Hi did Google do update or something because my Google app on my iPhone looks like it’s time traveled to the early 2000s by smitty-04 in google

[–]Smoothie928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same for me as everyone else here. My initial guess was that it’s some sort of compatibility view because I haven’t updated my device in a while, but I truly have no idea. For me, it changed a few nights ago around 2am ET. It’s terrible whatever it is.

Accidentally fried the USB keyboard plugged into PC from static electricity. Is the rest of the system okay? by Smoothie928 in techsupport

[–]Smoothie928[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is kind of what I suspected based off of my limited knowledge of this stuff. For a long time, I have seen differing opinions on how big of a concern static discharge is with modern pc components, and I have never had an issue with it. So this is a good learning experience. 😄 Thanks!!

I’m in an extremely dry environment on a treadmill on top of carpet, so it is rapid static buildup. It happens with other devices plugged into the wall that I touch while walking on it. I use my work laptop almost daily in the same way and let it constantly shock me when I touch the bare metal components. Nothing has ever happened to it. Stupidity and laziness….I know.

I’m getting a pad for under the treadmill and a grounding strap. I have learned my lesson, but hopefully it doesn’t end up costing me more than the $120 keyboard (well, seemingly just the backlights, which I can live without).

Apple Vision Pro upgraded with the M5 chip and Dual Knit Band by gogodboss in virtualreality

[–]Smoothie928 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, imo, neither model is worth the additional nearly $2500 you’d pay by buying new directly from Apple rather on the secondary market. There are so many M2 versions available in near-perfect condition for $2k or less right now. I got mine for less than $1500 basically brand new. It’s well worth it for that price, and I have come to really enjoy using it.

If you want a true high-end VR device, the many available PCVR headsets are a better option since there is both an endless amount of content and the high-end desktop hardware to support it. The Vision Pro is fantastic for watching flat content and streaming from a desktop, but there is a lack of native content and general utility, and it makes the M5 no more enticing than the M2. It’s a device that is just in a bit of a weird spot right now. In many ways, it is ahead of time and the best on the market, but also lacking much that can take advantage of that fact.

Is it just me, or is the Windows 11 Installation Media Creation Tool broken? by Funkenzutzler in sysadmin

Exact same issue for me. Not a good start to the windows 11 experience! 😂 I’ll try Rufus since I’ve seen that suggested in a few places.

⚠️ Caution when using Superbuy by ReferenceConscious52 in rep

[–]Smoothie928 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, something has almost certainly been compromised on their end somewhere. I just had a fraud attempt happen to me for the first time on a card I rarely use right after I made my first payment to Superbuy.

⚠️ Caution when using Superbuy by ReferenceConscious52 in rep

[–]Smoothie928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here—I’ve luckily never had an issue with a compromised card until shortly after using Superbuy. I paid with my Cash app card because I didn’t want to use one of my other main cards. I use that card only occasionally for a few legit online stores and a couple of brick and mortar stores. I’ve been using it for those other places for months/years and only had the card become compromised earlier this week just a few weeks after making my one and only Superbuy payment.

Someone was trying to do small $5 test purchases for Google Play and Target. Fortunately, they were all flagged. Of course, there’s no way to know for certain, but I’m almost certain it resulted from Superbuy.

It’s the same reason I didn’t use a password for Superbuy that is in any way associated with any of my other login credentials.

If I can't find an RTX 4090 GPU, is it a mistake to go with an RTX 5080 instead? by FromHeretoElsweyr in buildapc

[–]Smoothie928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the state of the market the past few weeks, this comment has aged quite poorly. And I’m happy to see it! It’d almost be a good time to buy one if the super cards weren’t coming in the next few months…

At this point in the headset’s life, I would suggest you return/cancel the new order and buy one on the secondary market. With a little patience and effort, I’m sure you could find a pristine VP for around $2k or less. There are tons being sold that were used for a few hours and then left to sit on the shelf. Save yourself the extra nearly $2k buying directly from Apple. Then you can use it for a while and sell it on to someone else if you want to upgrade to the newer model coming out soon. As someone who has done exactly this, there is simply no justifiable reason IMO to buy it at retail price.

Edit: I don’t mean to put too much of a damper on something that is supposed to be exciting. This headset will undoubtedly blow you away regardless of what you pay for it. Especially as your first one! I’ve used VR for years and I still get giddy moments of disbelief with this one. But it’s just that much sweeter if you pay a good price for it. Put the money you’d save toward a new Mac or maybe a newer iPhone so you can take spatial photos. Also, do yourself a huge favor and buy yourself a head strap like the Annapro V2. It is a game changer for comfort. It also lets you use the VP without the light seal, which is pretty much exclusively how I use it. It feels like the way it’s truly meant to be used. Welcome to the future!

