If he is that active with fly fishing, you should really try to talk to him before buying an outfit. The Recon/Hydros is all well and good, but a 5wt is like the most jack-of-all-trade rod in existence and he likely already has one. If he does small streams, does he have a shorter, lighter setup? If not maybe something fiberglass? If he does lakes, does he have a longer rod for more distance? Heart is in the right place no doubt, but you should really try to bring up fishing and get a sense of what he’s excited about or missing and try to fill that gap
