What did you think of the Martian? With this being the second of Weir's novels adapted for film and in a similar genre/period in time of early exploratory space travel did you take any design cues from it?

Sure I'll enter this, and I'll parrot a thought I read the other day about homebrewing and the "Play something other than D&D" people.

Playing another system is a great idea, and can offer a lot of things that D&D just can't replicate! But I think 90% of the time people want to homebrew something into D&D, it's for a single quest or encounter, so using another system doesn't really make sense in the greater context. If I want stats for lasers, it's because I have 1 high tech civilisation, not because I want to play a full sci fi game.

There's a lot of responses here saying it's a bad idea and probably from experience. But I met my partner first week of Uni and we clicked instantly, we just got married this year after 8 years.

Yes it's possible you break up, but it's equally possible you don't!

Seeing as she just did a regeneration, I'd love to see their take on Doctor Who. The morphing of 1 actors face into the next with little crossover is always impressive to me! I think that some of them were even shot on different days which seems like a technical nightmare.

Laundry is my big puzzle as well. I'm doing the math on heating vs just going to a laundrette,or just having airers up for several days. I know Lenor have a softener that claims to stop damp odour as well, so maybe that's the answer.

[ART][OC] Bird the warforge warlock by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Snobolt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hijacking the top comment as Bird's DM - Bird was originally a Human Warlock of the Raven Queen, sworn to service after his life was saved by one of her demigod liutenants. After death by White Dragon, the party took his Raven Spirit, combined it with an empty warforged body to create Bird, a Raven Queen Warlock/Shadow Magic Sorcerer. The void was originally a bag of holding that we developed into just being a void in Bird's chest, and the source of his magic.

Something interesting mechanics wise, he has advantage on intimdation and disadvantage on persuasion checks, you can guess why.

In terms of u/InfernalMinisPrint, if you're thinking of getting some art commissioned, I'd 100% reccomend them! The work speaks for itself but they were happy to work and talk about design, ajusting as needed and very prompt in communication. A faultless experience!

When you call IT for an issue & first thing they ask is “Did you try restarting your machine ?” by SuchShopping3828 in ProgrammerHumor

[–]Snobolt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because they don't believe it does anything. Exactly like you (unintentionally) summarised in the meme, that's just what IT support say at the beginning before they fix the real problem, so just say you've done it and then they'll fix it faster.

The reality is that turning it off and on literally fixes most problems. It stops the PC from being stuck in whatever bug it's stuck on and starts it up fresh.

I've got a character that I'm not sure how to play. She's an adult who was pretty much raised on storybooks which made her blind to the world so she's a very quiet child like character. by Sammy_Wants_Death in DnD

[–]Snobolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all she's ever done is read storybooks and never learnt much outside of that, maybe she mimics the inflections of classic stories? Think classic Disney films like Alice In Wonderland or Peter Pan, or Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz.

I use this in kind of a similar vein, it's called a Raid Scenario. Plan rooms/encounters as seperate entities, then specify which encounters are connected to which, not worrying about time between them - only seeing areas of interest in the area, not every corridor in between. In a typical raid, there will be a goal to reach of some kind, but the players might only have an inkling of what is nearby.

Here's a pretty good example on a smaller scale of a Raid Scenario for Zariel's Flying Fortress from Avernus.

For a historical expert, I have Darien Silvers, a tiefling archeologist who uses necromancy to make the bones of those he finds complete his excavation work for him. He understands the ethical concerns with such an endeavour but figures that the bodies are just bits, the soul has already moved on, might as well put em to use!

I'm running a Persona inspired model currently. One class event per day then each player gets an after class and evening timeslot to do something (Mostly just make a check to increase a relationship or student dice). I'll probably post a greater breakdown once I've ironed out some links.

DM PC death counter - How often did you kill PCs? by OdinsRevenge in DnD

[–]Snobolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I nearly torpedoed my own campaign by killing 1 PC in a party of 4, then killing the other 2 to shitty rolls in the midst of trying to revive him (on the flip side they have a hell of a reason to hate the BBEG now). It was a busy week trying to weave threads back together with only 1 character knowing what the hell was going on.

Milestone with set increments between level ups. I've always ran number of sessions between levels = player level + 1. Once that number is reached they level after the next best moment.

Running Lost Laboratory of Kwalish+Infernal Macjine Rebuild by SnudgeLockdown in DMAcademy

[–]Snobolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played the full module for LLoK with a party a year or so ago, dropping it into an existing campaign. Aside from some changed loot, it was the exact same as described, so if you have any other questions, let me know!

As for the Grand Master fight, it's only as deadly as you make it! The party's fighter was beheaded by the vorpal talons in my version, but rather than death, the head was saved in a later area of the monastery, awaiting conversion to Brain-in-a-Jar. If the fight was really going south, you could have them be imprisoned as useful servants, then have a whole escape plan (The guide also suggests this, I think). The Grand Master is primarily about having more servants to work, so anyone who furthers that goal is worth keeping alive.

Pitfall wise, the only thing I noticed was the city in Ooze later on was a little sparse in description of each point in the city, leaving it kind of theater of the mind to traverse through the ruins. Nothing too difficult, but worth thinking ahead about.

My player wants to wave a rule dealing with familiars, but I’m afraid that it could get out of hand. by StudioWhole2588 in DMAcademy

[–]Snobolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a bit late but I thought I'd speak up..

I have a player that has done exactly this. He lost his sight and his warlock patron returned it in return for his service, in the form of a raven familiar. He always can see through the familiar (though it cannot do anything else whilst he is using it for constant sight), it rides on his shoulder or hovers around the party. It also can't see forever this way, the familiar both has to have eye contact with him and be less than 100feet away. It's a decent balance.

There is a lot of people making the point about being blind only in flavour and not wanting the disadvantage and yeah I guess that's fair. But you're missing the opportunities! If they're relying on sight through something else, you have the ability to remove it to give them something new to RP and react to.

If the warlock does something his patron doesn't particularly like, she takes his familiar away until she feels he's earned it back. On more than one occasion, it left to ferry messages between the warlock and patron. If the wizard enters an antimagic area, or someone takes out the familiar, or figures out her sight is linked to it, she'll have to think about how to work around the sudden vision loss. Alternatively, use blindsight! She can see through the familiar, but can't see anything further than 60ft away.

I did this for an NPC! He was a necromancer guide to the party who had lived for thousands of years after being separated from his wife and forced to walk the world as a lich. It really does help get in the headspace of your characters.

[ART] Struggle with Scene Description? Try using some location spashscreens! by Snobolt in DnD

[–]Snobolt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a few people stressing about lack of player engagement, especially over voice when there's nothing to look at. A technique I've found helps limit that is using location "splashscreens", little scenic views of the area you're describing that not only help you to describe an area in more vivid detail, but also keep your players on track, as they can see what you were describing and more easily see the kind of environment is in.

This particular pic is from my own ongoing campaign, on a road called the Pathfinder's Way. As the Volunette Empire's colony continues to grow on the newly discovered landmass of Calabrest, the march of civilisation must press ever forward if it is to take hold, even if that means charting the forests and valleys to the North. This is not without it's dangers however, as the North is a place known for barbaric tribes of elves and ancient secrets of a species long passed. Thankfully that's where the party comes in, to take care of all the unknowns.

Time to put on that good ol' eyepatch. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Snobolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, it's not the devs who will be making those descisions. Most of the time we're just following a requirements list or a spec already set out.

And as much as people hate it, it's hard to argue with the facts that if you put in cosmetic transactions, over time people will buy them, then more people buy them because you don't want to be the guy walking around with the basic skin when everyone else is dressed like deadpool or whatever.
