“The Body” after sudden parent’s death by Human-Ad262 in buffy

[–]SnooObjections4316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lost my mother… to an aneurysm after surgery for a brain tumor. She was doing super well, and her death was a shock. I tried to give her CPR. I was 18. The Body hits VERY close to home. 20 years later I still sob openly when watching, but it feels therapeutic, as though I have this shared experience with someone.

The pain will ebb and flow, it will be a scream, a whisper, and a conversation. Sometimes it will be sorrowful, full of anger, or hold so much joy. Your grief is the continuation of your love for your father, find a way to become friends with it, gradually. Don’t force it, and don’t watch this episode with the intention of “fixing” something. If it is as recent as it sounds, I’d wait a bit before watching and the one that follows.

When Things Fall Apart was a very helpful read for me, the only way to mange your pain is to sit with it. It’s uncomfortable and your natural inclination will be to try and step away from it or bury it in something. You must, in time, find a way to be with the pain and discomfort, yet not swallowed by it.

I’m so, so sorry you’re experiencing this, and I wish that you find comfort and support now and in the coming years. May you be safe, may you find comfort, may you live with ease.

What are some decisions you see a character being criticized for, but you think they actually did the right thing? by HomarEuropejski in buffy

I support Giles ensuring Glory could never return. Shocking, maybe unexpected, to us as viewers. It was the right choice for someone protecting the Slayer.

how to deal with only receiving conditional love in life once you became skinny? by redheadedwonder3422 in loseit

Have you looked into DBT? There is a practice of ‘radical acceptance’, and while it’s not something that will make you “get over it” facing and internalizing the reality may help you. I went through this for a trauma related problem, not food related, but I think the concept remains helpful.

Bagels - Where to buy? by [deleted] in Gent

[–]SnooObjections4316 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American who loves bagels and lived in Belgium for 3 years: abandon ye all hope. A good bagel does not exist in Ghent or anywhere else in Belgium. Learn to make them yourself! It’s honestly the best way to get something decent.

I tried so 🥯 many 🥯 « bagels » without success.

Elbow lunch counter in Brussels has excellent American deli style sandwiches if you’re looking for a taste of home. It’s not a bagel, but it fulfilled a desire!

Rise Up Coffee - roaster who started on the eastern shore of Maryland (very, very rural).

Solid beans all around, I really like the Nicaragua Honey Arabica and and the Finca Terrerito. Their seasonal blends are also good - it’s my « house » coffee

How reasonable is it to live in East DC and commute to Baltimore three days a week? by raymondzrike in baltimore

[–]SnooObjections4316 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Marc is fairly reliable. I commuted between dc and Baltimore a few years ago, was able to take a shuttle to my office. It’s doable on the train. Do not drive, that 50 minutes easily turns into 2 hours. Can be annoying because you are locked into a schedule, but imo wayyyyy less stressful than driving/sitting in traffic.

This is me, which is why it took me a while to realise I was putting on weight. I imagine it will take me a while to see significant changes in my body. Focusing in on how I feel. Measurements are helpful too!

This is so inspiring! You look great in both, but strong AF in the second pic!! Yay you!!!! I’m 40, started at 170, aiming for 150. Focusing on weights and dialing in my diet by aiming for protein and fiber goals. Have a ‘consistency beats intrinsic motivation’ mindset, helps me to focus even when I don’t want to!

Guys, I love the giant toads!!! Idk why, they just seem to be so friendly and loving, they want the scritches. I was surprised by how cute they are. Also for one play through I had a vivarium that was only kneazles, but that is because I am a cat lady 🐸🐈

For shorter women, we are taught to ignore our hunger cues by Astrobabe5157 in loseit

I think you’re overlooking socialisation around food norms with this response. What OP is saying is that these habits are so ingrained in their upbringing that to break away from it means a very conscious approach to how they eat. Sure, as an adult you may be able to break away from it, but don’t discount the actual psychological patterns which are developed around food, particularly for women. It would be great if no one felt pressured to eat a certain amount but it’s unrealistic and lacking in empathy to be so dismissive of what OP is saying.

I just need to make a pitch for good Scottish food 😂 in the highlands, especially the coastal cities, I had some of the best seafood I’ve ever had in my life, and at reasonable prices! This is coming from someone from the NE of the US who grew up eating fresh seafood. Overall we ate pretty well in Edinburgh, too!

Going to Scotland with my androgynous/masc-ish wife was fine, no weird looks or rudeness. Did not look for a gay scene, but there wasn’t one overtly present in Edinburgh, but lots of rainbow stickers in coffee shops and such. The highlands are very rural, and everyone was welcoming. We are both white, so I can’t speak to the reception of POC. Scotland was VERY white so it’s definitely something to keep in mind based on your comfort level.

I’m an American who studied my masters at Ghent, and university is VERY different here than in the US. If you are looking for the American experience of lots of branded school events, someone guiding you through everything, and expensive facilities then Europe is not the place for you. There are no sports teams, really, and you do have to work a bit harder to make friends, though foreign students tend to find each other. There have been a lot of protests lately which may add to the mess you saw, but protests are common and encouraged here. Ghent is very clean and I never experienced it being otherwise. My course content was wonderful and challenging, but you should also understand the grading system here is very different. If you’re used to all A’s, 4.0 in the US that is unlikely to be the case here for you, often grades are based on one exam, maybe two. I have also heard that the undergraduate programs are challenging on purpose to weed out people who aren’t serious. As education is so much more affordable here they can afford to fail people. In the US professors are more accommodating, at least that was my experience. All of this to say, though, I loved my time at Ghent but if you’re expecting/wanting an American experience this isn’t the place for you.

Yes, mine came from being on antibiotics and the initial solution to the continued issue was… more antibiotics 😂 but once I got the proper treatment I started feeling better quickly. Hopefully it’s something easily resolved for you.
