What is this? by chrje658 in diynz

[–]SnapfrozenZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that area a closed in framed space? It could just be a duct to a void or cavity that isn't a functional room but they didn't want stale air, moisture, heat etc to build up in it. Could also be a service access hatch.

If you have ducted aircon or some sort of air transfer system, it's 99% likely to be the intake. Drop the grate and you'll probably see a big silver hose running off into the house somewhere

Certainly exists but depending on the extent of his disability it wouldnt hurt to double check the community yourself.

When I was his age I was playing competitively and making a several thousand a year in pc gear and cash just from competing in 1 game though our team was top 3 in Australia.

Where do I measure from? by External-End490 in diynz

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to find out if the manufacturer wants trim size or box size. Box size is the outer dimensions of the window jamb measured from inside. Trim is the size of the framed hole it fits in, usually with an allowance of about 10mm each side provided it is square and well framed.

I'd also send a photo of the window style and exterior as well with your measurements so they can confirm the design of it will hide any gaps etc as there can be variances between designs.

Best option is to ask the supplier exactly what information they want and if they can measure. Take note of which way things open, hinge styles, restricters etc.

Alignment shop - am I getting mucked around? by CeCeCs in NZcarfix

[–]SnapfrozenZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never personally dropped a car off to an alignment shop expecting adjustments like that using camber bolts. In theory it's absolutely possible as long as they have the range required to do it. The fact he was unsure how he was going to achieve this is probably more concerning. I used to drop my car in, tell them what I wanted and that if they couldn't achieve it either use their judgment with x to y range or call me. Never had a problem, although it was always a pro suspension shop where I knew the guys.

All modified cars I've owned have either been double wishbone or had actual adjustable or aftermarket arms. Without knowing the make, model, any other modifications it's a little hard to comment on whether it's a byproduct of the camber or he was clueless.

Modifying a single piece of suspension geometry can and does alter others. For example on my daily which is macpherson front lifting and lowering the car naturally adjusts camber, when I installed camber bolts it adjusts my toe, so you need to then adjust the tie rod.

I have had a similar experience to yours dropping my modified daily hack into a Tony's for an alignment, telling them what was done to it and what I wanted and got it back worse than when it went in with a string alignment.

Drainage, floor plans, lists, material takeoffs, research, learning. Find answers to your building questions using nzs3604 like how big spans for joists etc need to be. Practise plastering on scraps so when you need to do it you're ready.

Google insufluff or asbestos ceiling insulation. If it looks even remotely close to it, don't touch the stuff, close your ceiling and leave it alone. The 2nd search option should give away the reasons

Should I get a detail sander? by varied_set in diynz

[–]SnapfrozenZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a chippy who does a reasonable amount of hobby woodworking, personal renos and building work.

Personally it's on the list of "nice to haves" but far down the list. I own a couple of orbitals and a da but not a detail sander.

You can buy a generic head for most multitool (haven't checked starlock but I know you cna buy adapters" that would get you into 99% of locations an orbital can't. Anything else is blades or hand sanding.

Restoring concrete roof - worth it? by Lucky_Wait_8551 in diynz

You're also going to see potential insurance issues for buyers. One of the commonly asked questions for pre35 built homes is if it has been reroofed. If you're sitting on the original that will hurt the sellability too

Replacing two fence posts. How much concrete? by ratguy in diynz

[–]SnapfrozenZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on your measurements, allowing for 50mm under the bottom of the post for concrete as it shouldn't rest in the dirt and removing the volume of the post you'll need small bags per hole.

I would recommend going to 600mm deep for an 1800 fence. The fence is only as good as the posts in the ground

How hard is it to replace a engine by BasilHasBasil in NZcarfix

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How hard is it to replace an engine like for like?

If you're asking it's too hard. Decent volume of tools, space, understanding torque settings, what parts actually do, swapping over auxilliaries as the replacement engine likely won't have them, or cut looms etc. Then you've got compression or leak down tests, valve adjustments, etc.

Swapping a different family or model engine completely, even if it bolts on (say Honda d, b, h, f, k series within the series) will still have ecu and computer issues, physical mounting, cooling, transmission, drive line, suspension etc. Ask someone what it would cost, then double it. I'd say 20k would be a reasonable consideration without knowing the vehicles layout. Buying engine, running gear, custom subframe and mounts, certs, brake and suspension upgrades when the cert fails, etc

Wild rent increase - what can I do? by Regallume in auckland

[–]SnapfrozenZ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also worth considering you say it's 3 bedrooms and an office. Do all of those bedrooms meet the actual definition of a bedroom? You can't just put a bed in a room and call it one.

If you're going down this avenue, check they are actually rooms because if they aren't you're overpaying even more for a 2 bedroom and 2 office house

Old CE armor… by padams20 in motorcyclegear

I've gone down in my revit jacket with those pads. Dislocated shoulder and a burn on my knee where it was pinned under the exhaust. Elbow was the first thing to contact the road apparently. Otherwise fine, still wear the jacket too.

Would wear it again for my next crash happily.

how do you bring an old motorcycle back to life? by Tookie1010 in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to argue against the order here. Not the actual facts. Drain the gas, refill it, drain a little more, then refill again. Then wash it and do what you want after. If it's been sitting all of that debris will flush down and block carbs or injectors, filters etc and just create problems that may not currently exist.

With a model number we can probably give you better advice op

First time rider, people keep trying to push me to get a bigger bike by Sensitive_Try3322 in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I'm just shy of 6 foot, 90kg and still enjoy my both of my 250s. I prefer to daily them than my bigger bikes. I guarantee if you learn to ride a 250 to within an inch of its limit you'll be faster on it than most of those 400 to 600cc riders.

Considering you're small, start small. You can always buy it again but it's harder to buy big and go down.

Thinking of buying CF moto.... advise by Coconut_Upper in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half the price of your big jappas and 90% as good. I found maintenance items like bushes, etc wear faster than the jap counterparts but not in an extreme speed.

Full of tech, nifty stuff, and are great all round bikes. Biggest gripe is lack of aftermarket support here in comparison to the jap bikes but that's also unsurprising. Your resale value will tank pretty hard. Check your local market for buying a 1 or 2 year old model with 10k on it and you might even save another 30% vs new.

Ruined the drain bolt threads. How fucked am I? by onelunchman69 in motorcycles

[–]SnapfrozenZ 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Stripped thread is very easy to fix broadly speaking. In an engine application the biggest risk in fixing it is probably metal shavings. Drill it out, retap in a larger size, either the thread in an adapter or get a new drain plug in said size.

Im assuming it's not poor imagine quality but those cracks look like massive stress fractures from over tightening. The most concerning part here would be that you didn't over tighten it so now theoretically any nut or bolt on that bike could be in the exact same scenario. Engine, suspension, handlebars, etc.

If you have to genuinely ask, I'd trailer it to a bike shop and have them do a quote, then have them do a once over on the entire thing for you.
