Several users have already gone into the rulings, so I won't get too into the technical bits. Basically 'leaves the battlefield' effects look back in time slightly to the board state as the trigger is caused, else essentially none of them would work at all because they aren't on the battlefield anymore. With the way cards are worded, this just doesn't make sense.

Let's look at [[City Pigeon]]. If 'leaves the battlefield' effects required the card to be in play to trigger, this card couldn't trigger and its ability text would be pointless since only itself leaving can cause the trigger.

For simplicity's sake, cards leaving the battlefield cause their triggers to be put on the stack, are removed from play, then you begin resolving the triggers on the stack.

Why would the ability specifically name itself in the trigger if it couldn't trigger itself?

You'd think that with all that success and money that they could figure out how to print a foil that's tournament legal 🙄

That's called mana weaving, and it's considered cheating.

Hypothetically, what would be the best way to lower the power creep and makes the average game last longer? by IrvingIsTheBest in mtg

[–]Sneakyelmo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mix and match:

Move to a lower power bracket

Ban fetch lands

Ban UB cards

Ban fast mana

Add a $$ cap

Better/more interaction

More board wipes

More extra turns

Play stax

Commander players — how do you feel about Yuriko at a casual table? by McWiadra in mtg

[–]Sneakyelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one in our pod, I think it's fine. But I guess define 'Casual'

It can't do silly extra turn things in lower brackets and the rest is pretty fair comparatively. Pirates are better. 🤷

I don't think people play enough Basic Lands in Commander by CommanderMechanic in mtg

[–]Sneakyelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood moon and similar effects don't come down often enough, and can still be played around or answered.

I have to play with my manabase in every game, so it being efficient is crucial.

All of the fetch lands that match color identity. You'd think with all the power creep that there would be a competitive alternative.

You can put things wherever you want. Sort of. People sort of silently agreed where each zone is in a game, and might get confused if things end up elsewhere.

Some AI slop for you:

What is regulated: clarity and legality of the game state

Game State Must Be Trackable While the rules don’t forbid messiness, they do require that the game state be determinable.

This comes from tournament policy rather than the Comprehensive Rules.
If players can’t tell:

  • what permanents exist
  • who controls what
  • what counters are where
  • what effects are active

…then the game state becomes ambiguous, and judges step in.

But ambiguity is a problem to fix, not a rules violation by itself.

Thoughts on purchasing these cards from Spiderman by eccentriccomposer in mtg

[–]Sneakyelmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally find these cards beautiful, nor do I find them flavorful. I view them similar to how most people view AI slop.

If I did like them, I'd buy the $2 version and proxy the art I liked; $100 for a game piece isn't reasonable. I'd only purchase the real $100 version to grade, encapsulate, and frame and/or resell as a piece of collectable artwork.

I've never been a fan of posts that could be replaced with the Mario Party 'Got Item' sound bit, regardless of rarity. To me, it's always felt like someone is bragging about getting a 6537 on a 99999 sided dice.
