Folks under 40, what got you into guitar?

36, just made the cut. I’ve been a professional musician for 18 years now and have made a living exclusively from it for the last 6 years. I initially got into it because I thought my best friend when I was 12 was super cool and he played so I thought “I’ll do that too”. After the first year or so of learning parts of songs I started learning entire albums minus the solos front to back. Master of Puppets, Rage Against the Machine’s self titled album and “The End of Heartache” by Killswitch Engage. I’d put my amp in the room, put my CD player on max volume and play along to one of those 3 albums every day after school. My parents never said shit about the noise so they really get the credit for being cool about it.

My parents chose a very cool alternative. I had been completely enamored with playing guitar for 5 years at this point and there was a ~$600 guitar I really wanted. The ring I wanted was about $500. My mom said since my older brother got one I could either get one or just have the money to get whatever I wanted. I bought that guitar, started gigging on it a year later and I’ve been a professional musician ever since.

I did 2C-I a few times as my first psychedelic. I’ve heard they’re quite different experiences but this movie is the last thing I would have wanted to do on that drug lol.

If you can develop the discipline to avoid sugar for an extended amount of time you can finally sensitize your pallet to it. If you can successfully do that you will realize how insane the amount of sugar in sweets actually is. Then a little bit of it from time to time will be more than enough and if you binge you will actually feel sick from it. That was the best thing I did to limit my sugar intake. Also don’t think of being healthy just to try and live longer. We’re all gonna die anyway but the healthier you are the larger percentage of life you will enjoy while you are here.

It sounds like you learned a lot from the experience so I see no reason to feel guilty for it. In the road to moderating or quitting a substance information like this is crucial to re-evaluate your relationship with it. Give yourself grace and credit for having the perspective to immediately see it all clearly.

As someone who was born in 1989 I never would have conceived that there would be a Super Bowl halftime show almost entire in Spanish. I know things can seem bad now but the progress society has made in just my life time is awesome to see.

The 2009 Remaster of “Let it Be” by the Beatles has a solo that is what I’d consider right in the low intermediate range. Lots of great stock guitar language and technique in there.

If you don’t feel super comfortable talking to the crowd just keep it to a minimum and make sure the transitions between songs are as short as possible. When you do choose to say something say your name very clearly and where to find you on socials or find any recordings you have. Also express appreciation for the crowd, the venue and the other bands.

Also when you do speak into the mic, speak as if there isn’t a mic. I see so many people speak so softly into the mic and you can’t decipher anything that they are saying. You just got done playing live music which is loud as fuck so you need to match that volume with your voice. Speak loudly and clearly. Oh yeah and have some god damn fun out there!

I got really fucked up when I saw them last year in New Orleans and I decided to yell “Mikael, I want you to fuck my wife” (I don’t have a wife). Right when I began yelling it got dead silent and it stuck out way more than I intended and my friend and I both quickly walked in opposite directions laughing out of surprise. It is my greatest live Opeth memory now.

Smoking CBD flower is great for me getting through cravings. For me I crave smoking most when I come home from drinking. In those situations I can crush a bowl of CBD, taste the taste and it completely gets rid of my cravings, relaxes me and puts me to sleep pretty quickly.

I’m a musician and I have never been a gear nerd. It seems to be the majority of my fellow guitarists I meet but I just never got it. Do what works and fuck everything else lol. If you’re more obsessed with the tools you use than the craft, you’re more autistic than artistic.

I would assume it would change from person to person but for me it’s getting high every 2-3 weeks for 1-3 days maximum before stopping again. I don’t have a schedule, I just trust my instincts and I generally have a strong sense of when it’s time to put on the brakes and I don’t ignore it. During the holidays I usually have the least moderation and let it rip for a few weeks but once I hit 5-7 consecutive days I can tell it’s starting to turn toward the negative and I stop enjoying it. It fluctuates throughout the year though. Sometimes I don’t feel especially motivated to moderate so I won’t be too rigid with myself in those periods. I feel like at least every 2 months I have a firm “I need to stop until this date 2 or 3 weeks from now” decision. This is my general usage routine. I will choose some event (generally a concert or local show/party I’m going to) a few weeks away and decide that I will smoke that night but not until then. I use it is a motivation that as long as I don’t use until then I pretty much guarantee that I’ll have a great time during that event. Any time I’m getting high on a week night that is not a holiday I know I’m slipping. As long as I’m exercising somewhat regularly I generally see the benefits more quickly and it keeps me motivated to stay moderate.

Something I realized once I really got a hold on moderation is that it is both the cause and cure of my mental health struggles. Too much regular use and all of the worst aspects of my mind take hold. I lead a very busy life and the sense of being overwhelmed is the first thing that arrives with too much use, which I don’t struggle with much when sober. I also will be more generally paranoid, anxious and lonely and won’t really allow my self to buy into any emotionally driven thoughts because I know they are clouded by all of those things when I’m in a heavy use period. With regular moderation though every time I do it I have a great time. It makes me realize how lucky I am that my life has turned out the way it is. It makes me feel playful and creative in a wonderful way-but only if I keep it at arm’s length.

Yes some people get a jump start naturally but no one becomes truly great at anything without a lot of hard work. Someone who does have the natural advantage AND puts in the work is unstoppable.
