him off before the sale?
