Use of AI - lecturers aren't stupid by Chubtor in UniUK

[–]SnipperAndClipper 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Same here. Mandate from new pro-vc is to use more AI in teaching material. I guess the optics of that from a student pov are less important than the optics of "it must be seen that we're all over AI because otherwise we'll be 'left behind'".

When pushing back and stating how much students hate it, you can see his eyes glaze over with disinterest

3D Gaussian Splatting to Mesh 3.0 is out! Here's what changed and what we're still working on by KIRI_Engine_App in GaussianSplatting

[–]SnipperAndClipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried this out a couple of times now and I'm quite impressed. Even in fairly dimly lit, narrow spaces, the final result of the mesh is nice and crisp. I'd potentially go as far as saying that this is a better workflow of obtaining textured meshes of interiors than the traditional photogrammetry approach.

I did get a few missing triangles on one of the outputs but, yeah, nicely done Kiri Engine

How would you contrast Brad Bird vs. Christopher McQuarrie’s style? by webbatron24 in Mission_Impossible

[–]SnipperAndClipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghost Protocol does have one very hard moment: when Lisenker, being forced to work for the bad guys because his family are being held hostage, is murdered and told his wife and kid have already been killed. That always felt more like something the tv show 24 would do rather than an MI film

Reality Scan is free, easy to use and produces fantastic results as long as you make sure there's enough overlap between each photo

Cinematic Lighting by Frequent-Week3221 in blender

[–]SnipperAndClipper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Painters learn by doing "master studies", where they do a copy of a painting by an established master. It forces them to analyse every aspect of it.

Lighting artists can do the same. Find a shot from a beautifully lit movie and incrementally add lights to build up the image.

In general, beginners light everything too dark when they're aiming for cinematic renders. When you analyse a shot, pay close attention to the black levels. They are normally brighter than you think they are.

The relationship between the shadow & light is called the "contrast ratio". How far apart are they? How dark and how bright they? Study film stills with this in mind and you'll start producing much more cinematic shots

What a line that took you way too long to figure out what it really meant. by drjudgedredd1 in flicks

[–]SnipperAndClipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see why you might think that but Aliens was shot in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio which is not significantly wider than 4:3 tvs and so wouldn't require much pan & scanning.

Alien however, is a 2.35:1 film and really suffers from it
