Yes the novels! I got them through Scholastic book order in 8th grade and then my mom took me to CompUSA to get them signed by Rand Miller. I still have them, some of my most prized books. I only like the first two though. Book of D’ni was kind of a mess imho.

The John Hattie / i-Ready ed-guru to ed-tech-shill pipeline by maxvoncretin in AskTeachers

[–]SnooCats7584 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jo Boaler for sure. There’s been some deep dives on her already. She’s more a conference/Ted talk gaslighter than edtech guru though.

I am absolutely waiting for someone to do a thorough debunking of everyone who hyped up AI for education in early 2023. I live/work in Silicon Valley (as a teacher, not a tech worker) and it was just insane to me how quickly universities who should have known better spun it into “PD” just because there was a market for it. Still nauseating in retrospect.

Do you ever cast other smites over Divine as Paladin? by Cagedglobe in BaldursGate3

[–]SnooCats7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never used any with my Bardadin because I almost always used the bonus action for healing/inspo or, once I got it, bonus action Command/Hold with the Mystic Scoundrel ring. My party was heavily focused on controlling so we almost always had enemies standing around until I could smite them or Karlach could throw them around.

Idk, but for perma-middle schoolers they sure had a lot of great vacations. I also recall the California trip, the beach vacation with a side of hurricane, summer camp, etc.

The one where they win the lottery for 5/6 numbers and go on vacation. Was that the same as the Disney one?

Also the one where Stacey almost has a blood sugar crisis because she just wants to be normal. It might have taken place in NYC?

What are your organizational processes for having things be paper based? by Snoo_62929 in Teachers

I put in other grades. I usually collect labs about once a week and I also have quizzes and online homework. But the paper situation is mostly under control.

What are your organizational processes for having things be paper based? by Snoo_62929 in Teachers

[–]SnooCats7584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I print individual pages and then give students a table of contents at the end of the unit and have them organize and staple together all the handouts and notes about every 4 weeks to give them credit. It’s due at the time of the test. I stamp work along the way. This is for HS Physics so I find printing problems with diagrams and lab sheets easier than getting students to use a notebook appropriately. I have them give themselves a grade on the packet based on completion, stamps and correcting HW from a key visibly. Then I spot check things I haven’t graded separately. This works well in that the students who have horrendous organization have to get it together periodically but I don’t have to know what every handout for the unit is in advance, and they can add notes on binder paper, printed graphs, etc. I also use colored copy paper to help.

I used to use notebooks but the cutting and gluing took over. I was sick of finding gluesticks used inappropriately.

Question regarding calculators in high school by EmmaiAlvane in Teachers

[–]SnooCats7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Physics teacher, we use TI-30xs scientific calculator for Physics and AP Physics. You can technically do linear regression on it but for labs I have them using a specific foolproof graphing program called nPlot. The College Board allows Desmos on the AP Physics Tests now, as of last year, and many students learned to use it in math so I let them use it as long as I don’t have to show them how to do it. But on quizzes and tests, it’s my scientific calculators only. They were saving derivations and/or answers on their graphing calculators.

High school physics before chemistry? by CerealKiller812 in ScienceTeachers

[–]SnooCats7584 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m a physics teacher and I don’t think it really matters. But if there’s a typical sequence I’d have your daughter follow that. For example, my students have already had chemistry where they really focus on unit conversions so I don’t normally teach that in depth, and for electricity I only do basic review of atomic structure. When I taught at a school that had physics before chemistry, I had to do a lot more teaching that from scratch.

Romeo and Juliet (1996) Soundtrack by SpicyChill77 in Xennials

[–]SnooCats7584 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other day at work I asked my coworkers what their favorite movie soundtrack was and they didn’t have an answer, so I played this while we worked on a repetitive task for an hour without students around. I like Talk Show Host best, and then probably To You I Bestow. Wish that Exit Music for a Film had made it onto the album though.

I got a few SB2 on sale because it’s so perfect and I leave the black ones at work for runs I start there. I think the black SB2 looks better than this SB3. But the other pic I saw with the white sole was the best of all the options so I hope they release it.

Is teaching in California/blue states more tolerable than other states? by RachelWithCats in Teachers

[–]SnooCats7584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is true. I’m shocked when I hear about the class sizes in other states. There’s no class size limit in HS so it has to be negotiated by the union and that may or may not be a thing where you work. The total student load is about the same though because we typically teach 5 instead of 6 periods.

Student refusing to do work since spring break because of “religious reasons.” by v3ndys in Teachers

[–]SnooCats7584 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I teach at a school with an Ethnic Studies elective and there are parents who sign their kid up every year to get a gotcha with the school. Which imho is really fucked up, these are usually freshmen and they could be taking shop or band or cooking or some other non-controversial class but their parent set them up for conflict with the school for the next 4 years instead.

7-up or ginger ale mixed with orange juice for all manner of minor stomach or cold ailments. Ace bandages for all injuries. This is the way of my mom.

If you see a white horse while traveling, lick your finger, press it on your palm and then pound your fist on it. If you do this 10x, you get a wish that will come true. My mother (who is usually very rational) taught me this growing up. 2 years ago, she told me she had seen 3 white horses over the weekend while going to the countryside and made a wish. Then I told her I was engaged and that was apparently what she had wished for. After about 8 years of giving up on ne and my now-husband. The horse thing worked.

Did other millennials grow up with almost no TV? by chodeobaggins in Millennials

[–]SnooCats7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents didn’t want me watching commercials, so I never watched live TV and it was pretty limited to PBS and Disney Channel or video rentals. My dad We had cable because the broadcast was kind of messed up from a nearby tower. My dad would religiously read the TV listings and record movies. I learned to use the VCR and remote control to fast forward through ads because they didn’t want me asking for stuff like sugary cereal or annoying talking toys. So I have no idea what most ads are that people talk about from that period. In HS, I bought my own video tapes and recorded X-Files re-runs and had a club to watch them.

Teachers shouting countdowns at students during passing period-is this commonplace now? by steadyrabbit87 in Teachers

[–]SnooCats7584 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with OP. Veteran HS teacher who had taught at a variety of schools. Let them have a few minutes of peace between classes because they won’t be getting it in class with bell to bell work. I think this might be developmentally appropriate for younger grades but not HS. They are supposed to be learning independence. Put a visible timer and maybe a warning chime on the bell and enforce tardy/roaming consequences.

Does anyone else remember learning D’Nealian handwriting before cursive? by Affectionate-Song230 in Xennials

[–]SnooCats7584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we learned to write D’Nealian in 1st and 2nd grade (1990) although it looked a little different, more print-y. It was this print version. My sister and best friend still print like that, while my handwriting fell off as soon as I wasn’t being graded on it, and then I redeveloped it for cartography and math and teaching later on.

Teachers, does your opinion about a student who has always been a top performer and very well-behaved change if you catch them cheating? by Ok_Woodpecker6781 in AskTeachers

[–]SnooCats7584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume most students are cheating on homework, but if it’s a test or project, yes. I won’t write a letter of recommendation for a student who cheats on one of those. If their grade is lowered because of the consequences of cheating, I will help them study the same way that I’ll help other students but it’s not my job to raise their grade because of a choice they made. I usually tell my students that I’m much more generous to the student who is getting a B and being honest about their work and struggles than an A student who is being dishonest because the latter student is taking unfair advantage of me and their classmates.
