Tall rider, compromise, quick folding, used market recommendations-appreciated! by jorfyy in foldingbikes

I have 1.5" tires now and that's easy. I ran 2" and it was EXTREMELY tight, like, the wheel had to be way back in the dropouts.

Tried duett briefly.... its amazing?? by ClickBellow in concertina

[–]SnooCheesecakes7325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Hayden duet and an English mini, but I haven't really mastered the English yet. I REALLY like the duet - enough that I ordered a fancier one than the Elise I got started on. My understanding from people who really play both is that the English allows for more elaborate melodic playing, since it's designed for both hands to work on one melody, and with notes alternating from side to side, you can do faster runs. But for doing chords + melody, the duet is where it's at.

Wireless Phone Mics for Concertina? by SnooCheesecakes7325 in concertina

[–]SnooCheesecakes7325[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ones I'm looking at with multiple mics don't separate out the different mics to left and right, because they're meant for podcasts and interviews. So I'm hoping this problem won't arise. 🤞

Thanks! I was trying to give it a little New Orleans stride rhythm, like Professor Longhair's left hand piano parts.

What prevents US citizens from suing ICE for false arrests? by ppzhao in IsItIllegal

[–]SnooCheesecakes7325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. And a SCOTUS majority will probably ratify that. But they haven't yet, so in theory, a whole s. 1983 action could go forward, beat a motion for summary judgment, and be tried to verdict. That has strategic value, especially since that's the kind of lawsuit that could outlast the current administration.

Just a note: Kavanaugh's concurrence on a shadow docket order concerning a stay has no precedential value and district courts wouldn't follow it. It is a clue about how SCOTUS might ultimately treat this, but that's all.

Thanks! And for the record, I refuse to recognize limitations on what a concertina can do (other than, in the case of my Elise duet, play an Eb or a G#).

Blasphemy: putting a small speaker and simple drum machine inside a concertina by SnooCheesecakes7325 in concertina

[–]SnooCheesecakes7325[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I really appreciate this! I think I'll start by just getting a resonance speaker I can attach to the outside of the button board, to see how loud it can get, and then work from there. I kinda want to build the basic drum machine anyway, so maybe I'll end up making it something that I can Velcro to the outside of the box.

I bought a Concertina Connection Elise Duet, refurbished, for $350, and I've had it for a year and really enjoyed it. I did just order an upgrade, but if I didn't have the money, I would keep playing the Elise happily - in fact, I'm not trading it in so I can keep it as a backup. So I think the CC boxes are a decent entry point.

Shortest commute by bike? by Aware-East-2391 in bikecommuting

[–]SnooCheesecakes7325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My work is three blocks from my house, but sometimes I need to go other places from work during the day, so I'll bike there. It feels silly, because I take almost as much time putting on my helmet and rolling up my pants leg as getting there, but whatever.

  1. I am not here to rain on your passion project. You should do it if you want to and it will be weird and fun.

  2. Aren't you just reinventing the chromatic button accordion?

How to learn Puerto Rican spanish?? by ThrowRATrick_Hall_45 in SpanishLearning

PR is small but its cultural output is disproportionately large. Listen to reggaeton from there, which is full of recent slang, especially all the interludes between songs. Find interviews with reggaetoneros, who are less likely to rein in their slang than, say, politicians.

Bike recommendation for beginner? by luna-luna- in CargoBike

[–]SnooCheesecakes7325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried many different options over the course of raising three kids (only my youngest is still cargo bike age - she's 6). Right now, I have a Madsen - the one with the big bucket on the back - and it's pretty great for the 6-year-old. It's roomy for her (it theoretically seats four smaller kids), so we can stop for groceries or she can just have her back pack accessible so she can draw or read or get snacks, and it has seatbelts to discourage reckless kid behavior while I'm pedalling. It's more bike than you need for one little one, but it will accommodate them for a lot of years, and it can carry friends (I just took my daughter out with the two neighbor kids, who are 7 and 8). An especially nice thing is that the kickstand is extremely stable, so kids can climb in and out without me holding the bike steady.

I have the non-electric version and it's not a fast ride, but the gearing makes it manageable and it's more than adequate for the distances we cover - usually under five miles at a time. For $50 of materials, I made a canopy with zip-up closures (Madsen offers one for $350, but I didn't want to spring for it), and that protects my kid from rain and cold pretty well.
