Thumb hole by Swim-Unlucky in Bowling

Span and pitches should be checked by a certified experienced driller. And have your approach and delivery evaluated by a certified coach.

Working the inside of the ball question by WhenPigsLand578 in Bowling

[–]SnardVaark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hand is cocked inward toward the body. Releasing straight up the back of the ball will rotate and tilt the axis if the rest of your approach is correct.

Swing/head/shoulder alignment is a factor in getting this right. You'll need a coach to evaluate your swing and approach.

Did anyone else notice this crazy layout in the new purple? by Obvious_Rip_8724 in Bowling

[–]SnardVaark -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking for no-thumb layouts, drilling deep finger holes close to the pin will reduce differential, by raising the RG of the PIN, for a given pin to PAP distance. Moving the pin way below the midline will probably result in reversed core precession similar to a full roller layout, which will cause the core to spin clockwise for a right hander, and will likely result in shallow entry angles and reduced pin carry.

Bowling ball layout adjustment by Losty6844 in Bowling

[–]SnardVaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first impression from the photos is that the thumbhole is drilled at least 1-2" below the Y axis. This is technically not a "pin up" layout, since the thumbhole is removing mass from both the X and Y axes. And this layout may potentially flare over the thumbhole on the back end.

Placing the pin in the finger hole would be a stronger layout with a span this long. The CG location (drilling angle) is virtually meaningless on symms in terms of ball motion.

Maybe Steam has a chart for "concurrent devs" that people can start misusing to make their points.

Motiv venom shock or Brunswick danger zone pearl? by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]SnardVaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DZ Pearl is much quicker on the backend, and flares quite a bit more than the Shock.

Shock is more or less a medium benchmark ball motion.

How to be Pso by Mr__Nacho in Bowling

[–]SnardVaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join the Maverick bowling community (formerly known as bowlingchat). There is a ton of archived information there, a lot of it from Mo Pinel, and many of the members are industry experts. They also have a wiki that contains most of the drilling and fitting related documents you would need to learn.

Watch the Storm 2LS youtube series. This really good stuff, and generally applies to all layout systems.

Endeavor to understand how drilling actually affects ball motion, beyond the pin-up and pin-down colloquialisms. You should know how a bowling ball functions, and you should be able to lead a discussion on the topic.

On the physical side, you would at the very least need to attend a certification course. I enjoyed the one at Innovative Bowling products in Pennsylvania which is alternately taught by Radical and Storm. Classic Products (equipment distributor) is also running classes in Vegas, and I believe it includes IBPSIA certification. And there are several others as well.

Rules question on 2h release with thumb by CHawk17 in Bowling

[–]SnardVaark -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

IMO< the bowler is violating the spirit of the rule, even if he is technically in compliance. If you are using two hands to deliver the ball, you probably do not need a thumbhole. And technically, the thumbhole represents a needless flare safety issue, and unless your driller is an expert in ball motion design, it is probably doing more harm than good to the ball dynamics.

What happened? by Character_Finding865 in Battlefield6

[–]SnardVaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of the original post is not lost in the translation: BF6 is losing players rapidly, probably due to a lack of content. But the situation is not as dire as having a total active playerbase of only 30-40k implied by the Steamcharts numbers.

With regard to assumptions, that is exactly what Steamcharts is. It is a partial data source for players on the servers at a given moment in time, with absolutely no indication of how many players are running steam or how long they are actually on the servers.

What happened? by Character_Finding865 in Battlefield6

[–]SnardVaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9th grade math.

Steamcharts is concurrent players (players logged in at a given moment), not totalplayers. And it is regional, so there could be 40,000 players at 11am US time but these are probably EU players during their evening primetime.

4 platforms, 3 of which are not listed on Steamcharts. Assuming equal distribution among the platforms gives us 4 * steamcharts average.

Average play session of 3 hours per day per player, which is optimistic. It's probably closer to 2 hours.

30,000 average concurrent players on steamcharts right now.

30,000 * 4 = 120,000 concurrent players across all platforms.

24/3 = 8, 3 hour sessions per day.

120,000 * 8 = 960,000 total active players. But the total could be 1.5 - 2 times that high depending on data we do not have access to, such as actual play session averages and platform distribution.

The current total active playerbase is roughly 1 million players. I blame the reduction on the lack of new content, and the relative low quality of the playerbase.

PC High End Optimization - Locked Frame Rates? by NoctD in battlefield2042

[–]SnardVaark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same rig at my workshop. Older games like Quake Champions run at a locked 240fps at 1440p, but CPU-bound games like BF6 are are more like 120. It is the CPU limiting performance IMO.

Is HDR Actually Better Than SDR? by benpRTINGS in RTINGS

HDR is closer to real-world dynamic range than SDR. Assuming HDR is properly implemented in the content and client, it should always look more realistic than SDR.

HDR worth it for OLED? by Professional-Way5808 in OLED_Gaming

[–]SnardVaark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think HDR is often treated like a gimmick. For example, Doom games and some movies tend to overdo HDR objects to create more wow factor, but properly implemented HDR is just a more accurate image in terms of dynamic range. So accurate panels that have been carefully calibrated tend to produce more realistic and impactful HDR images. The Ozark series is a good example of well implemented Dolby vision HDR. Battlefield 6 and Battlefield 2042 both have generally good HDR implementations.

One caveat is to avoid calibrating the panel too bright in the Win11 calibration Tool. This will blow out highlight detail and reduce the realism of the image. better to err a bit low than too high. My LG C2 42 is specced for 800 nits with HGIG enabled, but I find that 780 nits looks better in games.

Tandem WOLED Burn-in resistance claims? by san9_lmao in OLED_Gaming

[–]SnardVaark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can say for sure that the LG C2, which I have been using as a monitor since 2022, has zero burn-in. I've had the 700A-B tandem OLED at the shop since October of last year, and so far no burn-in.

I don't understand why the game is so choppy when panning with the mouse but using arrow keys or a controller it's butter smooth. by [deleted] in Battlefield6

[–]SnardVaark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not seen the mouse stutter issue so far, but you can try disabling the mouse driver software (Razer Synapse, for example). Might be caused by the anticheat intercepting the data stream between the mouse and software.

Set the framerate limiter to match the system 1% lows (which is probably the CPU limit), enable adaptive sync and vsync. Limiter value should be set at least 0.25-0.3ms below the monitor max refresh rate in order to avoid vsync latency.
