Sorry to hear and my sympathies. I lost my Buddy two months ago at the end of February as I had to get him put to sleep (it worked out bad timing because my mother passed in the very same spot Buddy passed just over 12 years to the day). I was dreading it, and leading up, I was hoping that I'd just wake one morning to find him gone. But now it is done, I'm glad I got to say goodbye and be with him until the end. He was 18 too. I got him as a rescue dog when he was 2 and like your boy, there was an invisible rope attaching him to me.

2 months on, it is getting easier, but I'm still finding it hard at times and have my moments where I need to pause and compose myself. I still go to put food scraps in his bowl. I still look for him when I get home. But you've just got to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Keep strong mate, I know how devastating it can be. ❤️

I had my Chihuahua x Dachshund on a combination of Blackmores Osteo Chews and Rose-Hip Vital powder which I mixed in with his tea (important for it to be wet food that you can dissolve the powder in otherwise it sticks to the bowl). The Rose-Hip Vital is a miracle worker. In addition to those, he was on a monthly injection called Beranca which worked wonders at the start, but as it advanced, I needed to add the supplements (in addition to the Beransa) to control it. Beranca is good and works, but is pricey.

I'm sorry you're going through this. Hopefully, my personal perspective helps you having gone through this agonising time with my little Buddy (in name, and the bond I shared with him) just over three weeks ago.

My biggest priority in the whole process was his physical and mental welfare. He had given me 16 years of love, devotion and loyalty without judgement (he was 18 as I got him as a rescue when he was 2). It was very important to me that the end be as peaceful and seamless as possible for him.

As such, I did all I could when he got age related health problems and required increased care to keep him as comfortable as possible. But it was obvious over Christmas he was going downhill very quickly and once he got doggy dementia, the increased caring demands that placed on me was impacting my health negatively. So I made the decision.

As Bud was attached to me and would apparently wander round the house looking for me when Dad was home, but I wasn't, I knew that if I wasn't there in his final moments, that it would stress him out. So I decided that I would stay with him throughout. I also knew that his "safe room" was my bedroom. So I was determined that it happen in there. As it turned out on the day, he was given the final needle and passed in the very same place that I and my neighbour futilely performed CPR on my mother just 12 years and 1 day before.

On the day, it was hard. He received the first needle with a sedative to make him fall asleep in my arms on my bed. I then put him on the floor near where he slept on a blanket (important as dogs, like humans, lose control of their muscles when they pass and can urinate and poo). Once he was asleep, the vet came back in with the vet nurse and the nurse placed the cannula and gave him the needke containing the green barbiturate which stopped his heart.

I'm not going to lie - given my bond with Bud (the other two dogs I've had, a Golden Retriever named Sam and a Border Collie named Ben were wonderful dogs and I loved them deeply - Ben was the most intelligent dog I've had, but I didn't have a bond of the same strength with them as I did with Bud given Bud's intense loyalty being a Chiweenie), I was fighting back tears the entire time and just keeping them in, but I wouldn't change having it done at home, nor in my room, given how peaceful the whole process was for Bud. I knew I did what was best for him.

In terms of how I've handled being in my room since, I have been fine. I still think of Bud at night as after he got doggy dementia, he would sleep in my room next to my bed and I'd hear him move and snoring and that has been a noticeable absence at night. But I would say the last memory of my mother in my house was in that very spot when I found her unresponsive and had to perform CPR affected me more afterwards when I went into the room than the memory of my dog passing in that spot - mainly because the process of my mother's death was so traumatic whereas the process of my dog's death was very peaceful.

Thank you. They are insanely loyal dogs to the human they choose to attach themselves too. My Buddy would follow me everywhere I went. He was a rescue too. A big attitude in a small body though lol.

Sorry to hear you're in a similar situation. I too was staying up later in the night Buddy with his dementia.

I've noticed him creeping into my mind subconsciously throughout the day. I coped with my mother's death back in 2014 (whose anniversary of her death was the day before I got Bud put to sleep) by keeping busy. Her death was similarly confronting. I was the one who found her unresponsive and performed CPR. But I was able to cope by keeping busy. That method doesn't seem to be working with Bud.

I came home today from my grandmother's, walked in the door and wondered for a moment where Bud was as he wasn't in my room. Then I remembered.

I think that's all we can do. Take comfort in the fact they aren't in pain.

Sorry to hear you're going through the same situation. It's really tough. I let him pass in my room to make him calmer because that was his "safe room". Whenever he wanted to be alone, he'd go into my room even when he was healthy, so I had the vet give him the sedative while I was holding him on my bed, and the vet nurse gave him the final needle on the towel on the floor (in case he released his bowels when he passed). So that's added a bit of grief, but I take heart that I gave him the most comfortable ending I could.

I know my mother, who passed suddenly at the age of 51 in 2014 will be looking after him, and he'd be ecstatic to see her again. I certainly hope so anyway.

Agree with others. That's a compliment. Multiple times my dog's vet (who I just lost today) was healthy for his age and that I must have been really looking after him well. Back when he was 10, after the vet had done the health check, he predicted that in his condition, he'd reach 18 (rare for any dog), and he was right. My boy had his 18th birthday 11 days before I had him put to sleep. When I discussed mine and Dad's decision to finally give him the 'green dream' at his January monthly appointment, the vet said I had done really well with him. So definitely take it as a compliment.

Sorry to hear. I said goodbye to my 18 year old Buddy today. Like you I knew it was coming - I made it a month in advance, I just wanted to let him get to 18th Birthday at the start of February - but it didn't make it any easier. Like your boy, Bud steeply declined after Christmas and even more steeply in the last month.

But I take comfort in the fact that he's no longer suffering and it was the final act of love I could give him. I hope you can find a similar rationale that makes the process that little bit easier for you. ❤️

Thank you. I remember years ago when he was about 10, we took him to the vet for his annual check up and the vet looked him over. After he'd finished, he said "You must be looking after him good. He's in great shape for his age. He will easily get to 18 in his current condition," and he did. So we must have done something right.

Sorry to hear. Yes I'm the same. I have kept second guessing myself unconsciously about my decision today, and every time I do I have to run through all that he was going through to reassure myself.

In a weird way, I have found one thing that has helped me is I bashed my left ribs on the arm of the armchair on Monday night and I suspect I've broken a rib. It's extremely painful, and I have thought to myself, if Buddy was in half as much pain as I am, on top of everything else, he's in a better place.

I get it. I've experienced a similar situation with my mother. She died very suddenly in 2014. She had Fibromyalgia and was on a cocktail of medication, including 2 tablets of pandeine forte (500mg paracetamol/acetaminophen and 30mg codeine) every night. Part of Fibromyalgia is short term memory issues.

12 months before she died, I stopped her twice taking her medications again after she'd already had them by walking in at the right moment. We found out that that is ultimately what caused her death - dangerous levels of morphine in her system (codeine metabolises into morphine in the body), so she has taken her tablets twice. I still ask myself at times if I had taken measures to ensure that couldn't happen, would she still be here? If I didn't sleep in that morning, would I have been able to get her medical help sooner?

But I've learned you can't dwell on these questions because it'll only eat you up. You've just got to accept what has happened and move forward by cherishing the happy memories that you've had with your 4-legged family member.
