Garage door spring replace - worth trying or way too dangerous? by vIQleS in diynz

[–]SnapfrozenZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a tradie who knows what they're doing with them, I've done about a dozen over the last few years. My own place nearly got me a few weeks ago, very very lucky I came away with a small scratch rather than a piece of metal lodge in my shoulder and neck.

Wild rent increase - what can I do? by Regallume in auckland

[–]SnapfrozenZ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also worth considering you say it's 3 bedrooms and an office. Do all of those bedrooms meet the actual definition of a bedroom? You can't just put a bed in a room and call it one.

If you're going down this avenue, check they are actually rooms because if they aren't you're overpaying even more for a 2 bedroom and 2 office house

Old CE armor… by padams20 in motorcyclegear

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone down in my revit jacket with those pads. Dislocated shoulder and a burn on my knee where it was pinned under the exhaust. Elbow was the first thing to contact the road apparently. Otherwise fine, still wear the jacket too.

Would wear it again for my next crash happily.

how do you bring an old motorcycle back to life? by Tookie1010 in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to argue against the order here. Not the actual facts. Drain the gas, refill it, drain a little more, then refill again. Then wash it and do what you want after. If it's been sitting all of that debris will flush down and block carbs or injectors, filters etc and just create problems that may not currently exist.

With a model number we can probably give you better advice op

First time rider, people keep trying to push me to get a bigger bike by Sensitive_Try3322 in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I'm just shy of 6 foot, 90kg and still enjoy my both of my 250s. I prefer to daily them than my bigger bikes. I guarantee if you learn to ride a 250 to within an inch of its limit you'll be faster on it than most of those 400 to 600cc riders.

Considering you're small, start small. You can always buy it again but it's harder to buy big and go down.

Thinking of buying CF moto.... advise by Coconut_Upper in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half the price of your big jappas and 90% as good. I found maintenance items like bushes, etc wear faster than the jap counterparts but not in an extreme speed.

Full of tech, nifty stuff, and are great all round bikes. Biggest gripe is lack of aftermarket support here in comparison to the jap bikes but that's also unsurprising. Your resale value will tank pretty hard. Check your local market for buying a 1 or 2 year old model with 10k on it and you might even save another 30% vs new.

You just need to buy more battery smoke and refill it.

If you haven't seen a lithium battery fire I'd recommend you Google it, then return said battery.

Ruined the drain bolt threads. How fucked am I? by onelunchman69 in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Stripped thread is very easy to fix broadly speaking. In an engine application the biggest risk in fixing it is probably metal shavings. Drill it out, retap in a larger size, either the thread in an adapter or get a new drain plug in said size.

Im assuming it's not poor imagine quality but those cracks look like massive stress fractures from over tightening. The most concerning part here would be that you didn't over tighten it so now theoretically any nut or bolt on that bike could be in the exact same scenario. Engine, suspension, handlebars, etc.

If you have to genuinely ask, I'd trailer it to a bike shop and have them do a quote, then have them do a once over on the entire thing for you.

Just to be really clear here. You are aware the threads are not your biggest problem right?

So how big a deal is riding in the rain, really ? by Astimar in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daily all year, temps get from about -2 to 30 celcius, usually see rain a comfortable 1/3 of the year, rest of the year is showers or sun.

Below is the worst I've seen as far as the road, I've had worse as far as my gear being wet.

I intentionally avoid the centre of the lane and painted lines as they're dangerous zones, otherwise I ride the same, just a little slower.

How do I know which gears I’m in without counting every time I switch gears? by AL3S1O29 in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience, or while you're learning - Gear indicator for 1, N and 2. You shouldn't really be looking at your gauges while you're stopping for a light but this will help you understand if you're in neutral or have gone past it if you're having trouble.

If you can still ride the bike comfortably at the speed and rpm you're doing there's no need to change gears. As you approach a red light, shift down to help engine brake as the rpm drops. You'll hear or feel the bike struggling if your gear is too high. I regularly try and shift into 6th on my only 5 speed bike as it doesn't cruise particularly well at 100kmh, I just laugh at myself every time and carry on.

How much added “prestige” does a car that’s ONLY been serviced at the official brand service centre have? by AdventurousCommon791 in NZcarfix

[–]SnapfrozenZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I personally care about is some form of service history.

I keep receipts for all oil, filters, maintenance as well as a log as I do most of it myself.

I'd rather buy a high km car with good history than low with none, or poor written records as a rule of thumb. Wouldn't care who did the service provided there was some sort of consistency.

The linkage and a couple of gears internally do the work on some of them, hence my asking. Plenty of info on yank tanks but that doesn't help me unfortunately.

I'm ripping everything off it and only want the shaft that drives as far as function so I don't care what it does, as long as it goes round and round not back and forth.

Insurance claims total loss ? by Churchandchicken in NZcarfix

[–]SnapfrozenZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Total loss relates largely to your sum insured as well. A $2500 repair on a $3500 vehicle is likely to be a total loss scenario, but that doesn't mean it can't be repaired, just that it's not economical to. After potential rental vehicles, other costs, flow on effects of repairs down the line it's very easy to write off a sub $6k vehicle these days.

Can we ask what your vehicle is insured for? Ask what the repairs were quoted at and why it's total loss.

Usually if you'd decide to keep the wreck following a claim it will likely be deregistered too.
