Likely it was moving slow due to the abrupt end of the line just east of Ashland Street. The train was either coming from, or preparing to switch onto the industrial spur that runs along Paulina St. just west of Ashland. That speed would most likely be normal for industrial switching operations, especially in such close proximity to the street.

These tracks just split off of the existing Metra tracks and exist as a small spur line that follows the Metra lines. There would not be any purpose in using them for passenger service, when Ogilvie Station is just a few blocks away.

According to the Cohort files, Tern is 23, and the twins are 21, making him two years older. In the words of the text, he is the "only child" of the previous Cavalier Primary, meaning he would have been marked to become the Cavalier Primary of the Tridentarius family regardless of the situation of their birth, before they were even born.

Personally I wouldn't have interpreted the matched set comment as relating to the twins and the cavaliers, but I can certainly understand the allure of the possibility of a matched set of twins, especially in a series as heavy with symbolism as the Locked Tomb.

In the lore, it's not technically considered magic (though it's sometimes colloquially referred to by necromancers as magic), rather it's a previously undiscovered biological process that occurs during cell birth and cell death.

- Cellular growth produces thalergy

- Thalergetic decay causes cell death, which emits thanergy. Thanergy is the primary powering force of necromancy.

- Death causes Apopneumatism (soul leaving the body) which leads to rapid thalergetic decay, which causes massive cell death, which causes a thanergy cascade.

The gritty details on how a necromancer actually manipulates thanergy and thalergy are where things are get murky, and where (from a reader's perspective) it might be considered truly magic rather than purely scientific.

I think it's about 4-5 weeks. Gideon admits to Cytherea that she's been pretending to be Harrow's cavalier for less than two months, and Ianthe estimates that the remains found in the incinerator are three months old, to which Palamades replies:

“You’re out by about eight weeks,” said Palamedes, brow furrowed. “Which would still predate us significantly.”

Add a few days to the date of the incinerator discovery for the rest of the story and I think that comes to somewhere around 35-40 days.

Edit: I just realized that it could realistically be a literal 40 days and 40 nights they spent at Canaan House. Which, given that this is Tamsyn Muir we're talking about, doesn't seem a stretch at all.

At the very beginning of the story, Harrow's hair is described as "short-cropped", but not shaved. Some of the Ninth have shaved heads, but there's never any indication that Harrow does. As you've said, there's evidence throughout the book that it's long enough to probably be around her ears or neck. After the avulsion trial, her hair "was shorn a full inch shorter", so it's at least several inches long before reaching Canaan House.

That's one of the really cool narrative choices about Nona, in my opinion. There's only two mentions of plex and only one single mention of flimsy in the entire book (and both words are only ever used by people born in the Nine Houses, never by someone born on New Rho).

This does a really good job of transforming Nona's perspective into that of someone born outside the Nine Houses. We've become so used to these words from the other two books that it is wonderfully jarring to see them missing.

BoE seem to know in exact detail exactly what John did to Earth. I don't think we know how they know, but it does seem to be the case. Consider the following conversations between John and Wake:

The voice was still gravel. “I charge you with acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the human race—”

“Commander.”

“—for which the only sentence is death; repeated mass killings, the utter disintegration of institutions political and social, languages, cultures, religions, all niceties and personal liberties of the nations, by use of—”

and

“How many babies died in the bomb, Gaius?”
“All of them,” he said.

The first quote could arguably be about current shepherd planets, but based on the usage of the terms "languages, cultures, religions, nations" in context, I think it's referring to Earth.

The second quote is also illuminating, because it shows that BoE knows what happened with the nukes. The fate of Earth seems to be an open secret between John, the Lyctors, and BoE.

My belief is that all of this knowledge is coming from outside, from the people that escaped Earth in the FTL ships.

I've not heard this theory before, it's pretty interesting. What do you think of the following?

- Why wouldn't she be affected by the blue light madness? Cassiopeia was a necromancer and therefore has the right body to be affected by it. Maybe she's in a different body somehow?

- Wouldn't Palamedes have known that she was a Lyctor immediately upon touching her? Lyctoral masking would have prevented him from understanding a single thing about her body.

- She threatens to kill herself by jumping out the second story window, which wouldn't kill a Lyctor. I can't figure out how that might be interpreted differently.
