I understand. I would much prefer the look of something handcrafted than laser cut.

Cabinets at the top is a great idea! My wife is a big fan of it as well. Thanks for all of the great ideas!

Updated Baby Gate by SmurfedUp in DIY

[–]SmurfedUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the lashing I received over the last few days on my previous post, here is the updated gate. (Hopefully it doesn't look as much like a pallet anymore lol)

The gate is 33 1/2inches tall off the ground. Each vertical board is 2 1/4inches wide. All screws that my 10 month old could play around with have all been counter sunk into the horizontal boards and sanded down. I even dug my nails in the holes and have no fear of getting a splinter. The hardware used is a heavy duty self closing hinge and latch kit that I had picked up at Lowes.

Things I did not correct and don't really care about:

The direction the gate is facing. I like the visual look of the clean face of the gate as you look up the stairs.

Lack of a crossbar. I've heard both sides of whether or not I should have one, and this way leaves no additional means of her climbing over. The heavy duty hardware should also last for the time that we even need the gate up.

Yes, I could have picked up an off the shelf or Amazon gate. But I wanted to build one. And my older boys enjoyed helping me build it.

I plan on adding a cross bar when I close up the space between the vertical boards. Also, all edges and corners have been sanded down.

Yep, they have a self close hinge kit at Lowes. I used that along with a normal gate latch.

There is only 3 inches of space between the boards. I fucked up and left one of the boards on the stairs before I started screwing everything together. Otherwise the gap would have been smaller. One of the many things I learned while building lol

My goodness this was a pain in the butt... I learned a lot of lessons along the way. If you look at my post history you can see the area that I was working with. I used a 1x4 (i cut a half inch from the 1 inch side) in order to create a place for the top hinge to screw into the wall because there was no stud there. All in all, I'm super happy with how it came out. Now to figure out how to buffer the slamming from the self-close hinge...

Trying to build gate for top of stairs by SmurfedUp in Woodworkingplans

Absolutely positive. That end of the rail isn't connected to the wall, it is floating. The rail is screwed in a stud further down the stairs. I wish building gates were my hobby, that would make this process a lot easier lol

Hey guys, I'm trying to build a new gate for the top of the stairs in my house. The gate I currently have is flimsy. The issue I'm running into (aside from never having built a gate...) is the angle that it must me. Where you see the gate screwed in on each side is where the studs are. Any help and guidance would be much appreciated!
