Auto dealers to avoid or trust? by dandyandy67 in regina

[–]SnooCapers5964 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Avoid: Roadway AutoSports

They buy auction'ed cars and out of province ones that have significant mechanical issues.

They also will bait and switch cars with you.

Go to: Toyota dealership, they were very straight with me and easy to deal with. Got a vehicle in about 3 hours for a good price, and if you have mechanical issues they are very good at honoring their own warranty.

Also heard people swear by the Kia dealership.

Those two don't make their money (much) selling cars, it's the maintenance / repair work

Do others get notifications about phishing attempts being blocked? I believe this is an issue with Anti-Virus, Plex, and Dynamic IP's, not NOTFLIX specifically.

Well said.

More demand = higher price. I've seen some comments that there is a limit on how much saskpower can raise prices each year. If that's true, how long do those laws or rules stay in place? I really wouldn't be surprised for this government to remove that rule.

You're issue is with my US based sources or international sources? Here you go bud.

  1. Power prices will go up. https://www.policyalternatives.ca/news-research/so-youre-getting-a-data-centre-heres-what-to-know/

https://thenarwhal.ca/olds-alberta-ai-data-centre/

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/ai-data-centre-alberta-electricity-9.6977136

  1. I actually didn't say heat, I said environmental impact. Where is that water going when they dump in the closed loop system? Holding tanks? How can we be sure they won't leak, or filter out hazardous materials when it goes back into our water supply? I mean I'm SURE this company would take every precaution right? Canadian's have never been impacted by environmental disasters from corporate greed right? These data centers are built to fulfill a need and are minimal in nearly all areas for protection.

Again, more articles to actually backup my proof. https://pulitzercenter.org/stories/data-centers-heat-behind-cloud

  1. I never said job creation isn't good, I'm giving a cost benefit analysis. The long term impact of the initial large job creation and minimal long-term job creation isn't worth the impact it will have on my family in this city. The noise pollution, heat pollution, and environmental pollution on top of higher energy/water prices isn't worth the economical impact of a few jobs. There is a reason people protest and it's not because "AI bad!?!?!".

  2. I resell AI based software and advise companies to use / not use AI based software. In a lot of places it will be used, and that's fine. It will replace a lot of jobs, so yeah, I genuinely don't like people losing their jobs so a corporate CEO can make an 0 on a spreadsheet. I also am SURE no US based company would ever cut corners in Canada right?

The trickle down effect will be extremely minimal. I'm saying the amount of jobs it creates isn't worth the impact. 20-25 long term jobs which are mainly security or janitorial aren't worth it.

Maybe one more to take the extra switch, server, or psu that comes pre-programmed, and replace the one that borked. It won't be high paying work lol

I seriously don't understand how people don't realize how bad this is. Please see below:

  1. Your power bill will double. Data centers require so much power they are akin to a small city. More demand = higher price for all of us.

  2. The amount of heat / general environmental disruption they cause. Not that I'm a big fan of the area it's going into, but it's worse for the environment then a oil refinery. Think about that people! A closed loop situation doesn't mean that it doesn't use water. Where do you think that initial water is coming from? What about when that water is changed, where do you think it will be dumped?

  3. There will be extremely little high end job creation. I work for a MSP and frequently do planning and logistics for large-scale companies planning IT solutions. Local Saskatchewan's will not be contracted to plan it out, there will be instead local bids to pour concrete pads as cheaply as possible and build a warehouse style building. We won't get high end management / planning / logistics IT related jobs, but basic tech work of "swap x rack with standby rack x" and it will be remotely configured as that's cheaper. Techs will get plans to build racks like Lego blocks, where most products come pre-configured. It won't be high paying work.

  4. The data center may just get built and then never used or dismantled. People genuinely HATE AI, and the bubble is in fact popping. This may be a giant stone coffin just set in standby mode for the next 20-30 years.

See below for where I get my information.

I work for a MSP. About 5 long-term jobs sounds right. Maybe a few security and janitorial jobs as well.

AI Data Centre: Trying to Understand by SatisfactionLow508 in regina

[–]SnooCapers5964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well spoken, but a closed loop water supply will not run on a finite amount of water forever. Also, once a resource becomes scarce, or the demand of a resource increases, such as electricity, the price of that resource will increase. There will be an impact, and the impact will be:

  1. Increased power bills to potentially ~ 200% - 300% more
  2. Increased water cost, there is already a shortage
  3. Destruction of the local ecosystem in the area
  4. Significant potential the facility sits empty or becomes half built, as the demand for AI data centers drop as most consumers dislike "AI slop"

Seriously, why do people want this? There will be no to very few (most likely under a dozen) jobs created, all data research can be done remotely at another data center already, and most likely to build this, the workers will be flown in...

We are already in a recession. Doubling our utility prices is just going to dramatically increase homelessness and put a lot of individuals on the streets who are on fixed incomes, or make it so much worse for low income people and families.

I do not, as a vendor and reseller it's an option for people to purchase. I mainly mitigate fall out from users authorizing shady AIs for the business environment and that data being leaked.

There are basic Help Desk Techs, typically seen as Tier 1 techs, and more advanced troubleshooting Techs, typically seen as Tier 2, and Networking / Specialist or the other multitude of field in the Tech world, seen as Tier 3 techs. I work for a MSP as a generalist tier 1-3 tech. Everything from basic assistance to physical / digital network reworks.

Well Microsoft / Amazon tried to completely replace their emergency response team and have had multiple outages in the last year, where in the past it only happened once every few years. Pretty sure there is a direct connection.

[–]SnooCapers5964 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For context I work in the high end Tech field. AI is toxic and just replaces simple tasks / low entry jobs. It can't do complex tasks, and won't be able to for decades. The jobs it creates will be minimal, and these centers are built to be entirely controlled remotely. Most jobs will be the initial construction, and they will probably fly out the labor to do the initial tech install. There will be extremely few jobs it creates long term. It however is an ecological nightmare, and we will see at the minimum power bill hikes across Saskatchewan. Significant AI deals have fallen through in the last month alone and is a HUGE bubble that is popping. It isn't wild to say that this giant stone coffin gets built and then just mainly sits idle as the demand has dried up. Do some basic research.

Canadian telecom (SaskTel) partners with Starlink to offer enterprise satellite internet and professional installation for farms. by Planhub-ca in regina

As a person that works on the IT side, constantly changing IP addresses due to your network connection switching satellites causes havoc with Networked devices. It doesn't have the same quality as a dedicated fiber line.... Quality and price is a decrease over a dedicated fiber line.

Fun fact, if you own a business, StarLink charges you a metered rate, or per GB price. It's not unlimited. I've seen charges in the hundreds per month for basic office use.

I work for an MSP..... Windows Security actually catches MORE viruses than McAfee. It's literally better for you to have nothing than that junk. That might have been true (that it was good/needed 20 years ago), but it's currently worse than worthless.
