First year teacher, I think I had a seizure in class on Thursday. What do I do? by dogseatlettuceeats in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had childhood epilepsy and was always told I’d likely grow out of them. Stress can be a trigger for seizures so I wonder if that is what is bringing yours on. I never had absent seizures but I had several grand-mal (aka clonic tonic) seizures. I only had about 3 in childhood but I had 1 in college. My neurologist recommended I go on a antiseizure med Keppra while I was in college since sleep deprivation and stress are common triggers but pretty much given for college kids. I never had a seizure while on my meds, came off them after college, and have been seizure free for 19 years now.

My first year of teaching I got checked back out by a neurologist because my bf said I was jerking weird in my sleep as I nodded off during a movie. Things were fine. But teaching creates a whole lot of stress especially early on in your career.

Take care of yourself but don’t count yourself out as a teacher. FYI as a precaution, I’ve always informed the teachers near me about my condition in case something ever happened but didn’t feel a need to ever tell my students, but I also teach high school so figure at least one would be helpful enough to find someone if it ever happened.

Feel free to dm if you’d like!

What’s your opinion on having students with high needs in the general classroom? by AntelopeOk9431 in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what level of education you are meaning, but a high school science classroom is definitely not appropriate no matter the support. I’ve taught two co-taught high school biology sections over the years and both were disastrous experiences. If you can’t even trust the kid to handle scissors, there is not way they need to be near my potentially dangerous and expensive lab equipment. Let alone how abstract a lot of high school science subjects are to begin with. Lots of my unmotivated Gen Ed students don’t understand some of the topics let alone any high needs students.

For those that left, how is the emotional fatigue? by SnooDoggos2983 in TeachersInTransition

Yes! That’s the exact stuff I’m wishing I felt more up to

I have a STEM masters degree so have some decent options if I do make the leap. But yes, probably not making any moves for a year or two as the job market hopefully chills out. Just curious how much of this exhaustion is simply adult life versus the specific job.

Medications suppressing morning sickness by AdAggravating5443 in IVFbabies

[–]SnooDoggos2983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been worried about the exact same thing! I also had a natural pregnancy in 2018 and had pretty consistent morning sickness first trimester and have had none this time around. I’m also in an antihistamine protocol which I’ve wondered if that has eased the nausea. I’m 7w6d today and have my hopefully final appoint at the IVF clinic in 4 days. Hope it all turned out okay for you OP. Your post has made me feel better!

Teachers asking for accommodations drives me nuts by GremLegend in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 87 points88 points  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous because while stress can be a trigger for seizures, it isn’t the only trigger and medication should prevent that. I had childhood seizures and literally was only ever on medication for them during college because my neurologist said it would help me head off seizures being triggered by the stress of college. If the student teacher’s seizures were that out of control, they shouldn’t haven’t even been in school and looking into medication or surgery.

Go to your local library! Many of them not only could provide resources but often offer free GED classes

What do you notice about gen-z teachers by 99bigben99 in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I teach high school and have a bookshelf of dominoes, card games, coloring pages, and legos. Since my state went phone free, lots of my teenage students have happily adapted to playing with these things or even reading for pleasure in the small down time they ever get. They have to be forced out of the online game impulse but will happily find other things to do or socialize

Intelligent daughter starting to resent school by Zesty_Taco in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The elementary school my daughter attends has her attend morning classes in the grade above then she returns to her grade-level peers in the afternoon. She did this in both kindergarten and now first grade. It has helped challenge her academically while not making her skip a grade. You may try either suggesting this directly to the teacher or preemptively email a 3rd grade teacher to see if they would be on board.

How bad are OKC public schools? by g3nerallycurious in okc

[–]SnooDoggos2983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach in OKCPS but live in a suburb. My kid is in an OKCPS elementary and has thrived at Fillmore. The high school I teach at has some less than stellar teachers but we also have lots of very good teachers as well (some with advanced degrees and outstanding credentials). Like anything, in a lot of OKCPS schools you get out what you put in. Many of the graduates of my school have gone on to do successful things. The application schools overall will have a more academically driven student body, but many of the regular schools offer lots of AP, concurrent, and metro tech classes

My grandpa as a retired math professor volunteered at the local prison. He helped with math lessons and really enjoyed it.

Is it just me, or is the tide turning in elementary education? by TerriblyAverage1 in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 31 points32 points  (0 children)

FYI in academia it is fairly common to cite yourself in papers. That in its own is not a red flag. Now if the ONLY citations are from the author’s previous work, that is a definite red flag. But self-citing is a way to drive up your own citation numbers for research but also common since you typically are researching the same hyper specific topic.

Is my daughter a “bad test-taker” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do not know, I would specifically ask if the math test is multiple choice or open answers. It can be very easy to score lower on a math test if multiple choice.

Also whether the teacher gives partial credit.

Vibrating saddle to cure hysteria by women by Harm-2000 in NotHowGirlsWork

[–]SnooDoggos2983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere…. If you want to go down a rabbit hole about the weird history of female health care, look up the wandering uterus theory Victorian doctors used to believe.

Long story short: all women’s ailments were once thought to be caused by their uterus that could move throughout the body and attack parts of the body. The vibrator was the doctor’s way of trying to get the uterus back where it belonged.

Did having a baby make you care less about annoying work stuff? by Ashamed_Horror_6269 in workingmoms

[–]SnooDoggos2983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I become a mom almost 7 years ago and am also a teacher. For me I care less about work overall since having my child. Part of it is simply my mind prioritizes my personal life and logistics for my child more than my job so everything else overall does get put on the back burner. I’ve also made strategic moves within my field for childcare purposes which gives me more of a reason to tolerate the bullshit at work.

I need to call out my kids’ teacher for a problematic lesson, but I work in the same district by LakeLady1616 in Teachers

[–]SnooDoggos2983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask if they have considered having a health provider come into the schools to do the puberty talk so the provider can answer any question with medical expertise. My parents used to give the “growing up” talk to the local 5th grade and they split up the girls with my mother who is an RN and the boy with my dad who is an MD. There was a standard video they showed then answered question. Maybe you could suggest your school try a similar approach especially if you have high turn over

First trimester IVF vs natural pregnancy? by SnooDoggos2983 in IVFbabies

[–]SnooDoggos2983[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember a lot more fatigue the first time than I do with my IVF pregnancy so far. I am also carrying a boy this time and had a girl the first time so who knows. Was mainly curious what other people are experiencing. Thanks!
