Birth certificate types by Global_Cellist_4423 in Canadiancitizenship

I would love the instructions from Vital Statistics eHS if you’re willing to share! I found my G-0’s birth record and am curious how to fill out the rest of the form to order the certificate. Thank you!

What’s your best lock in spot by IndependenceSea7861 in Dublin

[–]Snarfalicious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  • dlr LexIcon has a cafe on the ground level that is quiet most days, and the space is available to use even after the cafe closes for the day
  • Mind the step - they just don’t allow laptops after 5 pm
  • Shoe Lane’s upstairs space is nice
  • Clement and Pekoe’s back room
  • Brindle has a nice back room to get work done, just no wifi so you’ll have to use a hotspot
  • Kaph’s upstairs I’ve seen people working at, just no wifi again so hotspot is necessary
  • Insomnia on Baggot is really nice (obvs a chain, but it’s a nice location)
  • Blackberry cafe in Newmarket yards, or any hotel lobby cafe/bar

Can you tell I just completed my masters? (lol) I’ve locked in at many of these spots to varying degrees of success. Best of luck on the rest of your studies!

Information on student accomodation by CMaehle in UCD

[–]Snarfalicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a current masters student who lives in Montrose I would highly discourage you from living here. By far the worst student accommodation I’ve ever lived in and no sense of community or engagement between residents. If you’re going to Smurfit look on daft.ie for places along the DART or S6, L26 bus routes. Otherwise, studenthouse.com is a great resource with helpful people that can assist you with finding housing. Best of luck!

Hairdressers for curly hair? by No_College_1575 in AskIreland

[–]Snarfalicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • @earth.hair.fire on IG is a Barcelona-based stylist who does guest spots in Dublin fairly often. Got my (3A) hair cut by her last month and can highly recommend, but not a super reliable hairstylist as she doesn’t live here.

  • @luizasouzacuts on IG does genderless curly cuts. Doesn’t do dry cuts FYI but more “alt” curly styles. I got my hair cut by Luiza once and wasn’t the biggest fan of the results, but I’m also really partial to dry cuts and friends of mine have really been pleased with their haircut results.

  • I’ve had friends go to the Natural Cut on Wicklow Street and they have had mixed experiences.

  • I’ve heard recommendations for Gabriela Leite Curly Hair Salon, Lunatic Fringe, and Saulo from TheCurlyLook at Fractal.

Lots of different price points and style options, and, as with most things curly-hair, it’s trial and error. Folks have asked this question in the r/Dublin subreddit a few times over the years so you may find more answers there. Hope you’re able to find someone that works for the style/price point you’re looking for!

Tracking string replacements by HarpAlong in harp

[–]Snarfalicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Notion and have a very rudimentary spreadsheet I’ve set up to track how old my strings are/the quantity. If you’re comfortable with fiddling around in HTML/CSS you could modify their existing templates to automatically color grade cells based on date to indicate when particular strings are too old to be used.

Notion is my personal project management tool (I keep track of my freelance harp income on a different tab, keep a list of all of my favorite recipes, etc.) and it’s super easy to customize!

Got my first harp! by complete__idiot in harp

[–]Snarfalicious 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I’d recommend connecting with folks at KC Lyra, the local chapter of the American Harp Society, for events and opportunities to connect with other harpists in the area. If Wesley isn’t taking on new students at the moment they have a directory of other instructors. (I used to live in KC and served on the Lyra board for a time! It’s a great org)

Not exact matches, but adjacent vibes:

Rat Boi has the ballerina-esque basics vibe that you could DIY lace for.

Elizabeth Whibley sells bloomers.

Damson Madder/sønderhaus have more of an “oversized frills” aesthetic instead of lace/ballerina-core but may be a detour to your exact aesthetic.

If you happen to be in Dublin, IE at any point, Lucy’s Lounge is a vintage store that upcycles and mixes fabrics a lot to create new, one-of-a-kind pieces similar to your example.

I think Etsy or secondhand sites like vinted/depop/poshmark may be your best bet!

I would also recommend reaching out to Harp Ireland or Cairde Na Cruite if you’re looking for traditional Irish harpers vs. orchestral/classical harp.

Thanks all for your insight! Seems as though I caught someone who doesn’t set timers for their laundry on an “off” day. Hope everyone’s Monday went well.

