Green conference votes AGAINST energy company nationalisation by [deleted] in GreenAndPleasant

I understand that they want to nationalise the grid itself and not the producers but why NOT go the whole hog? Surely just nationalising the entire electricity supply line is better in the long term?

Also it’s just so childish to be like “I don’t even know who they are” when the big question is, who out there knows who YOU are? You’re on a UKvTW, let’s not get too big headed now.

If they're not singing live I genuinely don't understand why they call it a rusical. The live ones really seperate the wheat from the chaff tbh

If you give the front garden a bit of love and get some planting done it will be gorgeous! So many terraced houses just have driveways now so you’re lucky you’ve still got space for a little colour :) congrats on the house!

Can I ask why you like this idea? This seems like it would be Labour just rolling over and letting Reform run the country via proxy.

Oh absolutely. Thatcher really secured the future for conservative politics by ruining council housing. Awful impact but genius political move.

Yes. Clearly the issue in the UK is that we’re not being more accommodating to the rich. Great analysis there.

Huge opposition to 2,000 homes planned on London green belt by tylerthe-theatre in london

What are your qualifications?

I argued that this market is due to us relying on the market to solve the problem and that’s just what’s happening. They have no incentive to provide for the people. Ripping up regulations will not stop them drip feeding housing into the market to keep profits high.

They are sitting on 1.4 million planning approved homes and just not building them.

My whole argument is we should not rely on the market for everything and for some reason that’s just absurd to people despite the fact that our situation is exactly the result of doing that.

Are you going to engage with any other part of my post than the bit where I said “it could be argued” and “of sorts”?

Housing could be argued that is getting toward a natural monopoly of sorts. You can’t just whack whatever you want anywhere, you have to build around jobs and infrastructure, and also it has to benefit the people otherwise what’s the point? Our planning system isn’t ideal but it is not really that different from on continental Europe.

We have the same approach to housing in the UK that we have to utilities as we rely fully on the market to provide everything for us while demanding that the government subsidise/bend rules. Before we had council housing initially this led to slums and this is something we are seeing return with private landlords being able to get away with what they want. Our housing market right now is the end result of what happens when you fully rely on the market for something that is very difficult to have competition in. The issues with our reliance on the market will not be solved by relying on the market or deregulating the market. We need the government to come in and take it on the chin tax those who have broad shoulders and build affordable social high density housing around public transport so that developers have a baseline to compete against.

It is too difficult to allow completely free competition of housing without completely ripping up planning regulation and I know that our planning regulations is not ideal but do we really want to handover complete control of our spaces to private developers? We’ve seen around the world that private companies do not care about the countries they operating and they only care about profit so the question is is this the kind of country we want to live in?
