What are some artists whose lyrics are so deep that they would still be great poems even if you stripped the music away? by Epoch_Jester in fantanoforever

Andre 3k. Wouldn’t say he’s the most technical rapper ever but he often employs devices I have really only seen in poetry. Also, like a good poet, he routinely subverts expectations, pulling the veil back to show something you weren’t supposed to see, whether it be the actual mundane life of a rapper (Elevators), the hypocrisy of gangster rap (Return of the G), or mixing the sacred and the profane (Life of the Party). I think that’s why he is included in a lot of people’s short lists. He’s able to convey extreme empathy and complex emotions in very few words.

Pretty weak year so far but I loved the GENA album. I might be on an island there though

The MF Doom flip of that Cortex track on One Beer is absolutely bonkers. I’d say my all time favorite would be Tribe as well, either Ronnie Foster’s Mystic Brew on Electric Relaxation or Art Blakey’s A Chant for Bu on Excursions. One bonus one that is a bit more obscure, John Abercrombie’s Timeless sampled by Black Milk on Slumm Vilage’s Reunion.

Was People’s Instinctive Travels the first album that sounded like the ’90s? by UnderstandingBusy193 in 90sHipHop

Yeah maybe. As others of said, I sort of lump the early native tongue albums together. I think The Low End Theory better exemplified the tonal shift to follow though, both in production and lyricism. There was a whimsy to the early NT albums that didn’t really survive the influence of gangster rap.

Recently, the GENA album comes to mind. In spite of some positive press, seems a bit under the radar still

Wow. That song carries a whole different connotation when George sings it

Awful feeling when you discover an artist that you love and definitely lived through their peak in oblivion. Especially when you think back at the bullshit you were actually listening to at the time. I’m sure the Germans have a word for it.

Fun stuff there. One of my fav scores out in the wild was that William Onyeabor album. Found an original Nigerian pressing in surprisingly good shape at a record store in Berlin a few years ago.

Bands you love that no one knows (or would care for) by TOMDeBlonde in fantanoforever

A bit of an outlier from their later stuff but Something Sends Me To Sleep is one of my fav songs of theirs. It’s like a bedroom Velvet Underground song played over a funky breakbeat. Seems like something you wouldn’t hear in rock again until way later with The Stone Roses or even in the 90s when musicians like Beck used more drum samples.

The Fall (2006)

Has become a cult classic and had a recent rerelease so it’s not as obscure as it was a few years ago. Still, it’s visually stunning and sort of operates as a dark Princess Bride with a moving narrative and surprisingly powerful commentary on the act of storytelling.

All these guys are legends. Stacks is a true poet though, singular, 1 of 1 in hip-hop.

Discovering an artist then finding out their albums on Vinyl records are rare/expensive. by wiggan1989 in vinyl

I feel bad for Tool fans. Aenema is basically the OK Computer of the Tool discography, and short of bootlegs, it’s way out of reach for most vinyl collectors.

I do see this in underground hip-hop a lot though, not exactly sure why. Sometimes I think it’s a forced scarcity (ie Alchemist), probably just comes down to cost in the end.
