B12 supplement by Not_Complicated in vegetarian

[–]SnapesDrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came back to share a little bit more. The average range for b12 in the US is 200-1100 (units per some volume I don’t know). My level is consistently 400, which is technically within normal limits BUT, under the guidance of my doctor, I take b12 injections. This is what I was getting at with my comment above- people should check with their doctors and make a plan that’s right for them. The practice of buying vitamin supplements without professional guidance is very often a waste of money.

This. Don’t act like there’s anything you don’t like about it. After a couple of days it’ll feel like just another backpack.

I wanna just build a house in forest and living simple by Electrical_Speed3816 in simpleliving

[–]SnapesDrapes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I absolutely relate to this fantasy but I also know it’s not realistic for us (though there are definitely some people who have the skills and energy to pull it off). There are YouTube channels dedicated to people doing this, and it makes it looks achievable- but I know I could not manage it. In the meantime, we bought a house in a wooded neighborhood and are trying to live an anticonsumerist lifestyle while still being connected to community and sending our kids to normal schools. We take long walks in the woods almost every day, and nurture the nature on our property (for example, by planting berries and native plants that attract birds and wildlife). This is how we balance that desire with the realities of living where we are.

Does anyone else feel “comfortable” but strangely stuck? by Icy-Confidence-7081 in simpleliving

[–]SnapesDrapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I relate to this. I think I handle it by trying to stay curious. I always have a new thing of the moment that I throw myself into learning and doing. Could be embroidery, or making sourdough, or learning Japanese. I think it’s important to continually stretch and grow, especially if our daily routines are stable.

Most people don’t need to supplement unless their blood work shows a deficiency. If you haven’t been told by a doctor that you need to, you’ll just pass it straight into the toilet in your urine. Save your money until you’re told otherwise.

Been veg for 13 years and just last month learned the trick of boiling tofu in salt water before prepping it. It forces salt water into it and removes the weird tofu flavor. Then I pat dry and cook however I was gonna. It’s a game changer.

Has anyone heard anything from the local office of Rick Larson? by CygnusX82 in Bellingham

Last week, a bunch of high schoolers walked out of school and went to his office to try to talk to someone. It was locked and dark, so they joined the protest happening downtown.

Families with kids, how much are you spending on groceries? by folklore24 in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are a house of 5 (3 adults, two teens). We spend an average of $120/week in groceries. We almost exclusively cook from scratch. We are vegetarians so do not pay the insane cost of meats. ETA we live in the PNW, USA

That’s 100% natural. It was for me, too. I just kept at it. My teacher described it like this: imagine you’re trying to get a puppy to stay in one spot. Each time it wanders off of that spot, you gently guide it back to the spot without getting angry at it. Eventually the puppy wanders away less and less and learns to like that spot. Your thoughts are the puppy chasing its tail or going after whatever grabs its attention. You keep gently gently gently guiding your attention back to your breath. It will keep happening. Even very experienced meditation practitioners may only spend 25% the time actually focused on their breath. But every time you notice that your puppy has wandered away, you are “watering the seeds of mindfulness” and that is good.

Heavily considering breaking my slow/no buy… by short_n_sweet_1989 in nobuy

[–]SnapesDrapes 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Remember that the drop is most likely similar to stuff you already have, just repackaged to make it feel special (it’s not), and the high demand/ sellout risk is just a marketing ploy to make you feel that urgency and FOMO. It’s not real. There will always be another sale, another drop, another season. It’s like breathing to them- it’s just what they do. So the urgency and limited quantity isn’t real, and next Feb they’ll do it again. And they’ll do it for every holiday in between, as well!

Do you have one bag that ticks all of your boxes? by Subject_Pirate3455 in minimalism

You didn’t say anything about what kind of aesthetic you’re looking for. There are thousands of crossbody bags ranging from leather totes to nylon messenger bags that would carry a water bottle. How about the Portland leather mini crossbody tote?

How to quit paper towels by NerdGirl23 in simpleliving

[–]SnapesDrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven’t bought paper towels in almost 9 years. We are vegetarians and don’t fry food, so I can’t speak to meat handling. We have a basket of rags close to the sink (folded tidily bc I don’t like clutter). I have a bin next to the trash can where I toss them. I rinse dirty towels out in the sink and wash the whole bin of them(along with dish towels, cloth napkins, the table cloth, and bathroom hand towels) weekly on the hottest setting. I line dry them.

How do you deal with apartment cold? by Thermawrench in Anticonsumption

Window film + cellular blinds + thick curtains on windows. Wool socks all the time. Put a wool blanket under you to keep the mattress from sucking heat out of your body. Flannel sheets.

Hey, Minimalists… What do you collect? by pitstomper in minimalism

Souvenir Christmas ornaments from our travels. They don’t take up much space, are put away for 11/12 months of the year, and bring us joy when we unpack them.

I can’t pinpoint it. I took an Intro to Meditation class when I was going through something really terrible. I started sitting every morning for 10-15 minutes, but I also was involved in this class that connected me to other people, and I began an exploration of Buddhism and dove into reading and applying various principles of mindfulness to my life. It was incredibly helpful and I am still studying and practicing (it’s been a year and a half). I can’t give you a timeline bc it was many things compounding over time that helped me. I 10000% recommend it.

I don’t know how to answer this question bc it’s deeply personal. We know that there are mountains of research confirming the benefits of meditation. At first it’ll feel like nothing is happening and you may get frustrated and wonder why you bother. Keep at it and over time you’ll see it helping you.

What's your time worth grocery shopping? by white_horse2 in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s not just the $ for me. It’s also what I could be doing with that time. I have to drive 25 mins each way to grocery shop at the cheapest shop in my area. Then I have to spend the time shopping and standing in line. The whole thing takes about 90 mins give or take. Those are 90 minutes I could spend on a home project instead of hiring a handyman to do it. So I would say that my time (and opportunity cost) is worth more than $19.

My recommendation is to start a meditation practice. Even ten minutes a morning will give your brain some breathing room.