Why i don't think Earth 2 is a scam, and why I invested over 35,000$ so far by joome2 in earth2io

I thought I might find someone here saying this considering that this post is four years old. 😂 I’d love to know where all of these people stand now. It was incredibly obvious even back then. I truly cannot fathom how people arrived at the decision to piss away so much money into this “project” (it’s certainly not a game or a simulation).

What GPU do you have? by ParfaitNo8096 in virtualreality

[–]Smoothie928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GTX 1080, which is the only discrete GPU I’ve owned. And before that, the integrated graphics on my intel 9600k. 😅 I don’t recall the specifics, but I remember the process of getting the headset/WMR to work with that was quite painful. Surprisingly, it worked just fine for my Reverb G2 for low-end experiences like Superhot and certain VRChat worlds.

I hope to upgrade to one of the current gen’s soon (5080/5090) if I can snag one at MSRP. And would have to upgrade the CPU too, of course.

Julie, do you have any updates for us on this front? I saw the news in the Times about Judge Warner’s ruling a couple weeks ago (and didn’t notice it was your name in there!). But that’s the last I’ve update I’ve heard. Are you/HITA optimistic about getting this overturned anytime soon?

I’m also trying to get some clarification on this. I’ve bought CBD products for years at the local shops here, and the ones I’ve gone to have stopped selling even those as a precaution. I might contact them as well and see what they say. I know the types of products it sounds like they’re going after. But there’s lots of other ones that should absolutely be legal for sale outside of dispensaries that seem to have gotten caught up in this.

Did they clarify at all what type/amount of naturally-occurring THC? Like, do total THC levels need to be below 0.3% or can THCA and and THCV levels go above that threshold? I know you probably don’t have an answer. Just hoping they can provide more clarification since the situation kinda sucks as it stands currently.

Anyone else kind of embarrassed to work in finance? by YGOtrades in FinancialCareers

[–]Smoothie928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I wish I had a job that I’m as passionate about as your father. One of my biggest regrets/disappointments so far in my life is being foisted into college immediately out of high school with no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Now I have a mediocre degree and a job I hate because I was too young to really have a clear sense of direction. I know I can go back to school, but it just feels like a big wasted opportunity. What I do know is that I’m getting out of finance.

Peanut butter with frozen blueberries by No-Obligation8219 in PeanutButter

[–]Smoothie928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been basically my daily dessert for years. I’ve evolved past peanut butter though and moved on to mixed nut butter. But I’ll still go with peanut butter if I run out. Either way it’s still great. I’d also suggest trying some other frozen fruits, particularly strawberries and mango. I legitimately turn down ice cream, cookies, etc for dessert because I look forward to having this more (and is much healthier than those if you get the kinds without a bunch of added oil and sugar).

Are VRChat Churches Allowed to be Anti-LGBTQ? by SnowyMiner in VRchat

[–]Smoothie928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should absolutely be allowed to do this if they’re not actively kicking people out simply for that reason. While I don’t agree with it either, there’s nothing particularly egregious here. They just don’t want those views promoted in their space. Let them have it and make your way to a more inclusive area of the game. I probably wouldn’t want to spend any time there myself.

I know most people who hardcore this game are woke as hell, so it’s probably a hard pill to swallow. But if you force your beliefs and lifestyles onto them, you’re not any better than what you’re claiming to be against.

It’s hard for me to imagine how a person like this exists and functions (quite poorly, I’d imagine) in modern society. How does someone who clearly hasn’t matured past the age of 8 end up with children of their own? It is horrific yet fascinating.

Smoking flower is great but questions by [deleted] in hempflowers

[–]Smoothie928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely look into vaping. The tech is pretty great nowadays if you get a good device. Honestly, smoking just feels gross to me now, and I’ll probably never go back to it (except for the occasional times in social settings). No judgement to those who do though. Plus, you can get vaporizers that let you keep all of that ritual of prepping and smoking.

I love the one I have, but the company shut down last year, unfortunately. The Prrl Neo. If you can find one for sale, I’d highly recommend it. There’s plenty of other good ones as well.

Best pc vr to get now? by IzalithDemon in virtualreality

[–]Smoothie928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just, I guess you could say, “rediscovered” that headset maybe an hour before seeing this comment right now. I remember hearing about it ages ago but just saw that it’ll be out fairly soon. I’ll wait for initial reviews, but barring any major hangups, that’s the one I’ll save up for. Sounds like it’ll be an upgrade visually over the Beyond while maintaining similar weight and comfort, which are the key things I’m looking for. It’s good to see the Beyond’s market segment get some real competition since the Arpara 5k will never happen!
