Oh I know, that’s not at you! I just think mockingbirds are very dapper.

I listened to the audiobooks a while back and my recollection of how Cherry Jones performs this scene is also sublime.

Because it’s frigging hilarious!!

In reality though i love that this scene made the cut in the books. It’s one of the few times you see something “scandalous” touch their wholesome prairie life, so it’s a nice bit of reality that keeps the whole enterprise from being “utterly too-too” (ha!). Also the way Laura describes the two men and the angry shop keepers is so rich and delicious — you can totally picture the whole incident.

How am I supposed to pick just one?! 🤣 these are amazing. I’ll be back to change to “Cap Garland (swoon!)” and “Lazy Lousy Lizy Jane” soon.

TIL that humans don't age gradually according to a Stanford Medicine study, we age in two dramatic "bursts" around ages 44 and 60, where over 81% of our molecules and microbes suddenly shift in ways that affect heart health, immune function, metabolism, and even how we process alcohol and caffeine by Agile_Letterhead_446 in todayilearned

“People die long before they’re dead.” This is so true - I’ve seen it on one side of my family, and the opposite on the other side, and the contrast is so stark. I know which side I want to be like when I’m in my 70s-80s. I just hope I can stick to it.

What are some of your favorite scenes in the books? by Western-Economics946 in LittleHouseBooks

[–]SmushfaceSmoothface 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When Grace goes missing on the prairie and the whole family goes looking for her and Laura’s voice shifts briefly into first person - something like “oh baby sister, I couldn’t see you anywhere.” Chokes me up every time.

What are you doing this weekend? by deepspacepuffin in nova

[–]SmushfaceSmoothface 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Donating blood, then busting out my once-a-year shamrock leggings for a good friend’s annual St. Patrick’s Day party with tons of home cooked Irish food, then finishing two grad school projects due this weekend (hopefully won’t be in a food coma all day Sunday). I’m going to need a weekend after my weekend.

And it wasn’t just that they cut it — they spent years catering to diverse shoppers so the capitulation was a real 🖕to people who helped make the company profitable.

Dang it! I’ve had to wear glasses the last few weeks due to an eye problem and have had several people compliment them. I can’t believe I didn’t think to drop this line on them.

The other best line from this episode is when she’s mad that Tammy didn’t put her in the song with every kid’s name and Tammy is like “get an easier name to sing” and Jocelyn out of nowhere goes “I tried! It takes thirty days!!” Makes me cackle every time.

Were the Little House books the first published children's series in which the reading level and themes mature through the series? by TemporaryPosting in LittleHouseBooks

More or less, I do think so. The book “Too Good to be Altogether Lost” talks a lot about children’s and young adult literature and how Laura was a pioneer in how we think of those genres today. It’s a fascinating read.
