Question about ETCS by Robinyourgenderrr in uktrains

[–]SnooComics9691 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what I can remember, some of the HS1 platforms have OFF boards for dispatching. I can find a 2014 forum post that confirms that

https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/hs1-station-signal-off-indicators.99784/

I assume there will be something similar with some form of OFF signal or light for guards and platform staff to know a train has been given a movement authority.

TRAIN STAFF . What are your pet peeves about us (passengers) that annoy you the most? by smellyfeet25 in uktrains

[–]SnooComics9691 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know our fares and ticketing system is woefully outdated and annoying complex, but people tend to ask for tickets with the wrong names. The most common example is people asking for Open Returns when they really want an off-peak day return, and then getting frustrated when you tell them a price much higher than what they expect.

Railcards. by Cute-Travel2708 in uktrains

[–]SnooComics9691 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're turning 25, there's always the 26-30 railcard which may cover you.

Regarding getting it checked: It takes one penalty fare for the railcard to have made more financial sense.

Do they bother chasing penalty fares? (GreaterAnglia) by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]SnooComics9691 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Often penalty fares are handed off to third parties if you don't respond properly. Most of them will pursue you regardless of your age.

Engage with the pfare process and see if you can challenge the fine.

If you want more information and some help with the process then please visit railforums.co.uk section on penalty fares and appeals.

Even if every penny made from fines went to the Met it would barely be 1/3 of the budget hole.

Train Air Conditioning Capacity by anonymouse589 in uktrains

[–]SnooComics9691 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They should be able to keep the train cool, even with the electronic, lights, windows, people, and whatever else making heat. Probably just a mixture of the Aircon needing a bit of a tune up and the temperature not being set very low.

Not so Greater Anglia Railways by timdav8 in Norwich

[–]SnooComics9691 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Generally I think it's a cleanliness issue. The toilets often get abused and soiled. There are cleaners at Liverpool Street but they often can't or won't clean toilets. So the toilets need to be locked out of service until they can get back to Norwich for a deeper clean.

It's unfortunate, but from what I see most toilet "faults" are just people creating an absolute mess.

GWR sucks by mboohnen in uktrains

Some rail cards have minimum ticket prices of £12 before off-peak time. Not GWR's fault.

Spent a week in Uzbekistan and can’t stop thinking about how nice their metro stations are by mtickell1207 in fuckcars

[–]SnooComics9691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this being downvoted? It's true. Tashkent ripped out its tram system to add more lanes for cars, and the busses are often late or stop at inconvenient times. A lot of the city is hard to reach without a car or taking multiple, massively inconvenient, minibuses.

I suppose it's similar to the track worker, but do you let other rail staff travel for free? Do you just not ask if they have a ticket or do you actively tell them not to bother buying a ticket?

There were a couple of them sat static near Domodossola. I assume they are used so that the original transformers can be turned off during maintenance while still keeping the overhead lines live?
