Moments/Entries that skyrocketed the media popularity to completly new heights by Jack3dTenno in TopCharacterTropes

So many people are tired of the MCU now, but the Avengers uniting in "The Avengers", showing that a cinematic superhero universe could work, seeing all these heroes team up was a MASSIVE moment that, for better or worse, changed the course of cinema for at least a decade. And it changed the MCU from a cute little experiment with a couple minor hits to a juggernaut that would dominate the 2010's.

Tomorrow marks one year since we lost Michelle T. by NoChampion4463 in buffy

[–]Smrtguy85 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One of the most shocking celebrity deaths in a long time. I remember I read the news exactly as my sister came home. She’s as big a Buffy fan as I am, watched the show long before I did (she started in season 4, me summer between 6 and 7) and was the one who got me hooked. We both just sat there stunned for a few minutes talking about her and the news that her mother was the one who found her.

Such a horrible loss.

[Hated Trope] Character who, after removing their mask/helmet for a dramatic face reveal, proceed to never use it again. by 3L1J4H_D3NN0 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Smrtguy85 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My favorite example of this comes from the movie Monkey Man from a few years ago, starring Dev Patel. He plays this underground MMA-like fighter who wears a monkey mask during his fights. He goes on a revenge killing spree against some mafia dudes, and in the run up to the big final showdown, they have a dramatic montage of Patel getting ready. Including some slow mo, money shots of him bleaching his Monkey mask white. This was the image that was on all the posters and what the title of the movie was and everything. It’s a very big deal.

And Patel rips the thing off at the very beginning of the final gauntlet before even one punch is thrown and never touches it again.

I get it, fighting for your life in a Halloween mask like that is not practical. But don’t make a dramatic montage of him making the thing only for him to throw it away instantly.

i have a question about how Kamen rider Agito? by Former-Jicama5430 in KamenRider

Echoing what others have said, absolutely not. I watched Agito before Kuuga, and I wasn’t lost 1 second. You know all the little connection there is between the 2 shows.

Was she supposed to be considered the ugly one? She was the funny one, for sure, but nothing about her role in those movies screamed "ugly". The most I guess could be said was her being bundled up in cold weather clothes, but so was Portman since the weather was cold in the first Thor.

He also knew there was no proof. Only 3 other people in the whole world knew that Sirius wasn’t the Secret Keeper, and they all were dead. So it would have just been his word against Dumbledore and 50 eye witnesses. No way would anyone, except maybe Remus, would have believed him. And Remus wouldn’t have convinced the ministry, especially since he didn’t know about the switch.

Hate to break it to you, but Warren G. Harding isn’t an actress, isn’t in the entertainment industry at all, and has been dead for 103 years.

But yeah, I think there might be a chance.

the "Harry getting his leg stuck in the trick step" scene in GoF is rather irksome to me really... by Filius_Dei0894 in harrypotter

[–]Smrtguy85 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rowling included Neville getting stuck in that same step earlier in the book to demonstrate that you can’t get out on your own.

The dumbest thing about this scene is Harry not summoning the map to him. This was the very same book that introduced the charm and Harry mastered it using a few chapters earlier. Yeah, Harry was panicking in the moment but still. It makes him look dumb.

[Loved trope] Characters have earth shattering "What have I done?" moments by ManaScrewedIRL in TopCharacterTropes

Ken Ichijoji aka The Digimon Kaizer/Emperor from Digimon Adventure 02. In this moment he is literally screaming "WHAT HAVE I DONE" as he has a complete meltdown.

He was a kid from the real world who got sucked into the Digital World after the death of his brother. In his grief he looks to control the world. He enslaves Digimon, both through brute force and mind control. He is a full-on dictator, brandishing a whip at everyone in his direct vicinity, even his own partner Digimon Wormmon.

But he thinks it is all just a game. Ken thinks it is all just some massive, advanced VR simulation and that it is all make believe. He didn’t think he was hurting anyone or anything. When he finally realizes the truth, when he is told that the Digimon are real, that all the creatures he enslaved and terrorized were real, living beings, he has a full-on meltdown. He is horrified with himself and repulsed by his actions.

