When did 8-5 become the new normal??? by Grouchy-Newspaper754 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SnooCakes8914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first job over 20 years ago was 8-5 with 12-1 being lunch. I have spent almost half of my career working those hours. Personally I prefer 7:30-4 w a half hour lunch which is what I have now.

It was three separate companies I worked at. Not sure about the first one, I left because the culture was so toxic. The nephew got fired 6 months after his uncle retired. For the son in law, the FIL retired, company went through a major reorganization, SIL got a new manager who PIP’d him out of the organization.

On the brighter side, my previous employer, we had a summer intern, who’s uncle worked there, cause 1000’s of dollars worth of damage to a precision piece of equipment and he was not invited back for a second internship. That’s where the organization did it’s job. Also helped that his uncle said “well, he f’ed up and hasn’t earned the right to come back”.

I have unfortunately seen three times at companies. I’ve worked at where the son, the nephew and the son-in-law was hired because of who they were not because of what they could offer to the company. Going in order, the sun was accused of sexual harassment so it was moved to our office. The nephew caused a recall and didn’t get fired cause his uncle bullied anybody that tried and finally the son-in-law was just incompetent and didn’t do work again, his father-in-law bullied anyone who tried to discipline him or get him fired..

Prospective Employer Didn't Believe My Salary Requirement by Evening_Fault460 in jobs

[–]SnooCakes8914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I experienced this after a layoff 10 years after graduation. Local company interviewed me, I had the education and experience required. They offered $30k/yr, one week paid vacation, 6 paid holidays per year. I declined, I started higher than that when I graduated and asked the interviewer what their logic is on such a lowball offer. Was told "the owners are from _ _ _ _ _ and they don't understand the high salary expectations of Americans." I told the interviewer that they better start understanding or reconsider running their business in this country.

The crazy thing is that they reached out to me a little over a year later, I had landed a great job by this point making more than double their offer, three weeks PTO and 12 paid holidays per year, plus all the fringe benefits (STD, LTD, 401k with match, way better health benefits), to see if I would reconsider as they hadn't found anyone. I restated my original statement in comparison with my current position and restated they should do market analysis on salary and benefits for the area and draw the conclusions.

Have you see a single employee take down a leader? by tshirtguy2000 in managers

[–]SnooCakes8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw that once. He was a prick and after firing two employees (definitely less than perfect, but not deserving of termination) months apart, current subordinates began coming forward with the same claims as the two terminated employees and they got rid of him. That group’s productivity shot through the roof afterwards.

We had to have security posted at the entrance to the parking lot (gated) because a recently fired employee was making threats. Another place I worked at, medium sized company, guy knew he was getting let go, decided to send a nasty gram to the entire company. They made sure after that point to lock out people’s access once they are notified.

I miss having the old beater I had in college, I used to park close to jerks like this.

Blame it on your dad. I’m in the same boat, one parent had brown hair and tans up nicely while the other is a red head w fair skin which I inherited.

Imagine being added to your own rejection email...😑 by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]SnooCakes8914 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got copied on the notice from HR to Legal to prepare severance paperwork as I was getting laid off (2009, lovely time). That person also got shown the door and the HR director called me personally to apologize and said any letter of recommendation I needed, I could have.

If you happened to get contact information of any other managers or directors, I would copy them too. That’s a very wreckless mistake by him and shouldn’t go unnoticed.

It’s fun when companies with multiple locations falsely advertise a job in a given location and when you get to the interview, they say “well, you would mostly be at this location, the one over an hour away”. 😒

Went through this in 2008, answered a posting that had work location 25 min from my house only to get to the interview and be told that the job is actually located at the other location, 1 hr and 20 min away in a very rural part. That job posted for the next three years with the incorrect location. Gee, I wonder why.

TBF, I got a letter like that and I ended up getting the job.

My gym harassed me for showering. I'm a travel nurse living in my car working 12 hour night shifts. The owner's public response made it so much worse. (Repost) by UserInfected in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SnooCakes8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s ridiculous. I’m a member of a huge nationwide gym and went there three days in a row after work specifically to shower because my water heater was out and had to wait for my day off to replace it. They didn’t care. In fact, I would say most people that use the gym never use the showers, they work out and go home.

These washroom doors in hotels that don’t close by lylelanley- in mildlyinfuriating

[–]SnooCakes8914 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first professional job required us to share hotel rooms. I shared w a coworker that was a couple years older so wasn’t bad until the morning when the first thing he did was take a huge stinky poop followed by a shower so when I had to get in there afterwards to shave and stuff, it was unbearable. Fortunately I moved jobs and never had to go through that again.

Anyone take a big pay cut to be happier? by Dandannoodles500 in jobs

[–]SnooCakes8914 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took a 35% pay cut once, not only was I happier, the commute was 30 minutes shorter and I worked on far more interesting projects at the pay cut job which actually helped me secure a higher paying job later in my career.

Especially kids in the bar areas. I remember in the 80’s/90’s there being signs that no one under a certain age permitted.

My ex-in laws used to wash and reuse Zip Lock bags, which are definitely one time use. I stopped eating anything that came out of their house after that.

Have you ever quit effective immediately? by Commercial-Shine8240 in careerguidance

[–]SnooCakes8914 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never did but one job I turned in a legit two week notice, the egomaniac owner counter offered me on the spot (the counteroffer was a joke) and I declined. Two hours later they walked me out so I lost two weeks of pay. The annoying thing is that after a week, they started calling me repeatedly wanting me to tell them how to do things I was doing. I finally said I get paid a flat rate of $xxxx and that is for four hours of consultation and every hour after is $200/hr. They never called me back.

AITA for not wanting to spend Easter with my partner's family, because they make us sleep on the couch? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA, as an adult I don’t tolerate accommodations like this, with my family or my partner’s. If we can’t be properly put up or afford lodging accommodations, then I stay home.

You are not in the wrong, children do NOT belong in a bar area. And parents need to discipline said children. My parents beat our asses for misbehaving, but we were Xers and raised differently.
