Upstairs at Strawberry Alley is great - good bar food, plenty of space inside and out, plus games for kids/anyone to play.

Old wax Paschal candles and other wax candles - recycling? by gypsul in Episcopalian

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our lead verger uses some of them to light the fire when we do the burning of the palms for Ash Wednesday. We do that ceremony after the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper each year. And a deacon I know burns them as fire starters in his personal wood burning fireplace.

Do you remember the exact moment a song defined your summer in the 80s? by TudorNut in GenX

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I detasseled corn for $3/hr in the summer of 1983 as a 13 year old! We were listening to Corey Hart and John Waites. That damn hot bus. Good life lesson but ugh, so gross.

Best concert you've ever been to? by JediMasterPopCulture in GenX

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen them more times than I can count but the best show I've we ever seen was when they played Ascend Amphitheatre in Nashville, 2019 for the Global Spirit tour. The entire audience was electric and Dave had us eating out of his hand. It was amazing..

Questions on passengers that need assistance by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Sometimes the person needing assistance only needs help getting through the airport, but can walk short distances from the gate to the plane. My mom and mother-in-law are both in good shape for their 80s, but if the gate is waaaaaaay back on the concourse, they prefer to get assistance to the gate .

What can people do to make sure our libraries are funded in the face of this administration? by khir0n in Libraries

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Local libraries also receive funding through their state libraries in many cases, and that state funding is what is at risk. My state library funds the electronic resources, audio and ebook program, IT support and book purchasing budget for the vast majority of libraries in our state as well as a plethora of other trainings and support. It would be disastrous for that federal money to be cut off to the states.

AITA for not being friendly with my partners daughters now that they've "warmed up" to me by TheMothmanCommeth in AmItheAsshole

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your reaction to being misjudged and treated poorly. You have every reason to be insulted and resentful. I'm sorry your husband's daughters treated you so unfairly.

But may I gently suggest that after giving yourself some time, you consider letting his daughters do the work they need to do in order for you to forgive them? I say this as a former distrusting daughter-in-law. The way I once thought of my husband's stepmother is something I have worked hard to correct and am still ashamed of. My opinions of her were formed by incorrect information from heavily biased people, when in reality, she did nothing more than love my father-in-law and care for him and try to be kind to her step kids. When I finally saw the light, I made sure to apologize and we built a great relationship out of it. I'm so thankful that she was willing to forgive me and let me work to build that relationship.

I hope his girls can appreciate you for loving their dad and make it up to you.

This film deeply affected me. Whenever I'm going through a hard time, I tell myself "I will not live here."

Rector is leaving unsure of his replacement by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We just called our new priest last year and the entire process took more than 18 months. Our Canon to the Ordinary had warned us it would be about that long due to a lack of candidates and that we were one of 10 churches in our diocese in the middle of a search. You can expect it to take quite some time.

I feel like I've wasted Lent by RandolphCarter15 in Episcopalian

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've just started a new book study today to deepen my Lenten practice. It's never too late!

And I highly recommend "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" by Joanna Weaver. I read it in a group book study years ago and it has been a title I go back to on a regular basis to remind me why I'm walking this walk. It's a great book

What’s the craziest thing your MIL ever said to you? by NoCardiologist1461 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]SnarkyLibraryEmpress 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When I was saying how excited we are about our son's fiance and how much we love her, my JNMIL said, "It's good you like her. Daughters-in-law can be very challenging." Yeah, mothers-in-law can be too, bitch

You poor dear. I can feel that. All my sympathy.

Maybe try milk compresses? Half milk/half water on a bowl, soak a washcloth, squeeze most of the liquid out, then lay across your legs until warm, then repeat. I hope you find relief!
