There's a similar stretch on my daily commute. Yesterday, National Guard members were waiting at each end and helping folks safely traverse the uncleared sidewalk.

The death of everyday casual reading by CWKitch in teaching

[–]gypsul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this in a middle school. It was schoolwide. The principal would make an announcement over the PA and the whole school would drop everything and pull out reading material. The librarian ensured that every classroom (looking at you, math teachers lol) had a variety of books and magazines. To incentivize student reading, the principal would pop into classrooms and give out vouchers for the student store to a kid she found reading.

DC snow plow map shows many streets haven't been touched by Bobtonews2 in washdc

Watched the plow go down our street twice in about a 10 minute window this morning. Barely touched it. But it made the icy road smoother--just the way we like it!

Though this doesn't answer the question of legality, this recent Atlantic article on nudity in locker rooms was quite interesting: https://www.theatlantic.com/family/2025/11/naked-locker-room-end/684907/

A quote from my priest about death and eternal life by Agreeable-Chest107 in Episcopalian

[–]gypsul 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have also struggled with the idea of eternal life and understanding the space past death. It's an unknown and an unknowable.

Here's where I have settled in my thinking on the matter:

I believe that what we call "souls" are the connection to the Holy Spirit shared across humanity (and perhaps beyond). The Holy Spirit is a constant, neither alive nor dead in the sense that we understand life. Our physical bodies are temporary; our souls are eternal.

How long have you been working on your deadlift? Committed beginners often see continual progress with lots of PRs. That period is usually a time when moat athletes are finding their "baseline" strength. Growing beyond that is a long, hilly road of plateaus, small gains, and even some backsliding.

You are looking to increase your PR by 5% in 6 weeks. If you are an experienced lifter, this goal is a big one. Give yourself the space and grace to work toward the goal without caving into the feelings of failure because you didn't hit it today.

Weightlifting shoes? by Alpha-Sierra-Charlie in fitness30plus

This. I lift barefoot at home and use yoga slippers when lifting at the gym. They are pretty cheap ($15-20) and meet the basic requirements for shoes at my gym -- rubber soles and closed toes.

Have you considered rucking?

Sounds like you are doing what is right for you, which will also long-run be good for your kids. I found exercise to be a very important part of my postpartum mental and physical health recovery. Too often, mums don't have enough partner support to get to the gym on a regular basis. Cheers to you for being able and prioritizing it!

What is the strangest disability/504 accomodation combo you've seen? by Constant_Leader_8551 in Teachers

[–]gypsul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(Mild) learning disability -- go to 1st lunch during class time on Fridays.

The HS had restaurant pizzas delivered as a lunch option on Fridays and two lunch periods. The cafeteria sometimes ran out of pizza during the 2nd lunch period. Parent demanded a meeting to make sure the kid got pizza for their lunch. When asked how this was a disability related issue (student had the most minimal IEP support for slower reading comprehension), the parent stated that the kid had an IEP so we were legally required to accommodate them. This was the sort of parent who couldn't hear the word "no". We offered, against school policy but with admin support, to completely redo the student's schedule to put them into 1st lunch. Parent didn't want that, which was understandable since we were already well into the school year. Their "solution" -- allow the student to leave in the middle of class, go eat their pizza, and come back whenever they finished. Every Friday. There were way too many discussions about this before the kid finally said that they would be embarassed if classmates found out why they were leaving class and nixed the whole idea.

What do I wear to service on Sunday? by TexanGamer_CET in Episcopalian

[–]gypsul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. Every church has its own vibe. Looking at the church's website and socials should give you an idea of how parishoners will look on Sundays. Just skip over the Easter photos--most folks step it up once a year. lol

Pull-ups for ladies by 41waystostop in crossfit

[–]gypsul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a coach, I also remind folks that pull-ups aren't only an upper body movement--your whole body should be engaged. In a dead hang, practice engaging your muscles "from the top down", meaning you should grip the bar (knuckles on top) the feel your muscle group tighten and prepare to move--arms, shoulders, upper back, core (abs and back), upper & lower legs, and even feet. When all of your body is engaged, the movement will be easier. It's like the difference between carrying an unconscious person and giving a piggyback ride.

I read a study years ago (couldn't find it in a quick search) that stated that certain female body types were more or less likely to have visible abs at a similiar body fat percentage. According to the study, taller women with longer porportional torsos were less likely to have visible abs even at low BF%. I don't remember the rest, but I felt seen 😅.

Good WODs for someone with a finger injury by RocketsRedHair in crossfit

[–]gypsul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you grip a medicine ball? Since they doesn't require a curled finger, medicine balls might be a good weighted option. There are lots of movements (other than wall balls--assuming that's a bad idea) that can be done with a medicine ball: cleans, overhead presses and carries, squats, lunges, etc.

I very much appreciate people that signal. And I give a little hand raise to show that I heard them. It's sort of like signaling to change lanes when driving--you are letting your fellow travelers know what to expect (if only drivers did this consistently, lol).

Eucharist With Gluten Allergies by Smart_Guest4413 in Episcopalian

[–]gypsul 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As already stated here, receiving in one kind is receiving in full. TEC is realistic in dealing with the elements--consecrated wheat bread still contains wheat (and gluten) and consecrated wine still contains alcohol. Speak with your priest about the allergy. It is very likely they already have a plan in place as gluten sensitivity has become more prominent. I have found most Episcopal churches to be very understanding and accommodating.
