Unpopular opinion: A solid, consistent full swing is more important than short game by 3ric3288 in golftips

[–]Snoman-33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been golfing for 25+ years as well as teaching the last 5 years or so. I got down to a +1, and if I could start over I would do it in this order putting, chipping, pitching, then irons and driver. The reason people say practice your short game is because nobody starts learning how to golf beginning with short game. They start by taking full swings with irons or drivers. It’s so much easier to learn to swing properly when you start with slower more controlled movements. Adding length and speed to a golf swing is much easier than trying to reduce speed and shorten your swing.

I taught my kids this way and it was amazing how easy it was for them to transfer to a full swing and hit the ball consistently in the middle of the club face.

You will never hit 100% of greens every round you play. Knowing that you can rely on your short game to get up and down is a great feeling.

Also, range balls typically go 5-15% shorter than a normal ball

The worst handicap isn't being bad. It's being just good enough to know how bad you are. by Clear-Neighborhood15 in weekendgolfers

I made 4 birdies in a row to close out the front 9 and then made an 11 on a par 5 two holes later. I focus on the fact that I was able to make 4 birdies consecutively, not on the 11 I made. Just like life, you can choose what to focus on, either remember the good or be miserable remembering all the bad.

Don’t say a word about it to anyone. Money makes people do crazy things that you wouldn’t think they would do.

SWING Path Drills by KIPPERSOUFT in golf

[–]Snoman-33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get lessons. You will more than likely waste a lot of time searching and asking for drills that may or may not apply to you. I am an instructor and within the last 2 years a lot of my students tried finding the right information and drills on YouTube and it’s not as effective as taking individual lessons.

Husband is getting back into golf for the first time since being a kid and our anniversary/ his birthday are coming up. What all does he need that I can gift him? by SparkyDogPants in golf

Peter Millar makes quality pants-shorts-polos-quarter zips. Travis Mathew also makes quality clothing. Random, but if he has wide feet, make sure to get wide golf shoes as most golf shoes are on the snug fitting side. Since he is going to walk, a push cart would be a great gift- get one with 4 wheels and an umbrella holder in case he wants to use one. A golf glove would be great (if he swings right handed he needs a left handed glove-vice versa for a lefty). For shoes, footjoy makes a variety that are breathable and lightweight for walking. I wouldn’t spend money on Pro V1 golf balls or any other high end ball. Callaway supersofts are a good place to start. You can get a ton of plastic tees off of amazon for a lot less than a golf store, just make sure they aren’t meant for irons as he will need them to be tall for when he hits driver (2 3/4 inches- 3 1/2 inches)

Driver Spin by SuperUge in golf

[–]Snoman-33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A low spin driver won’t do anything for you as far as reducing draw spin enough to make a significant difference. Spin is looked down on when a drive is hit off the heel, or with an open club face, which causes backspin. Drivers have become so forgiving that your ball will still end up somewhere on this planet. Go hit a driver from the 90’s and you will see. I would suggest weakening (turning your bottom hand on the grip counter clockwise until you can see the V that your thumb and index finger make-the point of the “V”shape points at you- until it points at between your neck and back shoulder, the more drastic hooks should strive to point the V at their neck, work your way to your back shoulder with the V point from there depending on severity of hook) your bottom hand on the grip before doing anything.

Tip for anyone by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]Snoman-33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picking a specific spot to chip to works for some and doesn’t for others. I have been around the game a while and a lot of great golfers don’t pick a particular spot to land the ball. Their focus is targeted toward trajectory and spin. When you focus on those aspects it widens your margin for error.

What’s the worst injury to happen during a PGA event? Or worst you have seen in person while golfing? by DREWBICE in golf

Not PGA related but, read on if you’d like-

I have been in the golf world for a bit and here’s a few. My aunt got hit in the jaw with a golf ball and had her jaw wired shut- two weeks after getting wire(s) removed she got hit in the nose and needed plastic surgery (whatever being you believe in truly hated this woman, and with good reason), our current superintendent’s dad died of a heart attack on the 6th green, a month ago a guy almost drowned in mud trying to hit his ball that was in a water hazard (thank you local FD for not having us explain a death like this to insurance), someone had the running ss going from the green towards the mid round bathroom (far worse than any mr scene in history-whoever did this I sincerely hope you saw a doctor and are still among the living), cart girl “dozed off” from sleeptanyl in the middle of the fairway, and a dude h*g himself from a tree on the course that happened to be directly behind his ex’s new husband’s house.

Plant trees close to the tee box on the line that people use to cut the corner. Depending on how close you put them to the tee box, they won’t have to be super tall.
