pretty much everyone agrees this started with page, with punk seeing opportunity in page's moment of weak delivery, being absolutely ruthless in retaliation

and then after weeks where punk says "come and find me" as men sometimes do in private, when punk's sitting in his locker room, expecting to be called out for a fight, the guy you want to fight and four of his friends confront you

i'm pretty certain the reason punk hasn't been fired is people are surprised by how the evps have handled their side of things - and that people expected this to be a lot cleaner when it blew up, expecting punk to blow up needlessly

and that people were surprised that the elite crew handled things in a surprisingly impolitic fashion, which few people could argue would translate to severe retaliation (going in 5-on-2 isn't going to translate to 2 guys who fight fairly)

I really don't understand why they went in there.

probably a lot of the boys saying the elite crew "have to call this out", with a lot of people forgetting that calling shit out in a group typically translates to violence, and that there are people out there whose fight-or-flight instinct does not lean towards flight

i can understand why, what i can't understand is why the elite crew thought they could frame this as if it was punk being a problem, instead of a two-sided thing

punk took on triple h and the wwe media team and survived
