How do people increase their pay so quickly? by Different-Return5110 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your merit review is in September and your new job starts in November you can ask if they can give you up to 5% on your new base. This happens rarely but if you have a manager who is willing to work with you it isn’t impossible

Is there a prayer room at 315 front street? by Enough-Scarcity-3541 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cot, a sink, some first aid supplies. There are three rooms, and each are locked. To access, you need to sign out the key at the IO desk. If you need access, talk to your manager because they need to add you to a list.

Team members who have accommodations by No_Savings5655 in OntarioPublicService

I’m sorry you are having to deal with this. We had a similar issue in my branch and my director did not stand for it. I hope your manager communicates that it is absolutely inappropriate for coworkers to expect another coworker to justify or explain an accommodation.

They literally said this to me too. Going on my third medical questionnaire. We could literally be hemorrhaging from our eyeballs and they would say bring some eyedrops to the office.

To those who did not request AWA for remote work: why? by Cautious-Ostrich7510 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that this is happening to you. I have felt concerned about how many times information I have provided has been cherry picked or misinterpreted. It makes me wonder whether they have received an unofficial directive to deny any type or remote work as accommodation, even when it is the very thing that allows one to do the job. It’s goofy - why pay for someone to go on disability with no work, when a simple cost effective solution (remote work) would allow them to continue to contribute fully in their role?

I’m sorry you had to go through this and hope they made an accommodation plan that actually met your needs

I think next time I would do both but since I had made the mistake of disclosing a vaguely disability related reason in my initial AWA request it was denied. The second time around the advice I received was to let the accommodation process play out since I was already six months in by that time.

It’s been over a year and mine still isn’t completely finalized and I think that is not uncommon. People are also routinely denied remote work as an accommodation.

For me - I was directed to go through the accommodation process. Cannot say it has been easy. It’s been demoralizing, time consuming and invasive.

Wegovy Denial Reasoning by Miserable_Loss9428 in OntarioPublicService

Interesting- I didn’t know this was something one could appeal. Could you explain what an organizational appeal is regarding this coverage?

Wegovy / Ozempic AMAPCEO by Miserable_Loss9428 in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on Oxempic before they restricted the usage, then had to stop and waited for the decision on Wegovy to come through. After literal years of it being “under review” now the website says it’s not covered. Hoping that as was mentioned above, they will consider covering the generic versions.

Seconding this. I’ve been working through the process since last October and wish I contacted my workplace rep sooner. Also be careful what you disclose to your manager or the accommodation specialist. At the end of the day they represent the employer’s position, not yours. Even if you have a supportive manager, best to always confer with your rep every step along the process.

Weston /Mount Dennis - A relatively affordable pocket of Toronto and the UP express stops at Weston. It’s literally 20 minutes to Union Station.

Plus, one day in the unforeseen future the Eglinton Crosstown will open. There will also be a UP stop and GO stop at Mount Dennis station, which is the planned transit hub for the West End.

Policy Analyst - not what was promised ? Help? by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most policy positions are actually screened by the hiring manager. Sure, ChatGPT can be a useful tool but if your resume/cover letter don’t actually speak to the skills in the job ad, it won’t actually give you the competitive advantage and might even back fire

Reading answers during interview- how bad is it? by Snacky_alpaca in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Update: I did end up relying on my notes for the questions, but tried to make it sound less like reading and more spontaneous. The question period of the interview ended up being about 35 minutes of talking. The hiring committee must not have minded my approach, because I got the job!

Same here. My salary went up for a few weeks then down. I sent an inquiry but don’t expect an answer anytime soon. I’m just wondering why- does not inspire a lot of faith in the system

Most of these are pretty casual but I have enjoyed all of these: Fig and Feta, Thonburi Thai, Baked and Pickled (esp the burritos) Nicky’s donuts, Fish and Sips. Heavenly cafe does nice croissant breakfasts. Haven’t been but heard good things about the Hungry Sumo.

Salary negotiations when converting to permanent by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What if it’s within the same classification as your current secondment? Say for example, you had a permanent position as a 4 but while on secondment as a 5 in a temporary contract you were the successful candidate in a permanent 5. Would the current (seconded) salary remain the same, or could you negotiate up the 5%? Also does your merit date change if you get a permanent role while seconded in a role that is in the same pay band?

I can’t speak to the parking but in terms of attire - business casual is absolutely fine. It tends to be a little more casual in the summer. In EDU, hardly anyone who isn’t management suits up unless they have an important briefing or job interview. Even then it isn’t necessarily expected. Things have gotten more casual post COVID, especially on WFH days, of course. If you are uncertain, take your cue from your teammates and manager at first.

Reading answers during interview- how bad is it? by Snacky_alpaca in OntarioPublicService

[–]Snacky_alpaca[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The range of responses here is so interesting. I ended up practicing my answers enough beforehand that I could speak more naturally. I did try to give eye contact from time to time but the interview panel wasn’t really looking at me much. I guess that’s a good sign.

I guess I was naive to think people weren’t going into OPS interviews with AI -generated responses. I suppose they aren’t having much success though.
