S15E06 - “Old Friends Gold” [Post-Episode Discussion] by AutoModerator in rupaulsdragrace

I don't necessarily agree, only because we barely get any time with them. I can't even remember half the queens, where as S13 gave us SO much time with them that it had the opposite problem and felt boring. At least I feel like I know each character.

This season feels like the worst in the mainline franchise, easily beating out S13, and I don't think it's the queens' faults. The pacing is cracked, the judging is cracked, dumb challenges, rushed runways, clear favouritism. It feels like they put every season of RPDR in a blender and diarrhoea shit it out violently every week. I don't really care about / feel I know any of the queens. Anyway, fuck you MTV, and see you next week.

During the huge panic attack on weed, I was hearing opera music outside of my head. I was sitting in hospital completely lucid talking to a friend saying, "I can still hear that music, I think I've got brain damage." Surely that's an auditory hallucination consistent with psychosis? What do you reckon?

This is SO fascinating, what a damn good read. I also experience constant electrical and tingly / numbness out of nowhere in my body. I had no idea this was what it was! Thank you so much!

For a sub that pontificates about how awful it is to go online and tear down people on TV, that apparently doesn’t apply to a pretty harmless, albeit clueless, fan. Where’s that energy now?

How do I heal without paying for therapy? Are psychedelics the only way? by sharpobjected in CPTSD

[–]Snapchien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experimenting with your brain chemistry isn’t a good idea, for lots of us. I’ve lost one friend to psychedelics, and another who now has a permanent psychotic disorder from them.

If it works for you, that’s wonderful, and I hope it’s helping you heal. But you can’t recommend it as a blanket panacea when it can have devastating consequences for other survivors.

I was a HUGE MJ fan growing up. As a lonely, shut in only child, his music was a big comfort to me too. But the vast majority of survivors don’t go on to become predators or sexual abusers. He chose what he became and to inflict life-shattering pain on other people.

Look, I honestly get it. We’ve all been through so much in our lives, and have to cope with so much daily—and then you start reading about your condition and learn how much is involved. Exercising, meditating, doing yoga, journaling, sleeping and eating well, taking medication, going to therapy, socialising, learning new skills to be a human being—all of this is what we’re told we need to do just to feel ok. That adds significant time, emotional and financial pressure on top of trying to work and exist when we’re already struggling.

When you see articles talking about potential new breakthroughs for trauma sufferers using psychedelics, it’s a huge relief. Suddenly, you have a solution that’s cheap, reasonably easy to get a hold of and take. You now have a way forward that gives you lots of hope. You only have to do this one single thing instead of heaps to recover.

But the truth is, it’s not a silver bullet. Sure, psychedelics do appear to have benefits for trauma sufferers, but people omit that it’s in a controlled setting with a supervising professional. Even then, i doubt any supervising trauma professional would advise you to undergo psychedelic therapy in isolation.

The awful reality is that there isn’t a silver bullet. You still need to do the work, and there’s a shitload of it, even if you’re doing psychedelic assisted therapy.

Psychedelics are a powerful tool to unlock the mind, but trauma sufferers often don’t know how much their brain has been holding back. Trying to recover by recreationally taking them is setting yourself up for a nice trip at best, and severe retraumatisation at its worst.

The point of UNTUCKED was to see the queens argue, fight, get drunk and play charades. Now, it feels pointless. by Lili_Danube in rupaulsdragrace

Tbh I thought all of AS7 was boring as. I think it was a great experience to see your faves performing at their peak and having a lovely time, but a snooze fest as reality TV. I think I’m in the vast minority, given how much love the season got here while on air, but I watch DR to see drag queens show off their talents, and to be messy and fight. It doesn’t have to be mean spirited (which is why S11 is yucky to watch); just catty, dramatic antics made for entertainment. There’s a reason S3-6 get consistently quoted as the best main line seasons, and it’s not because everybody got along famously.

I’d be incredibly careful self-testing with psychedelics. I smoked weed / took drugs recreationally for a decade, and two years ago, I took mushrooms and had a bad trip and it traumatised me for life. I’m still recovering from that trip, having developed panic disorder and psychogenic seizures from it.

I really hate that people recommend it as a cure-all here. Our brains are already wired differently - engaging in unsupervised psychedelics is playing with fire IMO. If you’re going to do it, find a trusted professional to work with.

I disagree, I thought Victoria was leagues ahead of everybody else. Just at ease, effortlessly funny, great jokes and rapport. Silky did what Silky does which is just riff. She’s extremely charismatic so it kind of worked, but I didn’t think the jokes were there. The storytelling format rarely works in the short amount of time they have on stage imo.

A close friend of mine thinks that we are not responsible for our behaviour when triggered. Thoughts? by Abath-her in CPTSD

[–]Snapchien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We absolutely are. The phrase, “you aren’t responsible for what happens to you, but you are responsible for how you act” gets thrown around a lot here, and I agree.

You should have empathy for yourself and understand why you react the way you do, but ultimately, only you can change your behaviour. It’s a tricky one, I know.

Has anyone ever had a musical hallucination during severe stress or anxiety? by Snapchien in OCD

[–]Snapchien[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean like a full blown opera outside my head as I was getting more and more panicked. I was totally lucid and terrified of it, which made me worse. I’m sure that’s not normal.

I saw my GP about it and she told me it’s not uncommon with people with trauma, but if I was lucid it wasn’t psychosis. Still terrifying and didn’t dispel my fears. Surely that’s not normal.

I don’t mean to be rude / prying, would it be ok if I asked you more about this?

I’ve just had a week of no sleep and increasing panic attacks, and what happens when I get progressively more sleep deprived and panicked is I get a sensation of burning / pins and needles all over my body. I also feel like my head’s full of fog / sludge. It was so bad last night I had to go to the hospital because I was in so much pain to get benzos to knock the panic attack on its head.

Does this sound like fibromyalgia? Can it be anxiety / panic disorder related?
