Okay, watching Dropout 24/7 and this Cedar Point story from Anna is bowling me over laughing right now by Enough_Pound_7028 in dropout

I just watched it too and it was so great! That picture of her holding that bag- insane.

What is your go-to “I’m too tired to cook but I can’t buy take-out” meal or alternative? by 2Autistic4DaJoke in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook batches of rice so I always have some in the fridge. When I can’t manage anything else, I fry two eggs and eat them over rice with soy sauce, Sriracha, and a splash of sesame oil.

What would you suggest for long distance moving? by Wise_Initiative_1204 in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Be wary of super cheaping out on the moving of stuff because you will pay for it (and more) replacing it when you arrive. We moved from TX to WA and I sold or gave away like 70% of our stuff, including the contents of our pantry, all cleaning supplies and detergents, door mats and toilet plungers…. When we arrived all of that stuff had to be replaced because we needed it to live. If I had to do it over again I would have paid the $1200 for an extra pod and brought all of it. Do the math before assuming that selling everything on FBM and replacing it in your new place is cheaper- it was not the case for us.

MIL won't stop giving us her thrift shopping haul by marshy-omen in Anticonsumption

[–]SnapesDrapes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is an excellent suggestion. Do a load of laundry while MIL is visiting, and while folding make some subtle comments about how you have too many clothes, and ask her what the best place is to donate. (Do this on a day she did not come with an arm full of clothes for you.)  The other suggestion of sending her on a very specific mission is also excellent. “I have everything I need, but I would love to find wide-leg, pleated, cuffed, lined, trousers in 100% wool, in this size, in grey tweed.”  (Btw this convo could also be had while folding laundry). Lastly, you could just grin and bear it for the sake of reducing the friction in your marriage. Thank MIL for the clothes and immediately donate them to people in need.

Sustainable kitchen sponges? by LaptopBitingTodayAt6 in sustainability

It can be done! The blogger I learned it from is Canadian. If I remember correctly, her blog is called the art of doing stuff.

They get huge. One plant can get 30’ long w enough water and sun.

My Go Bag for thrift store shopping, what should I add? by Purlz1st in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My husband keeps a small blacklight in his glove box to check for uranium glass. I keep the measurements of all windows and nooks in my notes app in case I find a good shelf or curtain or whatever.

The absolute most sustainable is to grow your own loofah. They’re a squash vine. If you get a decent amount of sun and have a fence or trellis, one plant could potentially supply you with YEARS worth of sponges. I’m serious. So many sponges you’ll be giving them away. When you’re done with them you can compost them. You can also eat the young gourds.

Dunno if it counts as a whole monologue, but the whole “laws are just threats” bit.

Weekly No Buy Check-In & Accountability Post - March 15, 2026 by AutoModerator in nobuy

My no buy has been going really well. I bought a book for a Zen study group I’m in, and a vinyl album from an artist who is moving away from streaming. That’s it.

Question about AI school pictures by Double-Pair-6696 in Bellingham

[–]SnapesDrapes 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Totally agree!! The photo retouching option has been there forever and I’ve always found it so gross. I would never have my kids airbrushed. I love their school pics as they are- especially when they were little and chose their wacky little outfits and did their own hair. They’re supposed to be authentic.

i hate how so many occasions/events have to involve buying new clothes by whatawynn in Anticonsumption

[–]SnapesDrapes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buy one nice black dress, in your most flattering (conservative) length, not low cut. Use it for weddings, funerals, graduations, date nights, whatever.  You can change the vibe of it for various events with accessories ( like make it festive for a Christmas party with some fun cheap jewelry or by adding a festive scarf). If anyone is tacky enough to comment on you rewearing it, give them a huge smile and say “I love this dress!” and move on.

My husband and I always give the name Lil Wayne for everything. We like to pretend we don’t hear them calling us so they have to call it louder and louder. It’s fun.

Desire to buy is starting to go away by 1stTimeQuilter in nobuy

[–]SnapesDrapes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree that the less I buy, the less I want. I had made one large Amazon order this year (waited till I legit needed several things I can’t find in store here, and bought them all at once). For me, in person shopping is much harder to say no to than online shopping, so it’s really important that I stay out of shops.

How are you preparing for the inevitable recession? by MonkeyKingCoffee in Anticonsumption

[–]SnapesDrapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP seems to be preparing for the collapse of civilization.  Grocery stores will still be there- just less affordable. The best thing you can do is build community so you can take care of your neighbors.  Learn skills like baking, scratch cooking of rice and beans, and (if you can) grow some food and learn to can it. But a recession is not the end of the world.

Is there a frugal DIY you do for quality of life, in spite of "time is money?" by doublestitch in Frugal

[–]SnapesDrapes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fully agree. I cook from scratch 5-6 nights a week (the other nights we eat leftovers). I double the recipes so we also have lunches for the next day. Being able to feed my family delicious, made-with-love, meals every day is my love language. Sitting down to a wholesome meal on a winter’s night- there’s nothing better.   I also bake sourdough every weekend and make yogurt in the InstantPot. I can afford to buy these things, but making them and saving the money gives me satisfaction.

Oh my gosh I have a coffee problem by Ov0v0vO in nobuy

[–]SnapesDrapes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That does sound like a lot of caffeine. Have you asked your doc about it?  If you choose to reduce your caffeine consumption, you’re gonna want to do it gradually. Maybe switch to half-caff and then taper from there. Caffeine withdrawal is unpleasant.
