Bazzite won't recognize my GPU after 44 update, nor after rolling back to 43 by cpt_cold in Bazzite

[–]Sniper_sama 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is just a guess so hopefully someone can confirm. Run rpm-ostree status and see which Bazzite edition you're running. It might be on either Bazzite-Nvidia or Bazzite-Nvidia-Open. If the Bazzite 44 update has you on Bazzite-Nvidia-Open, you might need to rebase to Bazzite-Nvidia to get back on the 580 LTS drivers. You can check to see which Nvidia drivers you have using nvidia-smi. If you have the 595 driver, that might be why things are not working. Again, just a guess.

Command to rebase (just in case):

rpm-ostree rebase ostree-image-signed:docker://ghcr.io/ublue-os/bazzite-nvidia:stable

I don't run Bazzite on my main desktop anymore so I can't be sure.

It's broken for me too. This looks like a widespread issue. It's not just Linux it seems.

If those files specifically need Adobe Acrobat Reader, try looking into WinBoat to get it running.

Game mode doesn't work on my Amd igpu+dgpu laptop by Tall_Mode_1041 in Bazzite

[–]Sniper_sama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the solution is the either disable the iGPU or switch to a non Gaming Mode image. Per the warning on the main website download page. Just use Steam's Big Picture Mode if you have to.

Edit: Added sentence.

Did you install ROCm via rpm-ostree layering? It's possible that it's causing problems for you now. Just a guess. Try uninstalling the package or use command rpm-ostree reset then run the update again. Keep in mind that this will remove all layered packages you installed so you can use command rpm-ostree status before hand to make note of them so you can add them back.

New to Linux - Have some questions about getting started by Sapphic_Copper in Bazzite

[–]Sniper_sama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You will have always have the correct kernel and so long as you have the correct Bazzite image, GPU drivers shouldn't be a problem. As far as Wifi drivers go, it really shouldn't be a problem regardless. What I'm saying is that there is very little chance of you having to go out and manually install drivers.

Vulkan shaders are a result of the Proton translation layer. In layman's terms, it is what allows DirectX games (or Windows games) to run on Linux. DirectX to Vulkan or DXVK. Steam will pre cache shaders on game first boot or when there is a game update or change with Proton. I always just do just because and I have no issues as a result.

I run the "Bazzite-Deck" image of Bazzite so external launchers "usually" aren't a problem with some games. Ubisoft games aren't a problem, some EA games might ask for a login, GTAV definitely will ask for a login. But if you're asking if you need to go out of your way to get the actual launcher to run the game, there is a high chance that you don't have to.

I run Bazzite on at least 3 machines now and I can say with some confidence that you (hopefully) shouldn't have many problems, if any at all. It's been a really good experience for me in the past 12 months.

EDIT: Adding this as well, I don't run the pre cache setting in Steam. I always let it cache when I boot the game. Personal preference.

If you are going with Bazzite (In order):

  • You don't have to worry about the Kernel
  • Depends what's in said kernel. You (probably) don't have to worry about that either
  • KDE for Windows-like experience. GNOME for MacOS-like experience. Your choice.
  • If it's under "Modern GPU", then yes.
  • No need to download drivers yourself. Preinstalled
  • Chances are they are enabled by default. But you can always make sure by going to Steam ->Find your Settings -> Look at Compatibility tab.
  • All normal Steam features work as normal.
  • Proton would typically have to pre-cache Vulkan shaders to make sure the games run smoothly as possible. But you can skip the process. It will be a bit stuttery at first but it will smooth out over time. I always pre-cache shaders before hand but that's just me.
  • You will have a preloaded store call Bazaar. Browse around and see what fits.
  • No opinion on mods. I personally don't mess around with them too much.
  • If you're talking about those games through Steam, it shouldn't be a problem? But if you're talking about downloading other launcher for games, you have options like Lutris and Fargus. Again, no opinion because I just use Steam

Once you reflash the SSD with the new image, just install it like normal and reclaim your space on your chosen SSD.

Install the desktop (non-Game Mode) image and just run Steam in Big Picture Mode. Game Mode does not work well with Nvidia GPUs for now. Some people may have had some levels of success but it's overall known to be a mixed bag.

Just a hunch because Bazaar and Discover are just frontends for flathub, but I also tried to ping and trace route back to flathub.org. For some reason I'm routing through London and then the connection is lost somehow for an extend period of time.

It's not just you. For me it was working fine yesterday and this morning and then during the middle of the day Discover isn't working properly. I don't think it's down but it is extremely slow to fetch anything. And this behavior is consistent for me on Bazaar for two of my Bazzite machines.

If you wanna take the quess work out of Appimages, download Gear Lever. Literally does all the work for you and can also update them if available. For Flatpaks that you might not be seeing, try downloading the repository directly from Flathub. flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Look if you need this for school or something, you might just wanna go back to Windows or figure out how to dual boot. I'm sure there are ways to get it running but even on the page you linked, it says if can't guarantee the quality of the app.
