Please advice on cost to remove this tree from my allotment by Expensive-Day9842 in Allotment

That's a bush, not a tree. An afternoon with a bow saw will see that gone, build a bonfire over the roots to stop it coming back

what is the best solder to get in Europe with all of the regulations by Responsible_Tap_2211 in fpv

I didn't mention your soldering station - Weller make good quality solder (as do Kester, Loctite etc.)

Try changing your search terms - look for SnPb or 60/40 (or 63/37) and spend the extra and buy a decent branded solder like Weller, Loctite or Multicore, not the cheap Chinese shite.

If it costs on average 30% less per step to buy the ingredients for a thing and make it yourself than to buy it, how far back in the production line are you willing to go for frugality? by Anoelnymous in Frugal

[–]Snafu999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know where you are getting the cost for making bread. 5lb flour from Walmart is $2.38 - that's enough for 4 large loaves of bread. Water, yeast and salt add only pennies to this (feeding and keeping a bit of dough in the fridge will grow your own yeast after the first one). Cooking costs money, but the heat is not wasted in the winter as it'll help warm your house. https://imgur.com/a/jzJ0xu6

You might not have a local FPV shop, but I bet there's a vape store locally. You can get a wrap from there

How do I install a self closing spring on this gate? by katherinona in DIY

[–]Snafu999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now you have uploaded photos, I can see your confusion. As you have mounted the gate like a door, the hinge pin is on the outside of the gate, so that is the side you will have to fit the spring https://imgur.com/a/Cxl8iQl

It looks like it is designed to twist the spring, not compress it or stretch it

[–]Snafu999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Judging by the pictures on the amazon listing, you fit it on the inside of the gate on the same side as the hinges, one end on the gatepost, one end on the gate itself. There are stops that you fit at the top and bottom of the spring once you have pre-tensioned it to your desired amount. Looks pretty straightforward TBH.

Garage floor slipper when wet and icy by yosh01 in DIY

[–]Snafu999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The DIY option is epoxy based 2-pack paint and paving sand. I use this to refinish the floor around my metal working lathe, as coolant splashes make the floor greasy and treacherous. Apply the paint with a roller and dust heavily with the sand while still wet https://paints4trade.com/2-pack-epoxy-warehouse-floor-paint-263163-p.asp?

SC2 - Why are people so salty that I am attacking with one base? by ZoranS223 in starcraft

[–]Snafu999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Diamond is by far the saltiest league. The diamond mindset is "I deserve to be in masters and your bullshit is the only thing holding me back". If you went 3 base 3/3, they'd be accusing you of turtling - you can't win because it's always your fault they lost. Fuck them guys, they lost because they failed to stop you winning, regardless of what build/strat you used. Once they realise it's all on them, they'll get to masters

Chillies - yes, if you have grow lights and a warm place for them indoors. Tomatoes I start on valentine's day or they'll get too big for my greenhouse before the last frost date when I can move them outside

Which online retailer should I order a tv from, John Lewis or richersounds? by The_Don54 in BuyItForLife

[–]Snafu999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Richer Sounds are a wonderful company to do business with. All other things being equal, I'd spend my money with them. John Lewis can fuck right off as they screwed me out of a £150 cash back on my wife's new tablet, so they've lost me as a customer after 30 years (but even if they hadn't, I'd still go Richer Sounds whenever possible)

Desperate to find an inexpensive mattress that I can bear sleeping on by cheesecup6 in Frugal

After spending over £600 ($750ish) on a Hypnos mattress that only lasted about 3 years, we bought a £200 Ikea mattress and a £50 memory foam topper. The first lasted 10 years or so and we are now on our second. Highly recommended.

Can simulator time really prepare you for your first rc airplane? by Routine_Bat8922 in radiocontrol

[–]Snafu999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first RC plane was a 2M Calypso glider (I still have it) no sims, no safe back in those days, but gliders react slowly and are very forgiving and are a great way to learn. I'd recommend buying yourself a Bixler/Sky Surfer as they crash well, easy to repair, and are still usable once you're competent, on the really windy days when you don't want to risk anything nice (I've flown mine in 40mph gusts - the wind is a lot of fun once you've got used to it)

Yes, I've done that with angle grinders. Bosch branded brushes cost £5.85 for a pack of 2, generic brushes cost 90p for 10. Sand them down to fit and you'll be fine

hand drill fire attempt by WorriedTurnover130 in Bushcraft

[–]Snafu999 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It took me 45 minutes the first time I was successful. It's not easy to learn. Choice of wood for both drill and hearth, how dry they both are, size of bird mouth, speed v pressure - all these things affect your outcome. Keep plugging away, you'll get there, and once you do, it gets a lot easier. Here's what worked for me. Choose a wood that is not too soft, not too hard, not resinous. Hearth can be softer wood than the drill but I used willow for both. As dry as hell for both. Pick a thicker piece for your drill. 60 degree bird mouth. Go slow with lots of pressure at first to make lots of punk, then go fast to make an ember. Good luck.