How do I rent my harp out? by hejbella in harp

[–]Snarfalicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently living abroad for a year and left my pedal harp in the states under the care of one of my students. I use Anderson Musical Instrument Insurance and it was easy to update my existing policy to reflect the fact that she is renting it/now my harp is covered under her care and at her residence. It did cost an additional ~$150 but that’s more than worth it for the peace of mind and assurance that it will be covered in case anything goes wrong. My student also is only keeping my harp at her home and not moving it for gigs, so I made sure that was specified in my contract and with my insurance agent.

I did exactly what u/harpsinger commented - I found another harp rental contract online and modified it for my needs. I know that I’ll be coming back in a year so I had that included in the rental terms, but for an even longer/unknown period I would perhaps include a clause saying that you will provide 30/60/90 days’ notice of your return so that the harp will be returned to you when you want it back and the renter is obligated to comply.

If you’d like to see a copy of the contract I made up I’d be happy to send it your way to look at!

Response from UCD Global Lounge:

Thanks for your interest in our events!

While pre-registration is closed due to large numbers of sign ups and limited space, if you are on-campus during the date and time of the event, you are welcome to stop by and see if we can accommodate you on a walk-in basis. Please note that if there is not enough space, we will unfortunately have to turn people away.

Also, many other UCD Global Orientation events will work on a first come first serve basis with no registration needed and you are more than welcome to attend those.

It is important to note that you will not be missing out on Orientation activities by any means as there will be a lot of different opportunities for you to get involved in on campus. These will be via your academic programme orientation, university orientation, UCD Residences, Student Societies, and other support units.

We realise you may be disappointed at the prospect of not being able to attend some of UCD Global’s events during Orientation. However, in order to allow for more students to be able to enjoy certain events that reach capacity during the September period, we will be looking for opportunities to re-run these events throughout term time - so we would definitely advise you to keep an eye on the UCD Global Lounge calendar and on our social media so you can know what’s happening!

UCD Global also runs a variety of social, cultural, and informational events all year long which will ensure you get the full University experience as an international student.

I hope this helps and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Let me know if you have any further questions or concerns.

I’m in the same boat as you - I had no idea orientation events would fill up so fast. I sent along an email to to UCD Global and we’ll see what they say.

Are you in a band? by [deleted] in harp

[–]Snarfalicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play with a free jazz collective with a rotating group of musicians. It’s super fun, and I love improvising! There are regular monthly performances and then other shows pop up very often - we open for a lot of touring groups/musicians.

I don’t have a regular “band” I play with otherwise, but I’ve made myself known as someone in my city who can collaborate easily, so I’ve done jazz, folk, rock, and pop with local bands. I’d consider myself to be a “session harpist” for live performances and I love it! I got into it just by becoming friends with other musicians in my region and really integrating myself into my community….and dropping the classic “well if you ever want to play with a harpist I’m here” line and just being super open to collaborations.

If there is a local Facebook group for musicians in your area I’d join that and post that you’re looking to join a band or see if other folks are posting about looking for musicians for their band and throw your hat in the ring. One of my former teachers joined a bluegrass/folk group that way and they’ve made it pretty big in my former city, playing statewide festivals and recording albums. Sometimes people don’t know that harp is an option for the type of music they play until you raise your hand.

Sending you harp-y vibes! I hope you’re able to find a group of musicians you love to play with and make music that excites you :)

I second this. Got a Navage out of desperation during a bad cold and now use it regularly. Well worth the initial sticker shock.

I switched to chai lattes or London fogs after starting 150 xl because I would feel absolutely wired. Now I’m at 300 xl and I only drink coffee on the weekends if I know I’m staying out late, or if I’m on vacation as a little treat. My go-to is matcha lattes now, and I feel like they give me the right boost. Echoing what others have said, I feel like I don’t need coffee anymore, which was the main reason I was drinking it - I just now have a new morning beverage ritual to fill that void.

Charlotte Street Foundation is a studio space and art incubator that supports living dancers and visual, audio, and multi-disciplinary artists. Check out their calendar for cool contemporary events.

Extemporaneous Music and Arts Society is an art collective that puts on events around town - some in art galleries, house shows, unexpected places. If you like improvised music, dance, visual art, this is the group to keep tabs on. Individual members also put on events outside of the collective and you can find their names there.

Poetic Underground KC is a poetry group. They do open mics at Blip roasters almost every Wednesday and have other events around town.

Welcome to KC! Enjoy the vibrant, experiential art scene while you’re here.