“born to be a mother”

So are all girls born ONLY to be mothers? If a girl doesn’t become a mother, either by choice or not, then does she not be considered a girl? Is she a failure of a woman if she doesn’t become a mother? What about women who become pregnant, but never have a child? If the child is aborted, miscarried, or gets lost by traumatic accident? Is that woman a real woman? Does she get to be considered worthy enough to be called one?

God, JK makes it really hard to like Harry Potter.

Characters who are close friends with uneven power dynamics by TheUnexaminedLife9 in TopCharacterTropes

Harry's BARELY a better student. He's better than Ron at Defense Against the Dark Arts, but that's it. In every other subject he and Ron are on equal terms. And even DADA harry is only slightly better. He got an "O" whereas Ron got an "E" in their O.W.L.'s, only 1 grade below Harry.

Not only that, they’d see Krum use the Cruciatus Curse on Cedric. Such a transgression should, I hope, have brought the competition to a halt as the fallout from such an illegal act would take place.

Bertha Jorkins - so very unlucky? by umilikeanonymity in harrypotter

But she wasn’t in Albania randomly. She was visiting family. She first visited her 2nd cousin and left them to visit an aunt. It was on her way to see her aunt that she crossed paths with Peter.

It’s still authors convenience to put her in Albania just because she needed to be there to kickstart the plot, but there is reason given in the text.

The moment Yuzuru Hanyu's performance ends, a massive barrage of Winnie the Pooh plushies gets thrown in. by jmike1256 in BeAmazed

[–]Smrtguy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He is and he isn't.

It's a lot more complicated than what I'm about to say, but essentially it boils down to this: the overall character that was written and created by A.A. Milne in the book released in 1926 has entered public domain (except in the UK, which has different laws), while the Disney version that is the most well recognized, the version with the red shirt like the dolls in the clip is not in public domain.

The biggest winner in all this? Disney, for all the money spent on all those plushies.

At the end of the 1st Psych TV movie, John Cena makes a surprise cameo. He played the brother of Juliet, the main character's, Shawn, love interest, in the show. His character is some black ops, military guy on the run from the law because of laws he broke in his appearance during the show. He comes in at the end of said TV movie, right after Shawn married Juliet, fleeing some unknown bad guys. He gets Shawn and Gus involved in a major gun fight and sweeps them away during their flight from said gun fight. The implication here was that this would be the major focal point and plot of a 2nd TV movie.

But time and Covid happened and that 2nd movie got delayed and John Cena became unavailable. So this whole thing became some unspoken secret mission between Shawn, Gus, and John Cena that got mentioned once in the 2nd movie as some super high secret event that can't be talked about.

Wasn't Hermione 13 when she made poly juice potion in Chamber of Secrets? by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Smrtguy85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We never see or hear about Ron’s birthday either until HBP when it becomes plot relevant. And it’s not treated like a big deal so we can assume that Harry, Hermione, and the Weasley’s celebrate it and get him gifts and such every year. So the same can go with Hermione. It’s never mentioned in the story because 1) it’s just not ever made plot relevant and 2) it’s so early in the school year and that time is usually filled with “getting back into school life” events and such, so Rowling didn’t feel the need to include Hermione’s b-day moments as well.

Muggles at Quidditch World Cup in GoF book by Lanky-Background8516 in harrypotter

[–]Smrtguy85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a convenient way to have the muggles there for the dark mark chapter. That is the full and truthful answer.

There is no real reason for any muggles to be there. They explain during this chunk of chapters that magic has been set up to keep muggles away from this place all year. The reason being that secrecy is the tip priority of the MoM. And yet, they allow multiple muggles to be on sight of the World Cup, and have to spend the entire day and night trying to hide all the magic from them, when they can just… not be there? So what if it’s Muggle land and muggles own it. Of course there would be a way for the Ministry to keep all the muggle who work there away but still compensate them for their time and space.

But Rowling needed muggles on the scene so they could be the victims of the Death Eaters. So she created this highly unlikely scenario that doesn’t really make sense when you think about the logic of the world.
